Well I have never done this but I might as well start one. I have officially started working on putting some beef under the Jeep.

To start off I am going with 1-ton axles under this thing. The front is a D60HD low pinion. Found out last night that it has 35 spline inners and 30 spline outers.

Here it is all cleaned up and primed with the rotors and spindles removed.

The Jury is still out on the rear axle as too what it is. Conflicting reports said it was a Dana 80, but after calling Autozone to check on some inner bearings, it seems to be either a D60 or D61. I will be taking the ring gear out and trying to find something on it to tell me. Anyone know what size the Ring is in a D61. I know the D60 is 9.75.

Anyway this thing has HUGE axle tubes and 30 spline shafts and what seems to be an LSD or Gov Loc. Kinda weird to me after seeing the shafts in the front.

Next up may be the replacement of the spindles themselves. The drivers side looks like a bearing seized up on it and really did a number. Passenger side looks like someone beat on it with a hammer.

Of course it will get all new joints, seals, bearings, rotors, calipers, and brakes. I will be changing the rear over to disc. Anybody got some junk Caddy rear calipers with the park brake built in????

More to come...

Hey Bill, did you know your front axle is upside down? You going for that lo-steer set-up?

I file will take care of hammer marks. As for a new spindle PM 1-tonmudder. He recently got some Dana 50 hubs which should use the same spindles. Also you could take it to a machine shop and have it welded up and turned back down. Last one I had done was about $40.

I've found the best way to ID an axle is to google search the numbers on the ring gear.

Here's what I got for a rear disc conversion.

If the shafts in the rear are 30-spline it's pretty much gotta be a 60 or 61. A 70 had 35-spline shafts, and 80's had like 37 or 40 spline shafts.

Seriously anytime you need a hand give me a call. You've got my number.

Call Spencer..I know he had an issue with a D61 that was mistaken for a D61.

Anyway...thats going to be one mean ride

Their should be a BOM# (bill of materials) on the axle tube that will tell you exactly what the axle is and what it came from.

Right here is the link.

Thanks for all the nice comments guys and the offers to help. You make me feel special....:D

Brian - I know you have heard of draggin frame? Well I am going to drag, drag link....;)

Shawn - thanks for the link on the brake setup. That doesn't look too bad. Also thanks for the reminder on Googling the # off the ring gear.

Ben - The only D70 that I have found to come with 35 spline shafts is the D70HD. The 70, 70U and one other only have 30 splines in them if I read Dana's site right.

I have found PART of the BOM on the axle tube. and tried looking it up on Dana with no luck. I did pull the carrier last night since I will need to clean the inside of the case and tubes out. Reason being that I found an entire pinion gear tooth laying in the case. Before someone junked the truck it came from, the must have broke the pinion because the one in it is pretty much new. I measured the gear and it is 9.75" so I know it isn't a 70.

I have this huge long # on the axle tubes on the rear also. Starts out like ML and is long as your arm. But they are not the same # on each side. I am guessing some kind of part #.

I have a D70 non HD with 35 spline shafts. HD just gets bigger carrier bearings. It all depends on the years. Most newer D70's are in Dodge trucks and have 32 spline shafts.

You are right Shawn. I looked on Dana again and the 70HD had 35's and the 70 came with both. The 70 U had 32's or something like that. It don't matter either way now.

I FOUND OUT WHAT IT WAS. Shawn's advice on getting the numbers off the ring gear worked.

Spencer told me to look on the underside of the stump for a 61. It was not on there. BUT, I finally figured out the BOM #. 605420-3, it is a D60 with Trac-Loc from a 90-91.5 E250. I still can't figure what the front came from exactly but with the detail from the rear the date on the front tube of 11-29-90 seems to be a good indicator that these are from a 91 model if they came from the same vehicle.

I also finally got the spindle off the caliper mount. Took a little of the "fire" wrench and some hard hits but it dropped out.

Any suggestions on the best way to clean the inside of the housings out? I am thinging a little gas/diesel, a brush, and them the pressure washer to blow it all out. Then coat the thing with some diesel or diff fluid. I still have to get all my bearings, races, and seals to put back in it.

That will work well to clean it out. I bet your axles are from a 90 or 91 4wd van. I have a large washer welded to the end of a 4 foot piece of rod so I can scrape out the tubes. I use it every time I pull the axle apart.

He will miss to many rides this summer if he starts now :(

I'm still waiting on my PSC rocker guards.. Been almost 6 weeks now.

I tried to cancel the order about 3 weeks ago and just build my own, but I was told they are in powder coat and would be shipping in the next few days. Arg..

Yeah the date is because of the batteries I had just replaced and didn't want to fool with changing.

I believe they are located just outside Denver in Sheridan. Well that is what my shipping label says anyway.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Maybe one day, I will break out the torch and get to work on BIGGER things.

That sounds cool. I want to try!

You know I can hook you up with some 38" tires. The cool thing is they measure the same as a 40" swamper and will fit on stock 7" wide 8 lug rims.
