Am I right in assuming that if I buy a gooseneck in another state(probably VA) that I will not have to pay sales tax on it,or is that just wishful thinking.

I believe you would, either here or there, if it's titled and/or tagged. If you acquire it privately and don't execute any Tenn paperwork (no title or tag), it (the sale) would technically never have happened. If it is new and thru a dealer, they would collect tax, I'm sure.

I'd call the courthouse and ask, so that you'd get the real skinny, and not just my guesswork.

You will pay sales tax on it when you register it in TN.

Going by the price of a new one ($5500) I will probably wind up buying a used one. Will I have to tag it?? Im already tagging four.

TN does not require a tag. If you don't get a tag then there is no way for TN to collect sales tax on it.

With that said I recently paid $300 for tax and a permanent tag on my gooseneck.

Will you run into any problems pulling out of state if your trailer is not tagged? The reason I ask is because I'm gonna have to be looking for one before too long.

Wishfull thinking...

RIght before I moved to TN I purchased my car trailer in VA where I was living, I left the temp 30 day tags on it and after selling the house and moving here, I had to pay the tax to get my permenant tags... AND still payed VA sales tax too...

Welcome to TN...

Pulling into another state you will want tags. The reply of " my state doesn't require tags" usally get the reply from the officer that "your not in your state." It just keeps down hassles IMO. Also, certain lengths don't require tags - certain width and lengths do require tags. Hope this length helps for Tennesse requirements.

It is just like buying a car. If you paid sales tax in VA then you bring your paperwork to TN and they will not charge you tax since sales tax had been paid in the state it was purchased in. Imagine you buy a car in Florida and pay taxes there. Then you move here a year later. They will not make you pay taxes again. I have been through this several times buying cars. Also, I have bought a car in VA and not paid any tax on it there. Paid the taxes here when I went to register it.
