How much is a life worth? Let's say there was something that could be done to save 2 lifes per year across the US, but it would cost $500 for every business in the country and then $150 per year after that. Would it be worth it? (City of Elizabethton back flow prevention)
What if you could save two lifes per year by lowering speed limit from 70mph to 55mph? Would it be worth it? (I26 in sullivan county)
Why stop there? Lower it from 55mph to 40mph on all roads and save two more lifes per year?
Lower it to 10mph and you would eliminate almost all auto wrecks.
So how much is a life worth?

One could say that "Life's a Dance" - risk surrounds human life as we know it. Equating cash/money would be a never ending discussion. In real dollars, technically, flesh is almost of no value - minerals, gold teeth, etc. Maybe a few dollars. A true believer knows that "real life" is eternal with our Father.
Now, ask me how much of my personal "greenback dollar" wealth that I would give up to save Bev's human life, and my answer would be - every last cent. That is because of faith. I am convinced that God will provide for my true needs, and that I have a place with Him forever, even if I didn't have any cash.

I'm not sure but I'll make somebody a good deal on a 22 year old
All kidding aside, I know that those God chooses to save are very valuable...look what a Price he paid for us.
His perfect Son...
Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

My first job right out of high school was as a cashier, and I worked that job for years, and I am ironically a cashier again as a part-time job.
Every store I have ever worked at has always said, if someone holds a gun to you and demands all the money in the drawer/safe/whatever... give it to them. Every store says that the amount of money a person steals is not worth losing a life over. With that being said... think about how much money a store can bring in...

You all are missing the point.
Let's say every US citizen had to pay $100 per year as a safety tax. They promised it would save 3 lifes per year by increased safty though better safetly labels on hazardous items. Would that be ok with you? Would you be happy to pay it? How about if that tax was $500 and it was due the last week of December?
The US population is 298,444,215 times $100 per person would be almost 30 billion dollars. So is a life worth 10 billion each?
Yes, I'd give my life for a loved one, but I wouldn't give it for a stranger.

Well, I grew up down here in the big city, and at the first of every month I get to see the line of people standing outside of the government buildings waiting for a welfare check... a check that they only get because we americans are paying taxes. I would say that I would rather have my money go towards saving lives than the lazy people collecting welfare (granted I know there are some the sincerely need it, I am not complaining about them)....
Is that what you were trying to ask? Whether or not we'd agree to pay more money in our taxes if it were to go towards "saving lives".
I think that isn't an easy thing for the government to guarantee the money towards. And if I were to pay money towards saving lives, I'd put my money into a charity.
But you can also help save lives by giving blood... or just donating your time and energy. Being a good influence in a child's life can help save that child from a horrible life or even from early death....

I guess I'm just annoyed by some of the things the gov't is doing to save lives but at an extremely high cost. It just got me thinking.

Keep in mind that the high costs are also from the insurance companies.
Doctors and hospitals and all will charge higher prices to the insurance companies than they would charge you directly.
It all comes down to greed.

In my first post you will see I'm complaining about a backflow valve. The city of Elizabethton requires them in all commercial buildings. It will be require in all cities evertually. This valve cost about $500 to get installed and then $150 per year to be inspected. The theory is that if you have poison in a bucket and fill it with a water hose and the tip is submerged and there is a water outage the poison water can flow back into the pipes and kill someone.
So if every business had to shell out $150 per year how many millions is that to save the life of one or two people?

It seems that society is trying to idiot proof the whole world, in doing so eventually there will only be idiots because no one ever learns from their mistakes

And, back to your point, Shawn - The American society has evolved this way because we, as a society, are too wealthy (cash) for our own good. We spend because we can. Americans (in general, guys, not picking on any individual, but our society compared to others) think that by just throwing more cash at a problem we'll fix it. Be it education, pollution, crime, drugs, whatever - if, as individuals, folks took more responsibility, became involved, took a little time to be more aware and kind. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the commodity of choice was love & compassion, and cash was "worthless". Think about "buying" things with love, and not greenbacks.
1 Timothy 6:10
King James Version (KJV)
10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

If your going to be dumb you have to be tough.
If you cannot use the guifts that God gave you to slow down in the rain, or don't eat too much candy, or anything like that then you have made a mistake. No, I don't think that we should have to do this, but I think that we should use common cents (I know). That is not to common.

I agree. People can't even disciplin their children any more with out fear they are going to be thrown into prison for child abuse. Then the child grows up without respect or fear of consequence and then we have more criminals then we did before. ahhhhh :angryfire:
