Jeep auto tranny problem

I have a Jeep Grand that has a tranny problem. It is an automatic. When driving it will not automatically shift back to first. When you slow down and stop at a light it will try to pull out in 2nd gear, and then shift to 1st. If you do it with the shifter it does it fine. Anyone have any ideas? The valve body has been taken out and cleaned. Rob

Possibly detent cable adjustment issue, or internal shift solenoid. Which tranny is it?

How do I tell? it is a 96 V8 grand. I don't know jeeps.

It should have a 5.2L engine with the 44RE tranny.
