I just placed the order for a SAS kit for my truck. I decided not to go with the IFS for a while, and am going to do it right the first time. I am ordering a 4 inch Trailgear kit, and should be shipped today or tomorrow. That is when the fun begins. I guess I will have to get the tourches, and the grinder time on this one. I will also be putting on my sliders, and 5.29 gear in the rear. I will have to come up with some cas between now and then to get the front. Than is no problem, I have 2 5.29 Ifs setups to get rid of. I have been collecting parts. Where does everyone recomend for a front driveshaft? I will post pictures on the whole build. Thank You, Rob

I just got off the phone with insane04 in K town. I have the front ring and pinion on the way, and I am going on Long weekend, and will be chopping, and welding this week. I hope that it will be long enough to get everything done. If time allows I will be doing my sliders along with the SAS. If there is time I was thinking about doing th rear bumper as well. I am thinking about something like this. http://www.4x4grace.com/Coppermine/albums/userpics/10036/bumper.jpg
What do you think? Does anyone have anidea for a front bumper? Rob

There was alot done yesterday. The truck had not rear center section, and no front suspensuin. Today will be a partial traveling day, and I will be cutting the front down to the frame rails. It is going prety well. I had a couple of problems yesterday, but the worked out well. The torsion ballr bolts would not come all of the way out. I Will have to cut them when I get the torch out today. It is looking good. I will try to have some pictures today.

No pictures yet. We got alot of stuff done after church today. The front axle is trussed, and has armor on it as well. The holes for the front hangers are cut in the frame as well. The front hanger is tacked, and tomorrow we should have the axle hanging. I will not have the gears until Tues evening. I am going to try to do the steering tomorrow after we hang the housing. I have to clean it and paint it in the morning. It is coming along great. I will take the camera tomorrow so I can get some proof that it is going solid. That axle is stout with the truss kit. Rob

Want2Wheel
02-02-2007, 10:25 PM
They are the ones in the kit. I fixed the problem. I am an idiot. The bearings were not seated yet. I had to put some major torqe on the nut to seat them. The seals were cold because the shop is not heated all of the time.
The update is that I now have the hubs, and lockouts on. I am ready to hook up the brakes, and bleed them. I needed a bearing for my rear end that is taking a while to get here so I have to wait a while longer. It will be fun when it is done.

Man now I have to catch up

It is not a race. I have been blessed, and I am able to do this now. Have fun in the journey. I did not have 4x4 before now. That is the main reason that I am doing it.

I just got off of nights this morning, and I went over and got the front wheels on. The front end is done except for the fluid, and the brakes. I will be getting my rearend tomorrow morning. I will put it in tomorrow evening. I hope that I will be able to drive it tomorrow evening. I am going to have to build a front drive shaft for it so that will not be done yet. The IFS shaft will not allow it to flex enough so I will have to find some DS parts, and make one. I can smell it now. By the way that it is sitting I may have to raise the rear 1-2 inches to match. I hope that the front settles down a little so I don't have to. There will still be a little more shop time to do the sliders and rear bumper. I am still going to have to do something about the front as well.

Dude it is ALIVE. I just got home. The 5.29 gears with the 33 are not to bad if you want to drive off road only. Is is fun. I finished it, and took it up the road a little. This is after droping the Xfer xmember down 1/2 inch. I am still using the double cardan joing, and think that I need to get rid of that. The other option is to double my xfer, but not enough $$$$ now for that.

A cheap fix maybe turn your rear-end up alittle? Thats what i did on my yota i had!

^ What he said! You need to rotate the axle or use some shims to straighten your pinion angle.

HotRodYJ
04-27-2007, 10:50 AM
With a double Cardon joint at the t-case, the U-joint at the pinion should be 2-3 degrees below being in perfect alignment with the d-shaft. That will solve your droop problem at this joint. This is the rear axle right? Same applies with the front axle etc that castor angles have to play in there also so it's a much more difficult fix.

limegreenyota
04-27-2007, 11:01 AM
Front axles are real senstive to rotatin if your gonna street drive them. If you start leaning you ball joints to far forward they get alittle hairy to drive!!
Thats a nice lookin yota!!!

Gordon
04-27-2007, 11:21 AM
Yup, to all. Tried to give you a call, left message. Might drop the t/c a bit more. I dropped mine 5/8" plus rotated the rear pinion up 2*.

Bluegill
04-27-2007, 01:16 PM
Rob, IIRC that is your front shaft, right? Certainly can't rotate that or else it won't be driveable on the road. Another thought is to get a different yoke, one that the ears come out 1/2" further from the axle flange but still has the same thickness at the mounting bolts. This might help alleviate the bind your shaft is currently in.

Jeep07
04-27-2007, 01:36 PM
Correct Bluegill, it is the front shaft not the rear.

I put one of these on the X.

http://www.4xshaft.com/Super-Flex/SF131_135_141.jpg

It helped alot. I also ground down the yokes for extra flex and put degree shims on the axle.

Excerpt from their website

"The unique design of off-set trunnions sets the mating yokes further apart than a more conventional joint. This allows for 10 degrees more flexibility than would be otherwise obtainable. While 10 degrees may not sound like a lot, with a 30" drive shaft, this will allow more than 5" of additional droop at your axle prior to binding of the universal joint. Our testing shows that installing this universal joint into standard yokes, the drive shaft will flex to 40 degrees. With a little grind work on the yokes the drive shaft will flex to 45 degrees. "

I think the offset UJoint might help alot. It was around $80 shipped from 4xshaft.com

This problem is the pit fall of reverse shackles :(

Want2Wheel
04-27-2007, 02:08 PM
You are correct, it is the front, and I cannot turn it because of the steering. The other problem is that it is a Std. yota size. I will look and see if I can get an offset one. I really don't want to drop my x member down any more, but I may have to. Thank You

Want2Wheel
04-27-2007, 04:17 PM
Tom Woods said that I should look at my caster, and use a late model flange. He said that the other flange would allow for more clearance. I will post pictures tonight on the difference. I will also see what Trail-gear has to say on Monday. Thank You

Want2Wheel
05-24-2007, 12:17 PM
All that was mad better by putting 3deg. shims in the front. It did fix some steering stuff that I had not noticed before. It drives alot better. The next thing that I am going to be doing is adding a double transfer box to it. That is right, I am going to double. I got the trans that I had to find, and I have to get a doubler kit. I will be on my way soon. The other thing that I have to do is cut my DS down again, and make them longer. That is going to be fun trying to get enough metric pipe for the front. Thank you, and pictures will be posted when it starts. I need to sell my old trans and transfer case first.

I really don't think that I want to run bigger righ now. I have the right ammount of opening for the 35 to stuff. If I go bigger I will have to build a bed. I am not going to hack mine up unless I crunch it. I don't think that the budget will allow me to go lower yet. I also will be putting a quick lock in the front. I will be locked F&R, and doubled. I will wheel it until I sell the current setup.

he has 5.29 in his diffs, But I was talking about the t-case. ...while the tcases are in high range they should have a 1:1 ratio when one is in low range it should be what .......2:1 then with both in low it should be 4:1 then with the 5.29's it will be around 21:1 not including any gear from the transmission. thats pretty close to my samurai's with 24:1.

You'll love the extra gearing. To me the extra low gearing gives me a better since of control.

Yes it is an air tank with 2 fittings and a pressuer guage. The is a pop off so the pressuer is not too much. I think that is should hold alot of pressure. When I get it figured out I will have an onboard air comp to feed it. Now I will be working on the front and a little more flex. I got a set of chevy springs to put on the rear. This winter I will being a dual case as well.

Rob, I researched a bit more after your call, and no go on aftermarket bearings, at least through us. I also checked the web a bit, and seems there aren't sources in the aftermarket.

Maybe some of the Yota folks will be more familiar than me and chime in.

Indeed, God was watching when you weren't able to make Stony. Praise!

I'll start posting some progress first of the week. It's getting hydro assist, tube bed, 63" chevys in back, and some new blingstien shocks in the back.

Well, do to inclement weather and such, tonight was the first night I worked on Rob's truck. The plan was to get the hydro assist done and the bed removed. Bad news: A. I forgot my camera so I don't have any progress pics B. Neither of the goals were accomplished.

I got the hydro assist installed and was bleeding the air out... After several minutes of bleeding with no success I notice the puddle on the floor. It seems whoever Rob had drill and tap his box wasn't successful. Sooo... now i've gotta spend tomorrow evening, which would have been spent doing the spring swap, pulling the steering box back off and fixing the fitting that seems to either be cross threaded or simply not tapped deep enough (and extremely crooked if this is the case). My fault for not inspecting this stuff prior to installing I guess; but I assumed since it was sent to someone to have this done rather than a basement/garage job it was done correctly. Oh well... I'll snap a couple pics tomorrow night once the hydro assist is not only installed, but functioning

Thats no good :(

Hopefully the box is salvageable. I have a shortened tap up here if you need it to get all the way down into the channel with threads.

I'm just gonna grab a shortened one from work. Remember when I got you to grind your brand new tap when we did the Nissan? Lol. I probably have one in the toolbox at the house, but it's easier just to get one outta the pile here.

ended up finding all 4 of my 1/4" NPT taps @ the house which worked out well. Found the problem with the drill and tap job; the hole was simply tapped with a tap that had not been shortened(or shortened enough) and the fitting had been overtightened. When it was pulled down too much it rolled a thread and cracked the steering box. There was a hairline crack leaking that I could not get a good pic of; but when i started to pull the fitting out(which took a 2 ft 1/2" drive ratchet) you can see the affected area. I was able to simply remove the cracked section of the box(courtesey of a small die grinder) and tap the hole deeper with my cut down tap. After cutting the fitting down(removed half the threads) and reinstalling it everything worked beautifully. I also have the bed ready to remove and plan on gettin that done tomorrow evening. here's a couple pics i took tonight.

There have been several minor upgrades, or rebuilds since this last post. Here is just another upgrade that is about to happen. http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p259/want2wheel/callalentee%206-28-08/DSC_1272.jpg I tried to go up easyout at Callientee, and at the top my drive shaft hit the big rock. That ended my day. The winch works great though.

After looking at your Yota, it gives me a little more faith since im just starting out with my XJ! Its definitely a time consuming process! And im glad theres a few people down this way to help out!

Well I need to update this thing a little. I decided to go with a 7mge engine swap. This is the same engine that was in the supra. At the same time I am going to put my double transfer cases in. I found a donor car. It is an 89 Cressida. The 7mge is a 3.o inline 6 cyl. I tore the engine down and found that the last 2 rods had been starved of oil at one time. I will post pictures later. I dropped the crank off at the machine shop this morning. This build may take a little while because I am not going to brake the bank.

gonna install supra twin turbo's too right?

Lets get the ting in and running first. I am going to put a good head gasket on it so that I could put a power adder if I wanted.

Can/Do people maybe put a little tack weld or somthing on the arm? I guess that would hinder the ability to service the knuckle unless you grind the tack off?

Yes its fairly common for that to be done.

yeah that motor was running kinda rough when we pulled it in the garage, but 89 Cressida body is in great shape if anyone needs one, goes to the highest bidder, all proceides go to turbos...right Rob!!

I was just reading through this and realized I need to update it. It is about to grow up again. The plans have changed several times, and now are stuck with a Toyota 3.4 running dual cases. I am working on a new DD right now and then the truck will go into the shop again for a big change. I also have a set of Longs to put into the front when I go through it.

so is there any updates on your truck rob? I believe the last time i talked to you, you were getting ready to start the engine swap.

My shop has been full of other people's stuff. I have everything to do the swap, with a doubler. I also have a set of longfield axles for the front. I was thinking about using another axle housing and welding it up so it is stronger. The bigest thing that I have not been able to find is the time to work on it. I am in the middle of a basement remodel right now. We are redoing the bathroom down there. I just pulled the bathtub out and found that the drain is broken off in the floor. Oh well I guess I will learn how to chip concrete and replumb it. I like lemonade!!!!!
After the 66 mustang is done I will get mine in and take it apart and go from there.
