Guys,

Here's a link to my new trail rig. I'm going to have it shipped from Garden City, Kansas.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=200058907839&rd=1,1

It is pretty much already built the way I want it, but I'm certain that it will be TWEAKED to make it mine...

That looks like it will be a fun trail rig. It look prety canable to handle anything you want to do. Are you going to paint it green?

I thought you were going with something different :?

I have decided that, for now, it is better to buy something that is relatively inexpensive and pay-off some bills with the rest of the Unimog money. I know that it doesn't have portal axles, but for today, it's better to have a more NORMAL vehicle, and less stress. Kids are expensive...

As far as painting it goes, I will probably try to make it one color, but I have pretty much found that paint is just something that rubs-off when I go trail riding... I can say with some level of confidence that it will not be the same color green as the Unimog was. I really didn't care much for that color of green.

I think that the 108" wheelbase will be cool on some of the waterfalls and such...

Missing links are concidered a bad idea on heavier rigs like a Jeep or bigger. They seem to do okay on Zuk's and really light weight stuff, but any heavier and they can be dangerous. At least that;s the general concincous of most people. I have no experience, only what I have read of people who have tried them.

Thanks Guys. I believe that I am getting a very capable rig for a good price. I probably could have built a rig for the $8500 that I am paying for it, but it would take several months get it trail ready. It is costing me $750 to have it shipped here. Not cheap, but less than it would cost me to drive out and back. I factored the shipping charges in with my purchase price, and I still feel like it's a good deal. It'll probably take a couple of weeks to get it here from Kansas.

I've spent a lot of time on the phone with the guy that owns(ed) it, and the guy at Bent and Twisted, and they both swear to the quality of the rig. Bent and Twisted has a really good name in the business, and is putting their name on the rig. In about five minutes the owner quoted over $12,000 in new parts right off of the top of his head. That didn't include any installation charges or the cost of the Jeep or any of the miscellaneous parts bought for the build...

It will be here by Wednesday, January 10th. They had a pretty bad ice storm out west and it has delayed everything. Garden City, Kansas was without power for about four days. This is more trouble than having the 'Mog shipped from Germany... :(

 Time feel like its standing still?

It really does with the Jeep. When I had the Mog shipped from Germany, everything went as smooth as silk. The trucking company that I have been dealing with now is not very good. I'll give them a chance to square things up before I post their name all over the internet as being unscrupulous and unreliable.....

I hope to get the Jeep next week, but it doesn't look too promising. I may have to start over with another shipper. My seller is being patient, so it has not really hurt me yet.

Rtaylor
01-17-2007, 09:29 AM
I think that I got a pretty good deal. The body is three or four different colors, but has no rust. The Jeep is pretty well built:

Rebuilt AMC 360 engine (350HP)
Howell Fuel Injection System
Jacobs Electronic Ignition System
NV4500 transmission
Atlas 4.3 transfer case
Dana 44 with ARB and 4.56 gears
ARB air compressor
Dana 60 with Detroit Locker and 4.56 Gears
15 - 39.5 X 15 TSL Swampers
Red Neck ram assist steering
Custom roll cage
Warn 9.5 winch
Trail Ready beadlock wheels
Warn Premium locking hubs
Custom stainless steel fuel cell
Custom axle shafts
Custom drive shafts
Sony Xplode stereo w/ CD player

I unloaded the stuff from inside the Jeep last night. I was pretty happy with what was sent:

Full soft-top
Canvas doors
Steel half doors with removable upper half
Full steel doors
Hard top
Bikini top
Roll bar mounted 6" X 9" speaker housings
Spare U-joints
Spare Warn Hubs
Warn receiver mounted clevis attaching point
Full set of 2" wheel spacers
New set of chrome door handles
Lots of little pieces

Things to do:

Replace transfer case skid plate (This one extends about four inches lower than necessary)
Install CB radio
Rewire ARB circuits (Someone stole CB radio and tore out the wiring for everything in the panel!)
Build and install a spare tire carrier
Install twin-stick shifter boot on transfer case shifters ( fabricate a cover plate for shifter hole in floor)
Fabricate and install inner fender skirts (to keep tires from slinging gunk on the engine
Mount High-lift jack

I'm sure that the list will grow, but it's enough for now 8)

As far as "why didn't I buid it myself" goes, I didn't want to have to build on the thing for 6-8 months before it would be capable of what I want to use it for now. Plus, by doing it this way, someone else gets to take the loss on all the new parts that were bought and installed (The guy that I bought it from has spent almost $20,000 on this thing in the last 2.5 years):smokin: I will still have a lot of projects that will make it mine.

Well, I have learned a true thing about Jeeps. The acronym is correct:

J Just
E Empty
E Every
P Pocket

Every time I turn around, I am spending $30 or $40 at the local parts house. Part of the problem is that EVERYTHING is available there. Impulse buys are very tempting with Jeeps. With the Unimog I had to really search for parts, which meant that I had time to think abouth whether or not I really needed what I was looking for...

It seems to flex pretty well, and feels very stable. I don't think that tire-rub is going to be an issue.

I was in Reno, NV this past week, and did not get any work done to the Jeep. After taking the red-eye home on Saturday night I got home at about 10:30AM Sunday morning. In the afternoon I went out install a new tachometer and found that someone had been messing with the Jeep while I was gone. They had tried to figure out how to work the twin stick, and managed to work one of the shift-rods loose. They also damaged the oil line going to the oil pressure gage. After I finished making those repairs I installed a new tachometer, a new dash speaker, and a fire extinguisher.

If it is, it would be best that they never tell me now ##( . I'm 98% certain that it wasn't anyone in the Taylor house. My kids are not good liars and my wife fusses about needing a ladder to get into the Jeep and would have read me the riot act for her not being able to move it if she had tried to and failed.....

If you look at the pictures you can see that the Jeep and trailer were outside of the fence. I have since moved them both inside the fence with my Sharpei. She is not what you would call "friendly" to people she doesn't know. It would be a mistake for someone to go inside the fence without a family member escorting them...

I was really impressed with the way everything works. Stretch was able to idle up an almost vertical five foot high granite wall (kind of like the water fall at Callalantee). I never even had to touch the accelerator pedal. :smokin: My only complaint is that it really gets BAD fuel mileage. According to the odometer, I am getting about 9.9 miles per gallon on the road. I am really proud of my 13 year old son. He said that he wanted mud tires for his ATV. I told him that I would buy the wheels if he bought the tires. He saved his money for little more than four months before he had enough money to buy them. Now that he has them, he won't even drive on pavement because he knows how it chews up mud tires. I really think he has learned a lot about the value of a dollar from this. More than that though is that he set a goal and achieved it.

Starting to look pretty good...

Thursday I will finish buffing everything out. It was too dark to get good pictures tonight when I quit.

Here are a few more pictures taken this morning. The color is called "Bright Amber Metallic" and it's got a whole bottle of pearl flakes in it. I'm pretty pleased with the way it came out, however it did have a little trash in it because I had to paint it outside (It's too tall to fit through the garage door...). Tomorrow I'll finish buffing everything out and will apply the decals and call it finished (cosmetically).

Like I said before, I went with Acrylic Enamel paint because it can be buffed out easily WHEN it gets scratched up. The color goes all the way through so even deep scratches can be cleaned up. Besides, It's a Jeep. They're supposed to be scratched-up aren't they?

A little off topic, but are you running a fuel cell inside the cab? Curious if you get gas fumes inside when the top is on? Is it vented outside somehow?

Sorry, but I missed this post. No, I have a custom 17 gallon stainless steel fuel tank mounted in the normal position. It is quite a bit thinner than the factory tank, but is a lot longer. The Dana 60 does not hit it, so I guess everything is good...

The only problem that I have with the tank is that it does not have a fuel level sending unit installed. How can you build a completely custom tank and not install a fuel sending unit???!!! One of these days I'm going to drop the tank and install a bolt in unit so that I don't have to guess at the fuel level. One of these days....

Here are the pics of the paint after it was buffed and all decals applied. I also painted the front diff guard, and painted and installed a Rock Crusher diff cover on the rear Dana 60. I finished my on-board-air compressor set-up, and also got some snazzy Jeep slip covers for Father's Day. I also installed a huge K&N Air filter and aluminum housing.

These pictures give a pretty good idea of the true color. The photos before made it look too red...

Thanks for the compliments guys. I forgot to mention one other thing that you can see in the pics. I grooved the tires. Take a close look at the tread on the Super Swamper tires. I used a 1/4" tip on the grooving iron and cut a V into every center lug, and cut a groove down the center of each outer lug. Tires should really grip now. :smokin:
