View Full Version : My 1999 TJ
Well I figured I throw this out there as a project build.
I got this jeep about 2 years ago BONE stock. It now has a 4" Rough Country X lift, a 1" BL, and 1" Spacers, well you can read my Sig for details.
At this moment I am in the process of building an 8.8 for the rear and regearing to 4.56 so I can put some 35's under it. This Axle swap has been the LONGEST part of my upgrades but will be well worth it in my eyes.

I hate that it seems like the more you spend the smaller the package.
Well got my D30 (super 30) shafts today. The guy I got the S30 kit from had pulled the shafts to pull the R&P and forgot to put them back in when he delivered the Axle.
All I am waiting on now is my 8.8 ARB. I received my Gears and install kit yestarday.......it's all coming together....once all the "junk" is here I will be dropping the jeep off to get the ARB's, Gears, and everyting else installed. I can't wait

paint the cover black and the SOLID yellow. you'll be able to read it from pretty far away.
Well it just keeps compounding.....I just ordered a set of DIY (Do it Yourself) weld on Beadlocks. Got a SUPER AWSOME price for a set of 5 of these. It may be a little while till I get these on due to the need for some GOOD welding on my rims to keep them airtight.
Got called the other Day re-gear and ARB for the 8.8 are done. They will need to be removed when he welds up the brackets. Going slow but it will be done by 1 April
well I have not updated on here lately and there really isn't alot to report. I went to the guys house today who is working on my jeep and the 8.8 ARB is installed and the gears are done. He disassembled the D30 and put the S30 shafts in place but hit a bump in the road, he had to order bearings and seals and a shim kit for it becasue the S30 shafts are larger. He has been working on another rig lately so until it's done he won't be working on mine too much. Once he really gets going he says it will only take 3-4days to finish. Once I get it back from him I will still have to do my SYE, track bars, adjust my trackbars, and I am gonna try adjusting the control arms to push my front and rear axle out about an inch each. then I gotta get the DS cut to lenth and I will be DONE!!!!!
Well I have not posted anything new on this lately. Their has been minumul progress on this because the guy has been busy with other projects. I just purchased a second Cigarette lighter bezel that I will be useing for my ARB switches and a second power sorce like this....... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v301/skimblz/Jeep/Electrical/DSCN0110.jpg ......... http://home.comcast.net/~tjdreams/MyJeep.html
I also just bought a Roadless gear in cab winch remote......... http://www.roadlessgear.com/Merchant2/graphics/00000001/winchctrls.jpg http://www.roadlessgear.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=RG631&Category_Code=R&Store_Code=RGJ
My jeep should have the gears, lockers, and 8.8 installed by 1 May and from there I have some ends to tie up.
Well I got word last night there is FINALLY progress being made on Lucy. The Gears/Locker install are done front and rear and the front is plumbed. He still has to remove the gears/locker and all from the 8.8 to weld up the bracketry. It is SUPPOSED to be done with His work bythe 1st of May. After that I have to install my SYE, TrackBars, make some adjustments, and do my little additions like winch remote, new lug nuts, secone switch bezel, re-install my CB and I will be ready for a shake down run.
Well guys My Lucy is FINALLY home. Here are a few pix of the 8.8 installed.

i think 8.8 that is what in melissa explorer
they hook well on BT but its all wheel drive and 5.0 surprised a few mustangs
Well another update. I dropped off my rims and DIY beadlocks today and I will pick them up Sun. Sat I am gonna plumb my brakelines, install my CB, my in cab winch remote, My 2nd switch bezel, my new Redtop Optima, top off my Diffs, and time pending I have other things I can start on.
On Sunday I am going to pick up my rims re-mount my tires. I want to TRY to do my shakedown run around 1 June.
Still need to Install SYE, get DS cut and balanced and install, wire/install my Viair compressor, Plumb my ARB's, replace my steering box, install my front trackbar, and Install my ARB and light switches.
This really seems like alot of work to me but I guess If I widdle away a little at a time I may have it done by then.

Man, your Jeep has gone thru a total transformation! Nice work mang :!: Hope you get to wheel it plenty before the next trip across the big pond.
Well after a decent days work we got some work acclomplished on my jeep. I had to order the brake lines for the rear but I got the hard lines and a bender. I will get the brake lines tomorrow and will have breaks tomorrow. Well since the breaks were a wash we went on and bought all the bolts available for my rims. Got enough for 2 rims. We got home and while I changed a bad front Unit bearing Rob ground down 2 rims to get ready for install. Once they were ready I painted them up and we loaded the 2 rims and 2 tires up and went off to Walmart. I had them do the 1/2 Mount and valve stems (all of which I got free) and we were off to home. When we got home we installed my Optima and started the rims. DANG THIS PARt SUCKED! We torqued down 3/6/9/and 12 and then placed all the others in place. We ran them all down using the air gun adn then torqued and re-torqued, filled to 30PSI and re-torqued again. After about 2 hours they held air OK. I will do my brakes tomorrow but won't be able to get the rest of the bolts for my rims till Tues or Wed. I bought 75 Bolts and 200 flat washers (I already had lock bolts) and it cost $19. They charge by the LB it was $2 and some change per lb for the bolts and $1 per lb for the washers.
All and all I LOVE the beadlocks and I guess we will see tomorrow if 20ftlbs is enough to hold air (and if the welds are air tight) I will take some PIX tomorrow in the day light because it was dark after we finally finished.

Did you not leak test them or tell the welder to do so? Easy to do. Just get a water spray bottle and fill with dish washing liquid and water. Then spray on the weld beed around the rim a few inches at a time. Then take your air hose and go around that section blowing air from the inside out. If you find bubbles mark it for welding :)
Have fun with the bolts. 32/tire takes some time.
35 bolts per tire!! No we didn't leak test THATS GONNA SUCK if the welds are leaking.......I did pump them to 30PSI and put soapy wtaer around the beads on botn sides and no bubblies I HOPE this is a good sign!!! UNFORTUANLTLY IF it is leaking I will break them down and figure where the leak is and weld it. I did run silicone INSIDE along the weld hopeing if there is a pin hole that will seal it up for me.
Brakes are DONE!!!! Gonna buy some more bolts this week (already have nuts and washers, then I will finish the other 2 wheels!!!

Thanks Guys.......well I finished the last wheel/tire and drove my jeep under it's own power for the first time since last Sept!!! The brakes leave something to be desired and I have a BAD death wobble. I still have a front adjustable trackbar to put on and some bolts to torque and I didn't balance the wheels (I put 2 QT's of ANti freeze in them as an attempt to balance) so I won't be able to determine my DW until I finish everything.

yeah I feel ya on the wobble. I am supposed to be getting a pitman arm to help mine out. I also did the same thing with anti freeze. I haven't noticed anything cause i haven't been able to get up to speed.
Well I plumbed up My tank and wired everything up today. Did I mention I HATE wiring. I built the wiring harness today. I still need to get my front ARB switch and the compressor switch, and I I still need to get a peice of hose to plumb in my Relay/Cut off Pressure switch.
My set up is a 2 gallon tank mounted in the rear of my jeep with the compressor mounted on top of it. I have my ARB solinoids plumbed straight out of the air tank and the cut off switch is 105psi shut off 85 psi turn on. I will also have a pressure guage off the tank (all though I don't need it) also coming out of the tank I have a air hose connection so I have OBA.

Placed my orders this morning for remaining parts needed. I ordered my nrake proportioning valve, 2 ARB Switches, my 1310 DS Flange adapter, and I the crush sleeve for my front Trac BAr. Sun I am going to be installing my SYE, steering Box, ARB air lines, and Track BAr. During the week this week I am going to finish my Aircompressor and mount my CB and antenna. I start a week of leave not next Mon but the following. I intend on tieing up loose ends ans doing my final adjustments and FINALLY I will be able to do a shake down prior to 1 June!!!!!!!!!
Well tonight was successful. I finished running my wiring harness for my compressor, I ran my ARB Air lines, got my rear ARB completely done and ready to go, and need to get crush sleeve and feral for my front, already ordered.
Well finish plumbing the Compressor and tested it. Worked flawlessly. The cut off did so at about 108PSI (it is a 105PSI cut off + or - 5PSI)I actuated the 8.8 Locker and jacked the rear it locked as expected. I have no leaks at the axle, A GOOD THING, and no leaks at the air tank. I have a super small leak at the solinoids I will address tomorrow.
I am waiting for the parts to tie my front air line into D30, I still need the crush insert and the thing called a ferrall then I will be able to test my front locker. Those parts shipped today so hopefully they will be here tomorrow. I also am waiting on 2 switches (one for the compressor and one for the front locker)
This morning I installed my second switch bezel (in place of the ash tray) I prepped all the wires and once the other stuff gets here I will be good to go.
Want2Wheel
05-16-2007, 09:45 AM
That is going to look good. Glad that the lockers work right. Sounds like it is comeing along great.
Thanks. My shakedown run is sceduled for 2 June here at Turkey Bay ORV Park. ANyone who wants to attend is invited
Well guys yet another update.
I got my compressor completely done and rear locker completely done. I am still waiting for the ferruale and crush sleeve for my front locker.
I pulled the stock trackbar off the front today. I need to drill the frame mount out to 9/16th, mount the new one, and adjust it.
I got the brake praprotioning valve today and will put that in Sunday
I got my 8.8 flange today. I will be doing my SYE Sun and taking measurements for my DS leanth.
I have got my wires run for My CB but need to figure where I am gonna re-mount it.
Then the only stuff left is Mount/Wire Electric Fan, Install Steering Box,
Install DS/ Ujoints/Flange, Weld LCA Skids, Mount spare Tire Rack, Add Anti Freeze to Tires, Make final Suspension adjustments, Swap Pitman Arm After drive if needed

I did 10oz of ari soft pellets in my 36" TSL's and there is not wobble at all. Has to be better when cutting a tire and not having anitfreeze end up int he ground.
Has to be better when cutting a tire and not having anitfreeze end up int he ground.
Well at least it is the Biodegradeabole animal safe Antifreeze
Hey guys and gals. Sun was my work day this week. A buddy Rob came by and we got my brake praportioning valve in and my new steering box in. I am so far unhappy with the new steering box, it steers harder than it did before, but I think it has air in the line still. The brakes feel better than they did before but still not up to par because I am turning so much weight. We also installed and adjusted my front trackbar and test drove it. I still have crazy wobbles. I am going to try an even gallon of water/antifreeze per tire, if I still get wobbles I am gonna have them balance them useing stick on weights then I may match the weight of the stick on weights and tack weld (so they will be easy to remove) on steel weight and see if that helps. This is just a thought for now so we will see.
We didn't get to the SYE yet so I have not yet got the DS cut but other than final suspension adjustments the SYE/DS is the last of my mods till she is trail ready
Well I haven't updated lately. I got my SYE done with help from a freind of mine. Only thing left now is to have my rear DS cut to leanth, and just "tune" my suspension. I have have a few little extras to put in when time allows like my electric fan but I want to find a thermostat before I wire it all up.
A buddy of mine fabbed me a tire carrier, A truss for my D30, some LCA skids for my D30/8.8 and he is going to "truss" some of the stock axle mounting points. This all falls into the extra stuff realm. It is all nice to have when it's done but not REQUIRED to wheel it. Right now my shake down will be sometime next week and my first BIG trip will be the Turkey Bay Grace/Its a Jeep trip in July.
Impressions so far:
ARB's: LOVE THEM. I love having the compressor with tank in the rear and the ability to unlock whenever I want.
Super 30: So far so good. Nice to know there are 30 Spline Chromo Shafts up front but I have not wheeled it yet so we will see.
8.8: Love it. This axle is pure Beef and with a spare set of shafts I am in great shape.
4 Wheel Disk Brakes: Not at all what I expected. I put in a Rubicon Praportioning Valve and it just isn't cutting it. I will have to address breaks later. They stop the rig but with the weight of the beadlocks and 36" swampers they are sub standard (can't imagine if I still had Drums.
4.56 Gears: I regret this with 36's. I should have went straight to 4.88.
Solid/RockCrusher Diff COvers: WOW is all I can say to these
And that was about it for this round of Mods. So far so good I just can't wait to wheel this sucker
OK fellow jeepers this is my first write up other than trail reports so bear with me. This is the story of my 1999 Jeep Wrangler Sport from my acquisition to its current state.
I bought my Wrangler in 2005 after returning from my second trip to Iraq. I had an XJ already that needed re-gearing and a new R&P up front but chose to part it out and build a TJ. When I bought my TJ it was COMPLETELY stock with only 42,000 miles on it.
http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic1.jpg
The weekend I got it home I had a ?? coil spacer lift at my house I put on it for a little extra height. http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic2.jpg I went wheeling that Sat. http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic3.jpg
I wheeled my jeep stock for quite a while. My first mod was due to my own stupidity (first two times out I had no front or rear tow hooks; I DON?T RECOMMEND THIS) well after a pretty bad stick we ripped my rear bumper off http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic4.jpg so I had to replace the bumper and get tow hooks.
After wheeling stock for QUITE some time I bought a simple 1? body lift for me jeep. This was an inexpensive mod that gave me room for larger tires. After helping a friend of mine do some work he gave me a set of Mud Kings off his Rubicon 265x75x16 (32?s) I now have MT?s, tow hooks, and a jeep starting to look like a wheeler. http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic5.jpg
I wheeled my jeep like this till I deployed for my 3rd trip to Iraq. While deployed this trip I purchased a HUGE round of mods for my jeep to include more lift, a full array of skid plates, a front locker, and a winch. I purchased a Rough Country 4? X series Lift Kit let me say I LOVE it. This thing was very complete. Other purchases were a Skid Row radiator skid plate, a Skid Row engine skid plate, a Kilby steering box skid plate, a Kilby gas tank skid plate, and a set of warrior trail corners. I also purchased a Lock Right locker to install in my Dana 30 front and mounted my M6000 winch.
Here she is just prior to the lift on the trails http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic6.jpg
Here she is with all the stuff installed on the trails http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic7.jpg
I think my first wheeling trip out I mashed my stock fenders so I chose to flat fender my jeep but couldn?t afford Tube fenders so I started cutting. My results were a decent looking flat fender that was effective on the trails http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic8.jpg
http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic9.JPG
In Aug of 06 I smashed the flat fenders even worse and tube fenders went on sale. I bought a set of Smitty built full replacement tube fenders and put them on http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic10.JPG Andy built me the bumper in this pic http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic11.jpg
I wheeled my jeep like this up until Sep 2006 when I had catastrophic brake failure so rather than put ANY money into my stock D35 I started my axle swap to the ford 8.8 in it now. This was the start of my biggest round of mods yet. I started by finding a Ford 8.8 out of a 96 or newer For explorer. By choosing these years from this truck you get the added benefits of rear Disk brakes and 31 spline axles. Once I had my axle I started buying the needed items for the swap such as brake parts, gears, install kits, well the lift goes on. Once I had everything I would need I contacted my mechanic because I can?t weld and to put this axle under TJ you need to weld all the coil spring bracketry on. I dropped everything with him and went on the lookout for locker options. I was going to get a spool for the rear and keep my lock right in the front but I stumbled upon a Super 30 kit with ARB and compressor. This upgraded me from stock 27 spline shafts up front to a BEEFY 30 spline AND Chomolly shafts. This opened the door for me to run 35? tires or bigger. Well with an ARB in the front I opted to go ahead and get an ARB for the rear to, this was my biggest purchase thus far.
My jeep sat several months over the winter while waiting for my mechanic to have the time to do the work, but I FINALLY got it back Feb 07. Once I got it back I had several loose ends to tie up. I had to plumb the rear brakes myself, plumb the ARB air lines, wire the switches and the compressor, install my SYE, build a rear DS, just ?tune? my suspension. To tackle the air supply problem for my ARB?s, I say problem because I had an air supply but it is a Viair compressor not an ARB compressor so I need a tank, I got a 2 gallon tank that fits directly behind my back seat and effectively now have on board air.
Now that my jeep is home I have finished putting it all back together and I must say I am very happy with it. After all the lift and the trimming I made room for the 36x12.50x15 Super Swamper TSL Radials I bought http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic12.jpg After installing the tires Andy started making Weld on Bead lock rings http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/pic13.jpg so I bought a set of them so I now have Bead locks too.
Somewhere in this mix there are parts I know I missed like Solid Diff Cover for my 8.8, Rock Crusher Diff Cover for my D30, Adjustable front and rear track bars, no front sway bar, rear sway bar disconnects, For Communication I have a uniden CB and Whip antenna, Alloy USA outer seals on my D30, and an upgraded Grand Cherokee tie Rod, 1? full replacement Motor Mount Lift???.well below is about as complete list of my specs I have??

I haven't posted any updates lately. I wheeled my jeep twice since complete and just about everything is working top of the line. The only issue I had was I snapped a tie-rod frame mount bolt. I have since replaced that and it worked great. I just picked up a new rollcage for it. It is a full cage that goes through the dashand mounts to the frame. I need to pain it and get it mounted in place. Jeep really came together
A few new pix:

Good to see you getting to enjoy it, we'll have to get an earlier Harlan trip up before you have to head out for the sandbox
Well guys I will have new pix to follow but new cage is in and complete, well all except frame tie-in's which is in the process of being done. Since i go thru rear tail lights about every time I wheel I am doing flush mounted LED's, and I am going to be changeing the 36's to 35" Procomp MT's

Coming along good Fred. Fred likes to wheel hard. Total disregard for body parts.
Bill I have a disregard for body panels, skid plates, body mounts....well you get the idea

Fred I do believe you forgot to add the pics of you getting pulled of a log with the what is it called again, hmmmm the uhhh uhhhh Yamaha Rhino, I do believe that was the name. The beast Lucy isnt as tough as he so claims it to be. LOL
Thats was funny. I was climbing over a log in the trail to get by another group and got high centered. I was teetering on it back and forth. They had a Rhino hook to me and with the help of 4-5 guys and the rhino I got pulled off. I went back over it in the other direction later though.
Hey guys. I have not posted anything new lately. My TJ has been up for sale but no bites so I decided to continue my build and keep it (for now). The other cage I had wasn't working out, it had been rolled and the roll tweaked it pretty bad. Well since I will be building more now I made a call to Brent at Trailworks in Nashville. He did cages for a few folks I know and they look GREAT. I just purchased a front and rear cage kit from him I will be picking up today.
This is the cage but I am slightly modifying it:

only differences will be 2 straight spreaders and 2 45* spreaders in the front and only 2 45* spreaders in the rear. I will be adding hip spreaders, spreaders in the rear and grab handles.
This is more like what I am getting:

Keep it
Well here the are for your veiwing pleasure........
this is a straight on rear shot From here you can see the basic cage design that I got from Brent. I got it with the 2 front straight bars and no rear. You can see here also the grab handle we added in the center and the 3 extra bars we added in the rear

http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/100_1241.jpg
these second two kida highlight the same things as the first. I also ordered his kit with no lower windshield spreader because I didn't want a full size bar there in my view. We added a much thinner DOM bar in it's place.
These two PIX are from each side and what we did was relocate the seatbelts (I am going to a 3" lap belt only for the front) and added hip spreaders. Yes this limits my ability to remove this cage without taking tha dash apart but Se La Ve......

And this is just a front shot where you can't see much
http://www.itsajeep.org/vBulletin/gallery/files/3/2/100_1239.jpg
I will reinnerate...YES this ties into the existing rear cage but it is very reinforced. as of right now the only part tied to the frame is the front 2 legs but while I am gone I am haveing the middle and rear frame tied also. I have 2 pair of Grab handles on order and they will be put on soon. I am VERY pleased with this new set up and I am confident enough so far to trust my life with it.
