View Full Version : Harlan ride with ItsAJeep April 13-15
Several of you are also on www.itsajeep.org as well as this site. I would like to get the IAJ gang to come to Harlan County in 2007 and maybe get the 4x4Grace people in Land Between the Lakes in 2007 as well. What do you guys think of this idea? :?:

Bring them on.
I have already made a post about this on IAJ. There is a question about how Stock friendly are the trails (assuming that we run two groups). I don't know the answer to these types of questions, so I referred the question to you guys. Also, if there is min equipment (example rock rails) that is recommended, or required, you probably want to advise.

We set the date for the Harlan trip, so you guys have to set the date for the LBL trip. I would suggest that you go during the dry months...... other than the month of June.

Sounds like a great idea.
The guys on itsajeep are all over this idea. I suspect that we will have a nice size group going to Harlan Co.,. You guys have a date in mind for your trip to LBL?

I thought July 13-14 would be a good date for the LBL trip. It is about 7 hours from here. Drive all the way to Clarksville then just go across the line and you are almost there.

Hey you guys (and gals) :!: If you want difficult trails, you gotta come try Turkey Bay! I haven't been to Land Between the Lakes (Turkey Bay) yet, but I have seen a whole lotta pics and read quite a few trail reports from Jeepers that I KNOW can wheel. It seems VERY much like Bumpus Cove (except LBL is bigger), if anyone is interested 8) Some of the trail names: Yellow Belly Gulley (like the ruts at Bumpus), Nosedive, Dogleg, Silo Hill, and Rubicon Flip (gee, wonder what that was named after? ). AND - I gaurantee you will like our hosts, the itsajeep.org group. I spent 3 days with them at Windrock and was very impressed - they're as much like a family as WE are!
Here's a pic of Yellow Belly - does this look familiar to you Bumpus vets?

Let me give you the low down on Turkey Bay.... if the place is completely dry, you can almost do most things without any major problems. Kind of like driving on a dirt road with twist  . There are some rocky hills like Silo Hill, Dog leg, rocky road, etc. that are always fun, no matter the weather. However, add a little water to the trails and they become a beast of a different color. Some hill climbs just are not safe to attempt when wet. The mud at TB is usually not deep, but rather a 2-3 inch layer that is slick as snot on an ice cube. Your tires never dig in, you just kind of float on this layer of mud. If things are too wet, these trails can really bite you as most are all hills in one direction or the other. Usually the FS closes the park when conditions are like this. New Jeepers and near stock Jeeps will like TB because there are lots of by passes. See something you don't like, drive around it. There are some kind of rough hill climbs and the like that they will just have to do one way or the other. However, we won't take them any place that we haven't taken new Jeepers and near stock Jeeps a million times before. We usually try to break into two groups, a "Mild group" and a "Wild group" so that everyone gets what they came for 8)

Is this a jeep only run? cause that place looks cool.
Land Between the Lakes... nearest big town is Cadiz, KY which is just on the other side of Clarksville, TN. (about 6-7 hour drive from Harlan).
About the Jeep only question... NO WAY is this a Jeep only event. We wheel on a regular basis with anything that has 4 wheel drive. 8) The "gang" (not an official Club) from www.itsajeep.org wheels with the same basic rules and family atmosphere that was present this past weekend. There is rustic camping (tent & RV) available inside the off road park, and camping with flush toilets & hot showers within 2 miles. The small town of Aurora, KY is 3 miles away and there are cheap motel rooms available there. The Kentucky Lake is literally right there (no matter where you are), so there is lots of opportunity for fishing at the end of the day.

This will be a 4x4Grace run (hosted by itsajeep.org) - ALL makes are welcome  Just don't get offended by the occasional friendly jab about not being a Jeep LOL - j/k
Seriously, itsajeep.org has several non-Jeep rigs that wheel with them; the Yota in the pic above, a few Samis, and even a Disco II 8) All of them will tell you how very welcome they felt with this group. Ya'll need to come & have fun!
Sam - as long as you upgrade your gears (so you won't slow down so bad on hills) and think the J-10 won't have mechanical issues, you gotta bring it man  If you liked Bumpus you'll love this place!

I didn't think so either, but didn't want anyone to be surprised at the last minute. I didn't say anything about "Butt Pucker Hill", or the Scenic Lake Shore trail.... that we may or may not be able to do depending upon the water level.

I have not figured out how to post pictures here but I have HUNDREDS of pictures of Turkey Bay. My avitar pic is Yellow Belly Gully also.
I can post pictures and a description of each obstcle. Like Don already noted and Rod too. TB has plenty of hard stuff and plenty of easy stuff and plenty in between. There are ALOT of gullies and ALOT of steep hillclimbs and decents. We have layed more than one rig on it's side and even rolled a few. The Challenge is DEFINATLY there.
TiredIronGRB
11-18-2006, 09:36 PM
Any good rocks, I don't really like gulleys and steep stuff
There are 2 rocky spots and a few hill climbs that are rocky. We have one spot we cat Rocky Top that has a few large rocks on it, Rocky Top 2 which is 3 chutes of rocks, backside to rocky top which is rocky chutes you climb, RockyRoad which is a rocky gully, Silo which is a kinda loose gravel hill climb, and Rubiflip[ which is now Blue Point, it has a few nice rocks to climb. All of these are able to be done with just a front locker and some with no locker but they are all fun
Here are a few links to TB.
Thanks Fred, I got sidetracked.

This is worth a read. http://home.earthlink.net/~tsjay49/david_nickell.html
Amazing what our govt did and still does. I'm sure we will have a great time at LBL but after readng the above article I agree with this page http://home.earthlink.net/~tsjay49/id6.html Talk about mixed emotions! I love off roading my Jeep at Turkey Bay OHV Area, but at the same time, I feel like I am trespassing on private property
I think our group always respects the land we ride on since our lord gave it to us and makes it beautiful, but we need to make sure and remember this when riding at LBL since the land was taken from people for our recreation.
Anyway I look forward to this one.

Tom J. (owner of Website & TB trail guide) makes a point to tell people in his group about this and yes, he ask people to remember this while wheel-n and to be respectful of the land.

Bev is 1/4 Cherokee, hence close to the Trail of Tears issue.
We can't control what happened in the past, but, as stewards of God's great earth, we can, indeed, revere it and do all we each can to preserve the land and the spirit of those before us. Every human has feelings regarding their heritage, whether "the old farmstead" or the abandon cemetery, or even an old picture of "how it was". Land is not always just "about the physical property". It goes way deeper than that.
We can enjoy what is there today, and as we carry on, we can pray for those touched by all the history of the land and space we wheel/live in. We simply must be the best stewards we can be. That way, the "Miss Babe's" are not completely forgotten and disregarded.
Bumping this and wanting some info. IS there camping in Harlon? Is there a cheap hotel near by? Are there admission fees to Harlon?
FYI.....Turkey Bay has camping right IN the park for $7 a night up to 2 tents on a site(I say site but it really is where ever you set up). There are some motels in the little town up the road and I think they have cabins there for like $65 a night and it sleeps like 8. The cabins are like a little apartment, a fridge, kitchen, and like 4 queen size beds
Admission to Turkey Bay is $15 for a weekend per vehicle.
How many of you are planning on making these rides?
I am gonna try hard to make the HArlon part but my son is due Feb so that part is pending My wife's health, the baby's health, and pending my jeeps status I gotta finish my 8.8 and gears
Hokie_YJ
12-14-2006, 09:31 PM
There is no admission to the park. You can camp all over the park for free, but it's primitive style. About a mile or so from the Evarts trail head there is a campsite with water, power, cable tv hook-ups, and shower house. It's something like $20/night. There are a few motels a few miles away in Harlan. There are also cabin rentals too. So pretty much you can rough it old school style, or you can stay in comfort. Whatever you prefer. :smokin:
Gordon

Fred, George I'm sure will post up more, but here's a start. Yes to camping, yes to cabins & motels (town of Harlan & Evarts), and no to fees. Check out this site. http://www.harlancountytrails.com/ We have referred to it as "Harlan", but it's really Black Mountain Off-Road Park.

Ben, You want to use my 36's? We would just have to mount them back on the H1's I have. We could get it done Monday evening if you want. Just hate for you to go up and pay to be there and not get to drive.
BTW, did you find a roomy? I think Wes is looking for someone to split with.
Id like to go for the entire weekend and camp... i could drive up and back wearing out the tires but always prefer to be towed as a precaution if im gonna push it on the trails. Is anyone interested in hauling my jeep up there? (id guess trailready it weighs 4500#?) i could pay for fuel of course...

Well no one that is coming from our group is camping that I know of. Those that will be camping I imagine could stay in Verda field. George is planning on eating in town as much as possible. But, that will be up to each individual. There is a problem right now with the IAJ site that all the others are on. So I can't get on there and ask any of them about this. I have a backup forum that I keep for that group but only 20-25 of them are on it and most never think to check it. I will see if I can get you a better answer though today.
PS I spoke with Andy1 last night and he is going to come up on Saturday and ride with me or maybe even some one else with an open seat.

Well, both a husband and a wife need some time to themselves, it's healthy for the relationship.
Sometimes men let the wives gain dominance over them to the point of having to "Ok" everything they do with them, I actually had a guy tell me today that he couldn't trade his truck because his wife wouldn't let him.
The man is to be the head of the household, he is responsible for his families safety, spiritual needs, and guidance. The woman is the weaker vessel and the husband should protect and love her like Jesus loves the church (gave his life for it).
I consider my wife's opinion on all major decisions but the final word is my responsibility, you can ask her she will agree because she knows what the scritures say about this.
After the Lord my wife is the most important thing in my life, I would be lost without her but a man...a Christian man is to follow the Lord and lead his family.

Made it home, did good considering I broke the TJ's tranny mount  There was alot more trail problems than I figured there would be, including Jazzman (bad fuel pump relay & smoking clutch). Chris & Ronnie Shoope did an awesome job leading the extreme group - between Fri & Sat they had a broken u-joint, 2 broken axle shafts, and a busted rear driveshaft. They were impressed with trails like Mason Jar, Can Opener, Crawford's Cry, both D-nation trails, etc. Vince, the Fossil trail ain't as easy as it used to be  Jazz & I were the only open diff Jeeps that climbed the straight line on it; everyone else had lockers. Marty climbed it in his nice Chevy with a heavy right foot. Bill gave it a great try, had a good line until the large rock (on the right side) tore a hole in his ProComp MT sidewall. :( Several rigs made it through the weekend without any mechanical problems (or trail damage) though.
The best part? Hearing many of them echo on the CB on the way back to the hotel after the last ride - "Even with all the rain, this place is awesome. We'll definitely be coming back!" That was Andy's quote - and he is hard to impress!  Oh yeah, I had a blast too! 8)
Only took a few pics Sat due to the heavy downpours, will post what I do have as soon as I get time to upload them. Chris & Tony got some awesome videos, Julie filmed some with Tony's camera too.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this ride happen, but most importantly to the Lord for blessing the whole event :!:

Bluegill
04-15-2007, 12:56 PM
Yep - Bill suggested it (from his own experience). Tony & I looked over all the u-joints, driveshafts, and control arms - didn't find anything wrong. One small pry with the crowbar & the problem was revealed. It's not completely broke, just hanging on by a thread. Problem is no one carried it in stock in Harlan, I plan on mail ordering a poly mount.

Yeah, fish fossil is when Bill had his tire trouble. While waiting Wes led a group to explore trail 13. I just goofed off on easy stuff in Rudy while they worked on the tire since I hadn't driven the whole trip. I didn't feel brave enough to go up 13 with all the guys with lockers (since I didn't have lockers or experience).
