View Full Version : M&G Ride Oct. 11th (Trail Ride at Bumpus)
Gordon

Well, looks like there is enough interest for two rides - one Stony and one at Bumpus. For those who have not wheeled either - Stony has more laurels/close quarters, but is slightly easier than Bumpus. For Bumpus, it'll be real tough unless you have some mods.
Both trails will take 4 to 6 hours, give or take.
So that we don't have all kinds of indecision - one thread for Stony and one for Bumpus. Sign up accordingly, and please keep discussion related to the trail noted in the title.
Thanks - and happy, safe wheeling. Wish I could be there.
Unless anyone has objections, try for a 10:00 am start at the cul-de-sac.
Here's a copy of some links that Aaron posted up in the other thread.

The trenches have bypasses, but Lady Bumpus is not for the faint of heart.

Aaron, thanks for the offer to head up this event. I am working until noon that day (in Erwin), and may be able to catch up to you all at the lunch spot around 12:30 or so. I am planning to try to do so.
In order to finish up by 5:00 or so, a 10:00 to 10:30 start time would be recommended. I'd stay with the meeting at the cul-de-sac at 10:00 and roll by 10:30.

For you folks who have not done Bumpus before, this is one of the more challenging trails, and requires due caution. Proper tires & tow points are needed. Strapping may become necessary. At least a small lift is recommended, and a rig that is in good operating condition is mandatory. Briefings before and during the event make it much more safe and enjoyable. There are a number of spots where spotting & patience is needed. Treated with respect, Lady Bumpus can be very entertaining & rewarding, however, she can be tough at times.

Another pointer - as experienced from the last M&G ride at Bumpus - please come prepared to stay a while if need be - it is practically impossible to estimate how much (rig) carnage will occur.

Slick rock is gona SUCK
Gordon
10-08-2008, 08:58 PM
Slick Rock, when wet, can be a challenge for sure - the high line would not be the best choice if overly wet. Then again, it's been awhile since a Bumpus flop. :icon_mrgreen:
Use due caution, use spotters, and do not be so "macho" as to not ask to pull cable if need be. Have fun, but BE SAFE!
Lady Bumpus can be quite unladylike at times.

I had a great time today. I did the rocks for the first time. Dean was a great spotter and got me as far as I could go with my setup. It was a lot further than I would have thought. Babyjeepwoman made a lot of the trail look easy, and never broke a nail. We had a great group, and I think everyone had a good time. It was a great day and great fellowship.

Everyone met at the cul de sac around 10 am. Shortly after we said a blessing over the ride and headed up the trail. We met up with surfersami who was having some electrical problems with the trooper. after assisting him with the fuel pump wiring, and getting his rig going again, we were off. I have to say this was about the tamest I have ever seen lady Bumpus. Everyone made it over Jeepster with no problems, and It was fun watching Dean and his monsterous CJ come over Jeepster in two wheel drive taking up the whole trail. We moved on to slick rock. While slick rock was a bit damp, everyone made it up without a problem. we continued on to the lunch spot, but before we arrived, we decided to let a few of the big boys play in the rock garden. Dean powered his CJ through the rocks without much trouble. Jhilltn attempted, but his attempt was short lived after a huge rock refused to let him past, forcing him to back off and end the fun. Chris (AMsting) decided that he wanted to have a go at the rock garden at this point. This was one of the most amazing things Ive seen yet. Chris' CJ is open/open but crawled through the rocks like they were nothing. Props to Dean for his great spotting through the garden. We moved on to the lunch spot, ate a quick bite and then everyone made their decision as to whether or not to try the stairs. Rob was the first one up, and crawled up them like they were a paved interstate road. A few first timers to attempt the stairs were, Maynard, Andrea, and a friend of Johns (jhilltn). I didnt get his name, but being open/open, him and his Jeep made the steps look easy, as did Maynard and Andrea. We moved on to the trenches where everyone made it through, all the while managing to keep the body panels straight. We made the last hill climb to the top and everyone chose if they were going back down the trail, or down the fire road. I chose to take the fire road, and will let someone else chime in for the report of the descent.
...on a side note, This was Tamara's first trip up Bumpus, and as much as she hates fourwheeling, I figured for sure that she wouldnt like it. Much to my amazement, she said that she would definitely go agian, and that she didnt mind it as bad as some of the others because the main trail isnt real "bumpy". (shes been to stoney and dick creek and was comparing the rough ride of that with Bumpus.)

Did very well actually. We had started up the trail when the caught up with us. They turned around at the rockgarden. They had a little one with them that was a bit scared so they decided to go. Nice meeting them though, even though I didnt get to speak to them much.

Kewl. Jamie called me at my son's football game needing last minute directions to the trailhead (they were almost at the end of hwy 107 at that point). Thanks everyone for a fun ride at Bumpus. The Trooper with good tires actually made it everywhere unassisted. Thanks for the great spotting. Didn't even need the winch this year. Thanks for the help finding the electrical problem. I would have hated to miss the ride up. Sorry I had to leave after the lunch spot, but I had been out of town the week before and needed to get back to help my wife with the kids. What a great event, and thanks George for your hospitality, I know you humbly give credit to God for giving you the land to share, but YOU SHARE, and I think I can soeak for everyone and say we really appreciate it. Sorry I couldn't stay to help you clean up though. Looking forward to our next outing. I remebered a lot of you all from the Spring M&G, I appologize if I didn't remember your names. God bless you all.
