Hey guys, I am going to be in town on leave for the last two weeks of September. I've not been wheeling in months and I'd love to hit a trail or two. Any takers? Maybe Stoney creek?

I'll be in town the 13th through the 28th, and pretty much any day will be good for me. So anyone who is interested post up dates that work for you and as it gets closer we will finalize a day and time.

I spoke to Brian W. from Bristol today. He was a new member on the JK-forum and was looking for some people to go wheelin with. I told him about the ride saturday, and he wanted to join us. He has a new Rubicon and said he had already heard a lot of good things about Grace. He seemed very definate, so he probably needs to be added to the list.

We are meeting at Food City in Elizabethton at nine o'clock. Your truck and trailer will be fine there. It's about five miles from the trailhead, or you could leave it at Hunter School, which is less than a mile from the trail head.

Was the winching op for the truck bed, or did something else enter into it?

there was alot of winching and strapping today. We did use the winch on the truckbed, but mainly on Dons rig, as well as Outbacks, and Gulleydogs.

Here was the group today heading to the trailhead.

Adurbin
09-20-2008, 10:23 PM
We all met up at Food City @ 9:00AM. After waiting around for everyone to arrive, we departed and made it to the trailhead at 9:30, blessed the ride and hit the trail. With a rig count of 19 on stoney, our pace was steady but not rushed. We proceed without incident to the first obstacle..the creek bed. Several of us proceded to take the harder line through the creek while a few decided the to bypass. Not much happening here so we proceeded onward.

Almost everyone did the hill climb that shortcuts the left had u-turn that points you onward toward pinto ridge. On the hillclimb each of us got to see the advantages and disadvantages of short vs. long wheelbase. Without too much struggle, but having to give it a few tries, the long wheelbase suburban driven by Gulleydog eventually muscled over the sharp breakover at the crest of the climb. There are several creek crossings at the top but there is one that has a massive pile of rocks that make up the bed of the creek.

This section is where the fun of the day really began. We decided to play on the rocks here, which provided much entertainment and some carnage as well. Chris (AMsting) led off up through the rocks without incident as did the next couple of rigs. Jhilltn and his TJ were the first to take the harder of the two lines, pulling off the line without much incident except for having to give a couple of "back up and bump-its". Next up was Maynard's(Nardo) friend (sorry for failing to remember your name, there were so many today) He powered his rear locked F150 onto the rocks, but the fun was short lived, getting the undercarriage caught up on a couple of massive rocks. This was where we got our first lesson in winching/snatchblocking. With the help and power of Jhilltn's Warn, and Rob and Chase working the line, we were able to get the truck out without any real carnage.

Daniel (Mud&Rox) chose to take his rover through the hard line as well, also without any carnage. The next few rigs chose to take the easier of the two lines, 96countryxj (who deserves kudos this only being his second trail ride and making it look easy), JKcaveman, who I must say is not afraid to put his brand new Gem of a Jeep in a rocky perdicament of a tight squeeze (more on that in a bit), and myself all pulled forward. Jeff (Outback), chose to take his landrover up the hard line and discovered that his disco really only needs two wheels even though it came equiped with four, and that the rear of his rig was in need of more lift.(there will be pics of this to come im sure). After implanting a boulder the size of a refrigerator under his rig, it was more winching. Everyone proceeded up the creek bed to return to the trail when all of a sudden..We STOP. Turns out Daniel (Mud&Rox) had run his front passenger tire into a jagged rock and caught a flat. While he was fixing this, Don (JKcaveman) realized that its hard to squeeze a watermelon through a garden hose.

In this same creekbed there is a huge rock that you have to manuever around that gets you very intimate to the tree on the other side of the creek. Realizing that the JK was not going to fit through the gap without body damage. We decided to pull cable to manuever him around the tree without scratching or denting his rig. Pics on this will come soon too. This truly amazed me as this is a small hole for even a TJ to fit through, much less a full width vehicle. After regrouping, we all proceeded to pinto hill. This is where we learned another lesson about wheelbase. I have to give David (Gulleydog) an A for effort as he tried and tried and tried again to move the long Suburban up pinto ridge without assistance. After several attempts, it was time to break out the straps. We learned another lesson here. A Suburban out wieghs an XJ by a long shot. It ended up taking an XJ and a Rubicon to tug the Suburban to the flatter ground past pinto.

Next up..FORD HILL. Chase and I headed up first in his Jeep to assess what was going to need to be done to move the truck bed out of the trail. The remedy that we found was to winch the bed back to the spot of its originality. After pulling cable on the truck bed and moving it out of the way, we all proceeded up ford hill. It was again fun to watch 96CountryXJ make the trail look easy, managing his first trip up ford without incident. There had been some mention that Ford hill had been washed out more, making it harder..but to be completely honest, today was the easiest ive seen it. After conversating at the hilton for a good while, we decided to move up to the towers and get a group shot and close the ride. Great trip today..very fun and eventful. I have to say there is never a dull moment.

Thank you guys so much, I had a blast!

Here is a set of around 100 pictures my passenger and I took that turned out well, the rest were blurry (at the beginning I handed him a camera he had never used before, and neglected to turn on auto focus for him... oops!) and some had some odd coloring going on. I'll take those to work monday and see if I can work some magic on them.

I also cut out a LOT of the duplicates, with digital I have a bad habit of just snapping away because hey, my card will hold 500+ images, why not!

Here are the pics from my camera. I haven't edited them at all--hopefully I can get that done soon.

There is a rock at Stoney that has my name on it. I am ready to go back!

Well the one on Ford Hill really has your name on it. Was that the same rock?

WoW !!! What a great trip. That trail was a little rougher than I like but, Thanks for all the help with straps or the cheering section. Things learned. Wheelbase ! I'm glad I did not try the garden hose. If I had we would have had to cut Don's tree down. What a great group of people. You all should be proud to belong to something like 4x4 Grace. Some great pics so far that I've seen. Anyone that didn't make it missed a great ride. Thanks again Gulley

Nope, different rock. However, I am thinking about carrying a Sharpie marker to sign those 'special' rocks. :icon_mrgreen: That rock on Ford Hill yesterday has a little bit of my paint on it--that is the one that gave me my first battlescar.
