This a build thread I posted on Jeepforum.com. I figurd I might as well post it here too. This thread will continu as the YJ undergoes more mods.

Thought I would post up about my SOA and axle swap.

A guy in my club had basically given up wheeling so we worked out a trade. He got my stock axles, a set of stock tires, and $900. I got a D44/D60 combo from a '79 F-250 setup SOA for a YJ, 4-wheel disc, 5.38's. Both axles are open diff. but I plan to lock them soon. I also got two sets of wheels and tires, one set of 35" X-Terrains on steel wheels, and a set of 36" Military OZs on 8-bolt H1s which I still have to pick up.

I took it out on it's first trip over the weekend. I went to the Black Mt. Recreational Park in Harlan County, KY. It performed pretty well, but I still have some issues to fix. I need longer shocks, I knew mine were way too short but I wanted to get it on the trail anyway. I have to get a anti-wrap bar installed. Also the pinion angle is set a little too steep so I need to get some shims to fix that. Overall I'm extremely pleased.

Current configuration is SOA with 1.5" BDS spring in the front, stock springs with AAL in the rear, and M.O.R.E. 5/8" shackles F/R. It sits about .5" lower in the rear, but I'm gonna get some matching BDS springs for the rear. As of right now it measures about 29.5" to the bottom of the rocker panel. It's a huge improvement over 2" of lift and 31's.

Here's some pics:

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e102/boomboom33/Jeep%20Pics/P1000100.jpg

Build cost tally:
Axles, wheels and tires - $900
Teraflex ESS - $240
Custom driveshaft built locally by Fleet Pride - $280
M.O.R.E. 5/8" greaseable shackles - $173+shipping

Total cost so far - $1593.00

That total doesn't include all the various Grade 8 bolts I bought to replace all the seized up crap that I had to cut out from under the Jeep, or the 3 or 4 trips to Advanced Auto for " the small stuff" at about $50-$60 a pop. I also still have to get new long travel shocks. I'm going to do the F-250 shock tower swap on the front, and maybe make my own shock mounts for the rear out of some box tubing between the framerails.

Hey ben how are the 5.38's working for you? Is your YJ still a DD?

Actually the 5.38's are working pretty good. It's almost like stock. It is still my DD, but not for much longer. I'm dropping off my Ranger this weekend to have wheel bearings put on the front end. Then when it's tagged and insured it will be my DD. Then maybe I can start working toward some of my future plans for the YJ. :smokin:

I will take pics of the shim install, but it may be a week or two before I get to it. :(

The front axle is not 78 or 79 Ford. It's low pinion which I think makes it 76. The info is sketchy on low pinion ford axles. Just posting in case you need parts like bearings for it.

I guess you're right, I'm not sure on the exact year. I do know that it is low pinion, but Brian had cut off the knuckles and rotated them to get the pinion up a little bit. Brian might know the exact year that it came from

The deal was just too good to pass up on the winch, and it the sale was ending soon. Lockers will be my next major purchase, probably a Detroit for the rear. I'm not gonna lock the front right now.

Well I installed my winch today. I forgot to take pics during the install, so all I have pics of is the finished install. Here's a few:

I also installed an Optima Yellow Top. I got it at a killer deal from Advance Auto, it's nice to have friends at the parts store. And yes that is a bungee strap holding it down. It's only temporary until my BTF battery box gets here.

I did the same thing on my trailer. I needed a hardwired switch instead of the remote to operate the winch so I bought a good weatherproof switch from DB Electric. I think it was $6. Well ever since the SOA and axle swap I've had some pretty bad axle wrap issuse. Which that's to be expected on a SOA rig. Pulling out from a dead stop felt like it was gonna rip the driveshaft out. I finally got around to having Jarret build me a traction bar. He did a great job, and it makes so much difference now.

Before I had to feather the clutch and try to be gentle pulling out, now I can romp on it from a dead stop and there is no axle wrap at all. You can realy feel the rear end hook up now. So finally what little power those four angry squirrels can muster is actually being put to the ground.

Those aren't H1 wheels, they are 8 bolt HMMWV (Humvee) wheels. All H1s had 12 bolt wheels

BillM
02-09-2007, 02:27 PM
Am I wrong to assume that ALL humvees are H1's. Hence the number designation of 1.

TiredIronGRB
02-09-2007, 02:55 PM
Yes, all the military ones are HMMWVs, the H1 is the consumer model very different. So if you say H1 wheel anyone in the know is going to think a 12 bolt so when ordering anything for them specify either Humvee 8 bolt or 12 bolt because the O-rings are different....there's also two different O-rings for the 12 bolt wheel (two versions of the wheel as well).

I'm gonna look around and find someone to recenter them, I'm not gonna try and do it myself. My boss told me that FleedPride used to recenter wheels, I'm not sure if they still do or if they can do this kind of wheel. I'm also gonna check with a few machine shops and see if they could do it.

Yep, it's Rustoleum Hammered Black. It really turns out closer to what I would call a charcoal color, but it looks really good. It takes several coats to cover, when you spray it on it leaves little pinholes. You just have to recoat it a few times. When I was taking the pictures I actually noticed 4 or 5 spots that I need to touch up a little.

Yeah the anti-wrap bar has bushings on the axle end, and has a heim joint on each end of the shackle. It works really god that way, there's no binding at all when it flexes.

Right now the crossmember is just for the anti-wrap bar, but it will probably eventually be part of a new skidplate.

Jarret built all of it, but I believe it's built from 1.5" or 1.75" HREW.

Today I installed the beadlock inserts from Stazworks. They were really easy to install, it took me about 20 minutes to do all 4 of them. All the tools i needed were a small ratchet strap, pry bar, long flat screwdriver, and a rubber mallet. I just used the ratchet strap to compress them a little bit. The strap should be used across the diameter of the insert instead of around the circumfrence. Then use the other tools as needed to gently persuade them to go inside the tire. Here's a few pics of them installed.

I managed to get a little done today after the rain finally quit. I got the new rear brake calipers put on, and finally got the new wheels and tires on the Jeep. I actually drove it today for the first time in months.

I still need to get the exhaust leak fixed, fix the center pin on the front passenger side leaf spring, and bleed the brakes. It was fun driving it today with no brakes. Anyways, here's some new pictures.

OK ben here is my input on your jeep.

A. The rear end is sagging.
B. Take that hard top off and put the newly acquired softtop on. This will alleviate problem A
C. I think you should paint the tube fenders to match the jeep.
D. The wheels and tires look awesome!
E. I've only seen ur rig on the trail 2 times.

So A and B are mandatory in my book and C is just for looks, D = congrats, E = lets go wheelin.

That jeep has came a long way from a year ago when I first met you. Can't wait to see it on the trail soon.

The reason the rear end is sagging is because it's still on stock springs with an AAL, while the front is on 2" BDS spring. I've got two more BDS springs to go on the rear and I'm gonna try to get them on this week.

I do need to get that softtop on, I just haven't had the time yet. Too much other junk to fix. And yeah my Jeep hasn't seen a trail since Jnauary, it's killing me. It will be done this week though.

Yeah this weekend will be the test to see where it rubs, then a little "gentle massaging" will be done. It will eventually have a full comp cut, but a comp cut just looks kinda silly without a stretched wheelbase.

With a lot of help from George today we got the locker installed in the front axle, and the new Yukon 4340 shafts and Superjoints installed as well. I picked up a set of drive flanges from Steve this evening. I should have it all back together by the first of next week at the latest.

Also put in a new set of LED taillights. They make my Jeep's butt look so much more sexy! I just have to figure out why the turn signals don't blink now, they just stay solid. I would say it's the LED's, but they did it before i put them on. The other day I pulled the old taillight off and unplugged it to test to see which wires were which. When I plugged it back in the blinker just stayed solid.

I forgot the camera today, but I'll snap some pics when I get it all buttoned up.

i'm no electrician, but i know that your supposed to use a different flasher relay for LEDs. it has something to do with difference in current.

Bluegill
09-15-2007, 03:51 AM
Your front axle sounds like it's ready for pounding!

As for the tailights, as long as your LED assemblies have the built-in resistor, they shouldn't cause any blinker issues. From what you described of the "pre" LED situation, sounds like one of your wire connections isn't working (as in, not actually connected) - probably at the connector itself, or at the old tailight housing. The YJ's I've seen have the old fail-safe blinker; if the relay thinks a bulb is burnt out, it will stay solid. My FSJ does the same thing.

I thought you were doing a 60. Good move on sticking with the 44. Now you can focus on a V8 swap etc this winter.

Can't wait to see it now.

Hokie_YJ
09-15-2007, 10:03 AM
I was gonna go 60, but since I'm eventually gonna be running a 231/300 doubler I'll need a Chevy 60. I'm gonna get all the parts to do motor and drivetrain swap, rear 4-link and stretch, and front axle swap. I'm gonna make sure I have everything before I start. It definately won't happen this year, I'm just gonna hope that 44 holds together until it can happen.

The locker is a Powertrax No-Slip. Same thing as a Lock-Right, it's just supposed to be quieter on the street. I was able to get it new for the same price as a Lock-Right so I went with it.

TiredIronGRB
09-15-2007, 10:10 AM
It's a much beefier looking locker than the Lock rights.

Jeep07
09-15-2007, 11:07 AM
Wth those shafts and Joints on 37's with a 4 banger you will be hard pressed to brake anything. Now its time to adjust your driving style again. Your use of the skinny pedal will reduce significantly. It will be slow crawling now.

Hokie_YJ
09-20-2007, 07:32 PM
Well the junk is back together, I took it to George's last night and cruised around a bit. It went throught the rock garden pretty easily. I thought with the drive flanges and a front locker the turning radius on the street would suffer a little, but it seems to be about the same. It is a little harder to turn on the trail though, but not too bad.

Tomorrow I'm gonna pick up a heavy duty flasher relay, I'm told that will fix the turn signal problems. I'll snap a couple pics of the taillights when I get them working right.

So last week I dropped the YJ off at Drake's for some new tubework. Here's a few pics of the results. Sorry the pics aren't the best, it was dark when I got there tonight. As always Drake did an awesome job, I love the new look of it. :smokin:

Just reposting some of what was lost from this thread. Copied and pasted from another board.

I had Drake over at Tangent Design http://www.tdoffroad.com/ build a new cage in my YJ last week. It's a full 6 pt. cage welded solid to the frame. It also has the seats and harnesses mounted on the cage. Drake does awesome work, and I'd highly recommend him to anyone.

I've had a couple questions recently about my Ipod stereo setup. I had the info posted before. but I guess it was lost in the site crash. Here's a brief little write-up on it. It's really a pretty simple set up, and not too expensive either.

You'll need this cable that hooks into the dock connector on the Ipod and converts it to RCA outputs.
Amazon.com: Cables To Go 4-Feet RCA Stereo to Dock Connector Cable for iPod: Electronics

There is also this cable that does the same thing but it has 12v hot/ground wires that you can hook up and it will charge the Ipod too. Tony (admar2) found this cable after I had finished mine.
Amazon.com: Direct Audio Input From iPod Dock Connector to RCA Cable: Electronics

Then I used this little RCA line level controller for a volume knob.
http://www.darvex.com/miva/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=PRC1&Product_Count=1

From the output on the volume knob you run your RCA to an amp just like normal.

Here's the guy on pirate that I bought the waterproof amp and speakers from. I got the 400w amp, and the 8" 300w wakeboard tower speakers.
http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=657610

I used a 600w and smaller amp install kit from Wal-Mart to hook up the amp. I had an extra aux. swith in the dash that already had power to it so I used that switch to power the amp on/off. Then just wire the speakers up and you're good to go.

Andy's01
07-06-2008, 11:30 AM
Ben,

I wonder if you could do the same thing with a Sat. Radio. I have the Pioneer Inno and I really don't want to put a radio back in my jeep. It would be sweet if I could just have the Inno hooked directly to the amp and speakers. I am terrible with electronics (just ask Tony) so hook a brotha up.

Hokie_YJ
07-06-2008, 12:02 PM
What kind of output does your receiver have? If you can find a cable that will convert that to RCA it should work.

I found them a little cheaper on e-bay. I think they're gonna be perfect. The elastic strap adjusts to pull them tight so they seal around your eyes, but they still breathe good and don't fog up. Also the strap snaps off, and they have temple pieces that snap on so you can wear them as sunglasses too.

Found a deal on Craigslist locally that I couldn't pass up. It's a TPI 350 from an '87 Trans AM GTA, only 58k miles. I got it w/ all the acc., computer, wiring harness, and the factory 2WD 700r4. Got the whole package for $650.

It'll be a while still. I've got to work out the wiring, radiator, motor mounts, fuel cell, TC adapters, etc. I also have to build my 60 since it's gonna be pass. side drop now.

With a full time job and a full time load at school right now I don't have much time to work on it. I graduate in May though so I'll have more time after that. Until then I'll keep planning and collecting parts.

Tonight me and George got the motor unloaded. Pulled the 700r4 off of it, and also got all the old hoses and the rat's nest of wiring off of it. Then we mounted it on the engine stand and rolled it back in the corner so it can wait for the swap to begin.

Hopefully in the next few days I'll start tearing into my 60 and get started on building it. Already picked up a set of high steer arms, 35 spline stubs, and 35 spline flanges. I'm also trying to work a deal on some 5.38s. Still have to pick up a Detroit and install kit etc. I also need to find some SRW hubs.

Got a long way to go, but I've got a decent start on it.

Sounds good Ben. Not sure where you might find some SRW hubs for the front. Maybe Chris in Harlan?

I'll probably get them from either GMpartsdirect or off of E-bay.

This evening we rolled my 60 into the garage and I started tearing into it. Got all the steering off of it, and also got the old calipers off too. I pulled the cover to confirm that it did have 4.56s in it. The gears and carrier are in great shape, too bad I can't re-use them. They'll be for sale as soon as I pull them out. I've got a set of 5.38s on the way for it and I'll be picking up a Detroit for it later.

It looks like this axle has had some work done to it recently. It looks like the pass side kingpin has been rebuilt not too long ago. The tie-rod and TRE's look to be pretty new as well as the pass. side u-joint.

I also dropped off the template we made to have a Lexan windshield cut for the YJ. It's gonna bolt directly onto the cage, the tabs for that are on the way from PolyPerformance. I was hoping to get that done before I head to Harlan next weekend in case of bad weather, but it'll be tight trying to get it done.

There's not really anything to take pics of. Right now all I've got is a engine sitting in the corner on a stand, and a nasty old 60 on some jackstands. :icon_lol:

I got a little more done on the axle tonight. Got the hubs, caliper brackets, and spindles off of each side. I pulled the shafts and discovered that my gut feeling that this axle had the neck-down style shafts was correct. I hate it when I'm right... :icon_lol:

Kinda leaves me with a dilemma. Do I run these inner shafts and just wait for them to snap? Do I try and find a set of the non neck-down style inners and run them hoping they'll hold up? Or do I just bite the bullet and buy a full set of chromos, and CTM joints? :eusa_think: I'm thinking chromos.

Hokie_YJ
12-22-2008, 10:46 PM
Ok, I'm a dummy. Yeah I know, HUGE surprise there. :icon_lol:

After doing a little more research on Pirate and looking at some pics it turns out that my shafts are NOT the neck-down style. I guess I'll be running these after all. At least until I can afford some chromos.

Derrickalda
12-22-2008, 11:07 PM
this might be a dumb question...

are you saying a D60 can be sketch with 37s locked?

Hokie_YJ
12-22-2008, 11:13 PM
There were certain years that the shafts necked down between the yoke and the splines. Those shafts would be the weak point in the axle.

I don't think they'd break with 37s, but I don't plan on staying with 37s. I'm planning on going with either 39" Reds, 40" LTBs, or 42" Iroks.

40" LTBs are backordered until March-April ( I can't find them anywhere ). When looking at a Krawler all I can find is the " Half Tread Reds", the concrete course tire. But a 42" sticky Irok might be the way to go...

I bought Wes' 40" pitbulls for my rig, so I'll get to run them through their paces next year.

Chromos for you Ben would be a good choice! I've seen you wheel, no sense taking chances. And BTW you are more than welcome to help me pick up a set of the Longfield Dana 60 CV axles I've been looking at.... :icon_exclaim:. Hopefully by Feburary-March I can have a set of those underneath the front. I need to find a way to hang with you "big guys"

If your looking at Dana 60 U-joints, Bobby's 300m joints are pretty trick....

Jeep07
12-23-2008, 01:54 AM
Bobby Long's stuff if top notch! To bad the 60 cv's aren't the price of the yotas :)

Btw JR my bro in law is supposedly bringing his trailer down to haul those tires back.

Hokie_YJ
12-23-2008, 08:56 AM
When I do go chromos it'll probably be 10Factory's (formerly Alloy USA) shafts, and CTM joints. I'd love to have the Longfield CV's, but I can't justify that kind of money right now. If I was competing there'd be no question, but for a trail rig I just can't justify it.

BillM
12-23-2008, 09:15 AM
Do the 10factory's come with the lifetime warranty like Alloy did?

Oh, and get back to work... ;)

Hokie_YJ

They come with a 10 year warranty, and I AM working. :icon_mrgreen:

I had Longfields in my Dana 44 on the Jeep with 4.56 gears and 39" TSL Super Swampers with a built 360. I pounded the snot out of those joints and couldn't break them. I had a mildly built 302 in my 73 Bronco with 5.43 gears and 35" MT Claws, and couldn't break the CTMs ( I broke a dozen or so Spicer joints...)

My point is this; for a lot less money the Longfield joints will do the exact same job as the CTMs. When I bought the Longfileds for my CJ there was about $150 between the price of the CTMs and the Longfields. I chose to try the Longfields because of price and because of the research that I had done on Pirate4x4 and other sites. After running both brands of joints, my personal opinion is that spending the extra money on CTMs is a waste.

The guys that have wheeled with me know that I am rough on my stuff. After installing the CTM and Longfield joints I never had a joint related failure. I think that you will be happy with either brand. For me personally, I would take the money that I saved by buying the Longfields, and invest in the CrMo shafts... You can't go wrong with either brand of joint.

The problem with Dana 60 shafts is there is only a small handful of manufacturers making a true domestic shaft. One being Moser (who doesn't offer a 4340 shaft, or give any warranty on offroad use), and Dutchman who finish works Superiors shafts, but only warranties breaks at the splines and no where else...10 years. This was what I was told by the individual companies.

AlloyUsa (and precision gear) has been purchased by Omix-ada which I feel is a good thing. From what I learned yesterday they hope to have their facilities pumping out parts again, and honoring the warranties for the existing shaft. India material, machined in the US.

10factory headed up by Ron, formally of Alloyusa, has been shipping their front shafts out, but they are uncertain if they are going to do rear shafts anytime soon. India material with US machining the last I heard.

Yukon, same as always, a import shaft that is fairly durable but very affordable.

From what I've researched is even if the import shaft is reported to be 4340, there are such fluctuations in the quality of the steel that there is no way of telling for sure of what grade you are getting (could be getting a near stock quality shaft). I do understand if you have a warranty you have a warranty, however shaft damage generally causes further component damage.

If I price a domestic shaft with high grade u joints, I am scratching on the door of a lifetime warrantied 300m shaft with great customer service from Bobby. Trust me the price makes me nauseated, but I absolutely, positively hate trail and camp rig repairs! ( granted anything can break ) especially when your a "foot to the wood" kinda wheeler, *cough*Ben Cough*..

I've been tossing these ideas around for awhile, so who knows...!

Chase @ eastcoastgearsupply.com will be stocking the 10factory shafts, and if you have a warranty issue, he can send you one immediately from his shop, while he waits on the warranty shaft from 10factory.

Hokie_YJ
12-23-2008, 01:02 PM
Dang JR, you've given me to much to think about. My brain can't handle all that. :icon_lol: If I do go with the 10Factory's I'll probably get them from Chase. Who know though, maybe i will go with Longfields.

At any Rate I'll be running the factory shafts for a while, until i can afford to buy something else.

I'd say the best thing to do, is just sit back, save up, and wait to see which one of these companies look the most promising.

a ten year warranty isn't worth a dime if the company is a pain to deal with, you break often, and if their no longer in business:icon_mrgreen:

Yesterday evening I spent about an hour on the 60 with a wire wheel on the grinder. It cleaned up really good. Today I installed the BTF high steer arms. These things are seriously beefy! I still need to buzz off the old shock mounts and steering stabilizer mount. I just didn't have any sawzall blades last night.

Last week I finally got around to installing the new Lexan windshield. We'll see how long it lasts. Today I put on one of the new covers for my Corbeaus. The other one hasn't gotten here yet. I got a set of all Vinyl covers from Brent @ Trailworks. My old ones had the cloth center and I was tired of having a wet butt everytime it rained. Plus the cloth part had faded quite a bit. Here's a few pics:

The amp on my stereo blew a fuse on the last trip out. Today when I went to replace the fuse it arced as soon as it touched the contacts and blew immediately. Not too good... :icon_lol: I'm gonna take it to my electronics class on Wednesday and let my teacher look at it and see if we can figure out what happened.

I'm kinda suprised that it lasted this long. It's a marine grade amp, but it's endured some serious downpours and been covered in mud several times. I've got some ideas kicking around to protect the new one when i get it though.

Also I've got a Detroit on the way for the 60, it'll be here on Monday.
