Project number one needs to be a cage. A cage is always a good idea anyway, but given past history with driving style combined with the new really short wheelbase, that thing will be on it's top the first week. You need a cage first thing.
hammerhead06
08-17-2006, 10:29 AM
lengthening the wheel base about 14 inches, cage is in the future, remember guys, this isn't my d/d so the only time i'll really be driving it is on a trail, so regardless what gets done first or last, it will all get done before i really start being hard on it

Just thinking about your safety. A Trail only rig is typially even more dangerous since you really don't care if it breaks. Safety first!

well since i like to breed conflict, i'll argue that capability and reliability can be the same thing. and ugly wiring and faulty wiring are close cousins but not the same. there's your topic, talk amongst yourselves ( i'm a little peclempt)

will be plenty "o" pictures to come
Speaking from experience here, I had a Sami and wheeled it a few times without a full cage and wheeled it hard. It took about 2 times of almost rolling it that I added a full cage. My fiance' (now my wife) almost insisted I had a cage since I about dumped us on our lid at Globe (now an illegal trail).
Sami's are not the most stable rig and I too drove with a heavy right foot. You will learn due to the little 1.3 liter engine, it takes a bit of gas to get over obstacles due to the lack of torque. Tcase gears in the range of 4.16:1 low range from calmini or similar should be in your future as they help tremendously. They are relatively cheap compared to others at about $450 when I bought them.
A rear locker too makes a huge difference.
Just respect this thing for a potential roll over and learn how far you can lift a tire before it goes over. I had it down to where I could pull up a tire and teeter and still save it!!!!
Good luck and let me know if you need any help with it. I am somewhat experienced with Sami's!!!

so i did some wheelin and dealin, have a 1.6 litre out of a sidekick coming this weekend, that should put a little pep in it's step
Spartan081681
08-30-2006, 04:20 AM
Good idea going with a 1.6, doing the same thing to mine right now. If its a 16v I got an extra harness and computer I could sell ya.
What sire tires are you planning on?
hammerhead06
08-30-2006, 12:40 PM
it's carbed, has everything needed except adapter to put it in, running 33's with toyota axles and stock yota 4.10's will eventually be on 35's after transfer case regear, then who knows
BJack
08-30-2006, 01:14 PM

08-30-2006, 02:13 PM
hey what happen to the 44's?
hammerhead06
08-30-2006, 02:58 PM
he said it was carbed and came from a sidekick, i assumed it was a 1.6, calmini sells a kit for install for the 1.6 that includes a 7 psi fuel pump, i've never seen a efi that only needs 7psi ? As far as the 44's, found it was more economical to use parts that i have instead of buying more stuff and coming out of pocket on more parts that i already have laying around........maybe someday the sami will see d44's
Spartan081681

The 1.6 8v has a carb.

Spartan081681
08-30-2006, 03:55 PM
So its a single port FI? Odd I remeber reading the 8v was an easier swap cause you don't need the FI stuff, so do they just swap on the carb from the 1.3?

Yes, that's exactly right. It's an easier swap because all the wiring is the same and the intake's a direct bolt in.
When I did mine I swapped the 1.3 carbed intake on the 1.6 and saw almost no difference at all. I was sick. I had a buddy that did the same swap and retained the fuel injection ( I was about 18 and couldn't figure out how to do it at the time ) and his ran alot stronger. It wasn't until a few years later when I put pane on it that you could really feel the power difference.

I've people refer to them as Carbujectors
The other difference with FI is it will run no matter what angle the Sami is sitting at. Mine with the throttle body injector never even sputtered either when it was off camber or a front tire was 3 feet in the air!

Consider a diesel swap. I did the 1.6 non-turbo in my sami and it just idles over all kinds of stuff, with bigger tires you would deffinately want the 1.9 turbo motor if you can find one. Check out www.acmeadapters.com. BTW you can get tcase gears all the way down to like 6:1 and diff gears better than 5.13. You will do good to check out www.zuwharrie.com. They have great tech help, and a huge knowledge base. I've been wheeling samis since '96 and I've never rolled mine. I've only done about 4" max of lift though. With lockers f/r these things go just about anywhere. Have fun on the build.[/url]
SurferSami
09-14-2006, 02:32 PM
Concerning the fuel injection, the 1.6 8v has a trottle body injection and will run at different angles. It also meters the fuel better so if it is tuned right will give better perf/fuel mileage. The 1.6 16v has more power but tends to like higher rpms. You can get cams from calmini, petroworks and several other places that can make pwr/trq in the 2500 rpm range. The stock 1.3 doesn't max trq until 3800 and max pwr at 5400. These motors like to rev and they are pretty durable. I had two that went over 180000 miles with out rebuilds. That is what motorcycle companies do best, high rev engines.
The throttle body engine only requires low pressure for the injection, but the 16v engine wants more fuel pressure. Let me know when you are ready to wheel and maybe I can work out a trip to meet ya.

Fj 80 axles weigh more and really not neccesary. Youve seen me thrash on mine, It took almost a year of hard wheelin with 5.29s a 5.1 case and a locked front to finally blow a birf. They are so light its hard to get enuf traction to break them
How did u go about putting the frontend under. I can save u lots of trouble with steering issues.
Im hoping u didnt by from RRO. I hate to see anybody get the shaft.
And i get a kick out yall worryin bout the power of the 1.3. I can run 70-75mph on the road turing Q78(35.5x10.50) swampers. I drove it to tellico and averaged 16mpg even. And thats with a bone stock 160,000 mile 1.3
I dont know it all about zuks, so please dont take it that way. Its jus that all ive built in the last 8 years was zuks, so ive learned ALOT of stuff. Most of it the hard way.
Here are some pics of my junk.

Good luck

Yes i agree, that angle did look a little extreme. You could extend the frame a little or possibly move the front leaf connector up a few inches. Of coarse this will change drive shaft length etc. My Xterra could actually use a similar treatment because the rear shackles are at quite an angle as well.
Keep up the pace. moving right along.

ok, time to disspell some myths about the sami. one, the frame was setup to run goofy's in the back. those shackles were just to get it rolling. two, there really isn't a body to speak of. the rockers were boatsided and the top part of the body was welded to the frame so the seats are tied into the cage. and the third and biggest is that it's not the sami we started with. about a week into it, jason happened across this chassis and it was cheap so we ripped the drivetrain out of first one and are working the kinks out of this one. there's a few things about the cage i don't personally like but it is a tube cage and since it's so light jason and i could carry the frame, body, and cage off the trailer, i think it'll hold up pretty well. but as of today, it feels like it's gonna flex like mad and we'll probably have to limit the front quite a bit just to keep the steering alive. it should be a mean little buggy and should make it hard for jason to break stuff (knock on wood).

made some good progress today, Jarret almost has the power steering pump bracket done, got the majority of the interior done, did a little more electrical work, fitted the new grill, and did a little more paint work on the doors.

I really like it, right down to the Nintindo steering wheel. Just don't get mixed up and hook the left side button to the drivers side ejection seat.
You guys do good work. Can't wait to see this thing in person on the trail.

Oh you don't have to tell me that, I want to do it as part of my workout routine. I will have to rest a day ahead, and I just will not come in cold and try to squat it, I will have to do a series of warm up first.
