i got a 79 f150 that i am building a buggy out of....in the front it has coils...if i unbolt the coil mounts and move them down it should raise the truck about 3in....would i still need longer coils for better travel?

That's pretty common for a cheap lift, but doesn't give you any more flex. Do something similar on the rear with a shackle flip, but on the front get a set of "cage" brand progressive rate springs.

Thanks...where can i get my hands on the "cage " springs? ...and would i be better to go with the springs and leave the coil mounts where they are

For the rear get a set of spring hangers like the ones on the front of the rear springs. Does that make sense? Then flip the shackle over and use the new mounts. Tack weld them on and check for level. You want the shackle to point back 45 to 60 degrees with 90 degrees being straight down. It may take you a few attempts to get it right. The factory springs flex like crazy when you do this.
