what are those links from? Looks kinda like a link used on a bush hog deck with a tractor.

Are you doing a triangulated 4 link or using a trac bar?

project looks really good.

88yotapickup
01-02-2007, 12:06 AM
yes there from tractor supply my neighboor drake used them on his bronco there really strong and wont break which is why we used them and it will be some type of y link its hard to explain ill have to get drake to tell me to explain it sometime

BJack
01-02-2007, 10:41 AM
Top links aren't very strong. I would really think twice about using them.

HotRodYJ

Top links aren't very strong. I would really think twice about using them.

I have to agree 110% here. Very low quality on the heims joints on those links and they are not a standard fine thread so you cannot upgrade them to stronger ends. You don't want to skimp on suspenion or steering components, especially if you drive it on the street. A trail only rig, you might get away with trying them for a little while.

Hokie_YJ
01-02-2007, 07:25 PM
In my few years of experience around the farm I've seen more than a few broken top-links. I'd try to stay away from them. The links you need can be found all over the internet. Check Ballistic Fabrication, he has a website, and he sells on e-bay too.

Here is what I bought for the X.

http://www.spydercustoms.com/catalog/images/Imga0065.jpg

Poison Spyder Customs had the best price I could find on em. $29/joint. I used another vendor for the rod ends and Jam nuts. I bought the steel from Gub-Ni.

The best QA1 3/4 x5/8" joints...$22 each rated 40,500 lbs static

They sell full kits also with weld in bungs, jams, misalignment spacers, and ends all together for the best prices I've seen.

was thinking about cutting fenders like these in the front and working my bumper in with it just seeing what everyone thinks or if anyone else has ideas let me know im not set on an idea i just figure this will clear more room for flex and i wouldnt have to put as much lift and keep it lower

Thumpszilla
01-07-2007, 02:31 AM
I like it.

88yotapickup
01-07-2007, 02:42 AM
yeah and the tubing will keep the fender from cutting into my tire when flexing

Thumpszilla
01-07-2007, 02:50 AM
I thoght about something like that myself later on. Right now though I am fighting with other decisions like lift choices and designs and whether or not I want new gears and such.

Gordon
01-29-2007, 09:38 PM
:smokin: On the recovery gear. I'd mount the hi-lift on the inside of one of the bed rails, running front to back.

Can't really see in the pics - what kinda recovery points do you have on the rig?

We're working on a "Safe Recovery" checklist, and will be having a short familiarization when we get together for a springtime M & G. (not the one this weekend). Glad to see you're adding some gear.

88yotapickup
01-29-2007, 09:40 PM
i have d ring shackles in the rear and toyota stock hock on front

redplastic2p3t
01-29-2007, 11:40 PM
id put the high lift behind the seat, with the rest of the recovery gear so it doesnt get weathered and rust

88yotapickup
01-30-2007, 12:17 AM
i like the inside idea is there anyway to mount it on the cab behind the seats with some strong magnets and some type of mounting plate with out cutting holes in my cab sort of like this
http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h232/yota88/hiliftidea.jpg
its not the best but i tried it may not be practical just let me know i wont care and the one picture shows hilift from side and the others from the front with some type of mounts :?

NC_James
01-30-2007, 12:18 AM
I made a custom mount to my front bumper.

Bluegill
01-30-2007, 03:47 AM
The magnet idea might work, but you'd need some strong ones, like subwoofer magnets in order to hold it securely. The drawback is that it would be a bit of a strain to get it out of the cab.

Gordon
01-30-2007, 07:34 AM
I like the idea of either bolts or ratchet straps. I have used little "D" rings, bolted in place as attach points for straps or bungee cords in order to tie down.

Bluegill
01-30-2007, 07:58 AM
In the past I've used an old 6x9 speaker magnet to hold my 9mm under the dash within quick reach when driving thru downtown south-side Atlanta (or anywhere else that wasn't very safe)

88yotapickup
01-30-2007, 11:11 AM
where could i get magnets like that and should i also get another d-ring shackle thats not attached to my truck because the ones on the rear are tightened down so they wont come undone.

Pitch
01-30-2007, 04:51 PM
I have the billet aluminum high-lift mounts I machined to fit that cage if you want them $30.00. P.M. me or call me. They will fit the cage tube or the bed tube.

Hokie_YJ
01-30-2007, 07:12 PM
should i also get another d-ring shackle thats not attached to my truck because the ones on the rear are tightened down so they wont come undone.

I think it would be a good idea to have one or two loose incase you need to hook two straps together, or use a snatch block, etc.

I have two that stay on the front of the Jeep, and I have two more in the back with my recover gear.

88yotapickup
01-30-2007, 07:19 PM
ok whats a good size 3/4

TiredIronGRB
01-30-2007, 07:23 PM
I wouldn't use a D-ring to connect two straps, that's very dangerous, Just loop one through the other.

88yotapickup
01-30-2007, 07:25 PM
no i meeant to hook to my other d ring since my straps dont have hooks like have one in my tool box

Gordon
02-01-2007, 09:21 PM
You can do it. Just use new center bolts, if at all possible (just my opinion, here). I'd also clean 'em up with a wire brush at least where they pack together at the center bolt. I don't mean all the way out to the end of each leaf.

88yotapickup
02-01-2007, 09:35 PM
ok i was also thinking about painting them like i did my chevies and where can i get new center pins

pplblazerdude
02-01-2007, 09:40 PM
Paint them and the there is some stuff you can put between them that helps stop them from squeaking and also makes them flex better. Dont member what it is called though

Gordon
02-01-2007, 10:07 PM
Check the parts stores, or Spring Service. I wouldn't say that you have to change them, I just prefer to use new bolts, especially if there's some rust on the threads. If you can't find new ones easily, just wire brush real good with a power operated wire brush, not just a tooth brush type.

Paint's fine, too. I was mainly commenting on cleaning the rust and scale.

You may just want to cruise down to Spring Service and chat with them, or call them.

88yotapickup
02-01-2007, 10:09 PM
well adding 2 leafs i think the center pins would be to short

Jeep07
02-01-2007, 11:54 PM
ok i was also thinking about painting them like i did my chevies and where can i get new center pins

I made new pins from some grade 8 bolts just rounded off the bold head to fit the hole on the axle bracket and used a cutting disc to put a groove in the back so I could put a flat head screw driver in it to tighten the nut down. You might be able to do the same.

88yotapickup
02-01-2007, 11:55 PM

made progress on leaf springs todat got them cut and put together well almost i got some grade 8 allen head bolts but the nuts i got the thread completely was gone when i tightened them to the allen head bolts is this casue they were different kind?

Hokie_YJ
02-05-2007, 07:57 PM
Are you saying the threads are stripped out of the nut? It was probably a diferent thread. Just because bolts are the same dia. doesn't mean they are alike. There are fine thread, and coarse thread bolts.

88yotapickup
02-05-2007, 08:00 PM
yeah they just were gone after a few twists but then also the allen heads threads were fine i didnt know if the stripped casue they werent grade 8 and were weaker

Hokie_YJ
02-05-2007, 08:07 PM
Grade shouldn't have anything to do with it. They were either different threads, or you got them crossthreaded.

88yotapickup
02-05-2007, 08:08 PM
ok well i guess im getting new bolts

BJack
02-05-2007, 08:33 PM
Why don't you just go to Spring Service and ask them for some new center pins? They usually give them to me but I'm sure even if they charge you it wouldn't be much.

HotRodYJ
02-05-2007, 08:53 PM
Same here. I just stop by Advance or Autozone on my way home and pick up new center bolts if I need them. Couple bucks at the most right off the shelf. I've never had a need to make my own.

88yotapickup
02-05-2007, 09:09 PM
