How do you tell a 87 4.0 from a 94 4.0, and a non h.o from a h.o? Just got a 87 cherokee that should, i hope have, a 94 4.0 h.0 computer wiring and all in it. I would just like to know for sure, so when i need parts for it i know what im getting. Thanks for the help.

Ryan.

If you can get a P/N off the computer, I could check that for you - probably the best way to determine at least the electronic side of it.

The newer blocks don't have the temp & knock sensor ports under the manifold.

On the newer one's the temp sensor is in the thermostat water outlet, where as the older ones have no port in the water outlet.

Mine has a '95 long block, but I kept all the '89 electronics, so just a block number isn't going to tell the whole story. Mine also has a label on the front of the valve cover that has the year embedded in the code. You might see if that's there. If you can't see the year, post up that number and we'll see what we can figure out.

Wouldn't an '87 be a carb'd. 4.2?

An '87 should be a Renix FI 4.0 - with a throttle body and individual injectors.

See I was wrong, I can admit it. I was just basing that off that fact that the YJ's of that year were carb'd 4.2's.
