Anybody know where to check the fluid on an ax5?
What kind of Trans fluid does it use?

There is a check plug on the passenger side of the transmission. It takes a torx bit to remove, I think it is a T-55, maybe a bit smaller. Stick your finger in and check the level. It should be at or just below the bottom of the hole.
Use any good 85 or 90 weight GL-3 or GL-4 gear oil. Stay away from GL-5 as it can damage the syncros.

I had trouble finding a dino based gl4, everything we carried at work "Advance" was GL4 stuff. I went with the Redline MT90 full syn, it was the only one I found to be a gl4. Its a little pricey, but it doesnt take much for the ax15.

Ryan, if this is for your Jeep - please be sure it's an AX model first. They started using the NV3550 in 2000 on 6cyl models. The NV3550 takes syncromesh fluid, not gear oil.
The AX5/AX15 will have a large intermediate plate in the center of the transmission body, and a bellhousing that can be unbolted from the tranny. The NV3550 does not have the intermediate plate, and the bellhousing is cast together with the trans body.

Thanks for the heads up Rob... everything that I read online only mentioned the AX5 for my year. I"ll crawl under it and check it out before I do anything though.
What is the proccess for a NV3550? Should I have it.

Is your TJ a 4-banger or 6?

AX-5 is the tranny for a 4 banger, and the AX-15 is for the 6

Then your tranny is either an AX-15, or NV 3550. The AX-5 was only behind the 4-bangers.
