I am looking at replacing my trailer to one that is longer and wider. Is there any disadvantage to having a metal bed over wood?

Weight is about the only drawback.

I think metal generally weight less. It costs more though.

No way a full metal deck trailer weighs less than a wood deck, unless it's aluminum.

One small draw back that i see is that a metal deck will be pretty slick when it's wet and muddy. Just have to be careful not to bust your "hiney".

Full metal deck trailer wont flex as well traveling down the road giving it a rough feel behind the truck. Also, unless they are welded really well....they rattle like crazy.

Stay wood. Metal is to much extra weight.

Has anybody seen a trailer using that new synthetic rot proof wood?

Now that's a good idea. You mean the synthetic decking material, right?

It would probably be kinda expensive, but you shouldn't ever have to replace it.

the old inca in morristown use to make the stuff and was sending it to home depo for testing years ago
i worked at a machine shop that got a contract for a wash tank
after i built it we had to get a crane to lift it on to a semi trailer they wasnt expecting that should have seen them out there with 3 big fork trucks trying to lift this thing lol
walnut shells this stuff is made off (if we are talking about the same stuff) you had to drill it before you could anchor it down to anything
it is heavy duty stuff

That would be Trex. Be carefull it is non-structural. You must put it on a deck with 12" centers. They say no 16" is OK, but I'd be leary.

X2 Good stuff...but basically just ground up wood and some composite fillers. No real strength to it.
