Max Thomas came from CRAWL yesterday -- we had a good ride with just 1 rollover and few others that broke. So keep an eye out for us in March/April or May/June issue. If you want to join us next year -- we are requiring all vehicles to have rollcages and seatbelts.

Even a full bodied FJ80?

Will that be for any ride you are having down your way????

Sorry guys, as of right now ALL will have to have cages. You spend all your money on your rigs -- why not spend a little on yourself.
TiredIronGRB
12-16-2007, 09:31 PM
Don't need a cage in an 80 unless you roll it down a mountain or something. I can see it on a Jeep or FJ40...oh well.

If you ever ride this place you will be thankfull for a full roll cage, seat belts, rock sliders, tube fenders, and rear corner prtection. This place is hard on equipment. If you run a full body rig that is as nice as George's 80, I wouldnt dare go thru 80% of what they have to offer. My jeep was semi nice and straight. Now after about 5 visits there it is beat and banged up pretty good and i havent rolled there YET.

I've seen a lot of it on video, and there looks to be plenty that can be done without rolling. My 80 has been on a few trails and isn't afraid of body damage (it has plenty).

I think your 80 would be fine down there even if it did role.
I know a few parks that recommend role cages etc for certain obstacles but the waivers don't require them.

How about a compromise of a roll bar?

I wish my axles would have showed up so I could have made it saturday. Can't wait to see the pics. This place will give you body damage. My cherokee doesn't have a straight panel on it now. I even lost a window. There are plenty of places to roll. Especially if they have cut some of the new trails we talked about. We did go on a dry day. You would need a parts truck to go on a rainy or snowy day.
I think the cage and belt rule is fair. After all it is a Privately owned park. The don't have to let anyone ride the place if they don't want to. I can see where full body rigs would question it. But look at Chris's cherokee that rolled in the street. No cage and he was very lucky to make it out not hurt.

I can see both sides of the story. There realy is no place were you could have a multiple roll accident except for one hill. Ive turned sideways at the top of this hill and, thank God, it was wet. I slid to the bottom completley sideways and come a hair of flipping it over. If it would have been dry that day, there is no question it would have rolled 2 to 3 times.
Jeff is just trying to protect himself from a lawsuit as much as possible. The seatbelt?/cage requirement doesnt completley deter this but it does help in my opinion. as far as a full bodied rig, i see no need for a full cage but a seatbelt would be mandatory. Maybe a compromise can be had.
again, i honestly dont think he is trying to make anyone mad. and i believe most if not all here would not hold the land owners responsible for their misfortune. The pics do not do this place justice. It is an awsome, hardcore place to ride.

I not trying to be hard on anyone. We're just trying to help prevent injury just in case of an unfortunate mishap -- no one plans on rolling(well maybe a few), but it can happen -- it's better to be safe than sorry.
With a couple hundred bucks of steel you can build a nice cage. If you dont have the equipment or fab. skills talk to Teds Off Road, I'm sure he'd be glad to help you out. When my brother and I started with the Cherokees, that was one of the first mods we done to ours, along with 5-points -- they look cool and make you feel a whole lot safer. We just want to keep everyone alive and safe so that you can keep coming back and we can keep this place open to ride.

As a landowner where people wheel (and roll) I completely understand
As for the cage, there's a big difference between a Cherokee and an FJ80 in the way they are constructed. I've seen several rolled 80s and all of them fared pretty well.

Crozet where I wheel most of the time has the trail labeled and the requirements for each trail.
Here is a copy of the rating
What are the minimum vehicle requirements?

- Hi-lift jack or a jack capable of lifting your tire off the ground
- Tow strap (hooks type straps are not permitted)
- Tow points front and rear of vehicle
- A CB
- First-aid kit
- Rocker protection and skid plates recommended
Middle\Upper blues with (optional) low black bypasses
- 33" tires
- Hi-lift jack or a jack capable of lifting your tire off the ground
- Tow strap (hooks type straps are not permitted)
- Tow points front and rear of vehicle
- A CB
- First-aid kit
- Rocker protection and skid plates recommended
Low Blacks
- 35" tires
- Front and rear lockers
- Hi-lift jack or a jack capable of lifting your tire off the ground
- Tow strap (hooks type straps are not permitted)

Note: Body and/or drive train damage is likely

- A total disregard for body damage
- Helmets recommended
- A trailer to tow your rig home

Just a thought. I also know that a cherokee rely's on its entire body for strength and structural integrity, once that is compromised it will fold. So once you put a dent in a b pillar that will no longer hold the weight originally designed.

Does the stock so-called "cage" on a YJ count? I do plan for mine to get the cage treatment early next year though.

Is there any other cherokee?
Just kidding. My point is once you lose structural integrity of the body it will not hold up to a roll. Not that it will fold like a taco. I've seen many a cherokee take a roll and held up fine, but without the shape of hte pillars holding it if it rolled again it would collapse. My buddy barrel rolled his three times in the field at his house goofing off. Figure 8's at 50mph. It holds all the glass and leaks a little, but he is careful on a trail. We are working of a body swap, caged full on rock crawler.
I would say the same would go for any vehicle, I'm just saying the one I have with first hand knowledge.

No, you need a front hoop and tie it together.

I just now looked at the photos and remember the trail ratings. I think Mine will be able to do all but the last one, but I am going to do a lot more testing before then. URE is the best place for testing in my opionion. not to hard not to far from an access road, but still able to test the rigs ablities to a good degree.
Just a side note. I am a safety nut. So I rather be safe than sorry. I would rather have the extra protection than none, but at the same point if you are a good drive and know your rig well you should have many problems.

That's what I figured. And I understand too, I don't trust the stock one at all really. Hopefully I can get down that way next year after the cage is done.

The stock center hoop of the cage is pretty strong. It is think and heavy. Just not sure what it is made of. Problem I see with it is triangulation.

Well that is what the rest of my cage is made from. Except that the main hoop and back legs are bigger than 2" od and the rest is 1.75"

Thanks again Jeff for letting us wheel your land. I think a roll cage safety thread needs to be formed to discuss it. This thing will be 10 pages long.

Speaking as an individual, and I would hope everyone else, I personally appreciate all access to any private land for enjoyment of our sport, and fully support any owner's requests for certain restrictions in doing so.

Say, it just dawned on me - do you know Rex Seals? He lives on Chinquipin Rd & works with me at Lear. There's a bunch of Hancock county folks who work with me, but I remembered that Rex lives on that road.
