I think we need to put together a night run this coming weekend..no idea where but i think it would be fun..any ideas?..

EDIT:
Stony, then possibly Dennis Cove -

6pm at Food City in Elizabethton for those interested.

sure...im just down to do a night run, as long as someone up front knows the trail pretty good i think it would be a blast
Raines did you see the Shackles in the for sale?

Im up for a night run, and do suggest Stoney, but ONLY the bottom half. There is NO WAY that you will get me to run pinto ridge, or ford hill after dark. (especially after watching the video of tjrockcrawler on pinto!!!!!). We could run the bottom half, and back, and back again to make it interesting.

Me personally, I feel comfortable with doing a full stoney run at night; however a run on the lower portion would be just as fun. Maybe even, up to ford hill and back down to the trail head. How about 6pm at Food City in Elizabethton for those interested.

how dificult is stoney??? i would like to go in my kj but have never seen the trail.

Is your KJ skidded?? You could do the section were gonna do in your KJ. You may bottom out in a couple of places, but you will be fine. I have a recovery strap and a heavy foot on the skinny if you get in trouble.

Beware Pinto Hill if you have a stock rig. I'd recommend catching a daytime ride for your first time up Lil Stoney. With good spotting (and maybe a strap tug) you can make it up Pinto okay, but I have seen a stock XJ's exhaust get twisted into a pretzel on that part of the trail. Other than that, a good driver can take a capable stock Jeep like yours thru Stoney.

You could probably do it with the Libby just fine, although Pinto and Ford might be a bit difficult for a stock vehicle, and Dodge would be no-go.

Stony has hanging laurels, so trail rash is fairly certain, and a night ride is going against you, also.

It would be my personal recommendation that you ride with someone, if you don't want to risk some possible damage, even if you don't go past Pinto Hill, at least for this first time night ride.

Should you guys end up at Dennis Cove, you should have no problems with the Libby. Big Rock would be the only spot, and if you come up it on the right line, you'd be fine. Not as many low hanging branches, either.

I definately agree with Rob and Gordon on this one. Your stock LIBBY is capable, afterall it is a jeep, but you may want to scope out the trail first. If greenrover isn't able to make it, I'll have an open seat if you want it.

I called the Unicoi ranger station and inquired if there are restrictions with using public FS roads after dark. I specifically asked about Stoney Creek and Dennis Cove. The ranger I spoke with confirmed that there was no limitation on time of use as long as the road was open. He did tell me that all motor vehicle traffic must be with registered and tagged vehicles.

im not to worried about trail rash really i do plane to take it off road after all. the only thing im really worried about is my rear diff. i do have skids though. since its a night run and due to the rain today i guess i might be doing a ride along, but its still more fun to drive. i really just dont want to hold everyone up in the dark if i do get stuck. count me in though and thanks for the honest advice everyone.

You will be fine with the lower half. There may be one or two spots that would give you some challenge, but on the bottom half, you should be good.

Wow,sounds like fun,we may be up to it...........I say we go to the top via
dodge hill and turn around and come down ford

hehehe we love night runs and do them all the time.

I agree with phil....extra front lights etc are a real pain for the person in front of said vehicle.

I gotta fix the wifes TPS saturday,I'll call gordon and let him know.

So we'll go up and turn around at pinto hill come back out and head to dennis cove..........what are we looking at maybe 4-5hours?

Then I?m in if it stops raining that is I still have street tires. But I plane on going either way.

There was a certain F-150 that did lil stoney, even the rougher sections all the way on BALD maypops. He did change a flat, and pump one tire up again at the top....But he made it through, and rather fashionable I might add.

tjrockcrawler
11-15-2007, 11:41 AM
Of course that F-150 did have a longer WB and I'm sure that helped some too.

I'd luv to go but can't, i gotta put rear brakes on mine plus the emergency brake cable, kind of forgot about that :P but if anyone is hauling thier rig and needs a place to unload i live just a short hop to little stoney maybe 2 miles ......Mostly two lane roads with a very short hop on the 4 lane. Got plenty of room to park 12 acres, so if needed just holler!

I am serisouly considering this run. I haven't driven my CJ since the last run, and I noticed a small coolant leak, so I need to check that out Saturday. I'll try to let you know Saturday about noon.

I'm also thinking about letting my wife drive this one. Lisa (Mamaturtle) is her hero, and now she has been asking if we could afford another Jeep for her. I think I want her to drive something first to be sure she really wants to do it. Of course, if she really likes it then the pressure will really be on me to find something.

TRAIL REPORT:

Great evening of wheeling. tjrockcrawler and myself arrived at food city at 6, and everone else arrived shortly afterwards except Jazzman, who met up with us at the trailhead. After some great conversation, we hit Lil Stoney at around 7pm. Was a great ride, and the trail was actually a lil damp for a change. Pretty much everything went off without a hitch on the way in, and the only carnage to speak of was a busted roof rack, and my broken shock mount on the way out. After taking a few moments to unbolt my shock, giving my TJ a cadillac like ride, we headed back out to the trailhead. We stopped at the gas station on the way up to dennis cove for a bathroom break and a quick snack, and then off to Dennis Cove. We hit the trail, going left at the gun range. The back side of that trail has become a bit rougher than what it used to be, but was much fun. Everyone made it up Big rock with no problems, and back out to the trailhead we went. I have to give much props to 03CactusGreenKJ, as his liberty did awesome at lil stoney, and mucho props to AMsting and his wife for running with only soft half doors and a bikini top (IT WAS COLD!!!). Thanks to everyone for their patience, as this was tjrockcrawler, and my first time at leading a Grace ride.

Well, It was a good ride. A few things everyone needs too work on as grace members.... One is organization, this could have been done alittle better and the lead man needs too keep better watch for the road sign the next time  And some of it was just mmmmmm,

ALSO GRACE MEMBERS PLEASE PICK UP TRASH IF YOU SEE IT ON THE TRAIL. EVERYONE PASSED OVER HUGE BOXES, SODA CANS, AND ALOT MORE THINGS.

It is our part too represent the group in a positive way, so please if you see any trash on a trail that is noticable, just pick it up and throw it in your car. We filled up the back of the izuzu with trash that was missed by most of the people in front of us.

I liked the fellowship, wheeling was okay. Thanks all who came 8)

Fellowship was really enjoyable. Spencer was like come on are we stopping again.. lol She wanted too hit some good rocks... I guess she is more hardcore than I am!

I just thought I would add something.......In judging the quality of a ride, I like to use these objective questions:

Did we meet on time? YES, except one person who caught up.
Did we have a plan? YES
Was there a competent leader? YES
Did we give thanks to God for the opportunity? YES
Was there good fellowship? YES
Was the ride challenging? YES, espeially at some times and in the dark. Also, people intentionally chose NOT to play due to the added risk of nightime visibility.
Did anyone break down? NO, just a lost shock mount.
Did anyone get hurt? NO
Did we appreciate the different vehicle capabilities? YES
Did we help introduce a new person to the sport? YES
Did everyone behave himself/herself? YES
Did everyone get home safely? YES

Aaron, thanks for coordinating and leading. Raines, everything looks different in the dark. Don't worry about missing a turn.

Looking forward to next time!

Well, It was a good ride. A few things everyone needs too work on as grace members.... One is organization, this could have been done alittle better and the lead man needs too keep better watch for the road sign the next time

Yeah, I missed the road sign, lol, I'll own up to that. Good thing it wasn't really that big of a deal since we all had a good time. It was nice to meet you James, I hope we get a change to wheel again.

Dollar General did get a parade.

I got the coolant tank pulled back off today to find yet a new crack...so now the WHOLE tank is getting a nice new jb weld coat to get me by till thursday or so. but as far as last night went I had a great time and met yet more of the family, wasnt too cold, wasnt too rough, as far as I see it it was a perfect run...adurbin's shock aside but that was pretty minor. hope all enjoyed as we did!

My wife and I had a great time. She drove Stoney, her first off road drive, and at night too! She did well. She said it was a lot different driving than she thought it would be. Even with a short wheelbase, you can't cut corners tightly on some of those turns. She was nervous, but by the end she was wheelin'. She spent the rest of the night talking about how she should have her own vehicle.

It was my first time on Dennis. I want to do a day run now, because I think it must have gorgeous views. It was great at night with all the stars out. I also want to run up the hill we went down.

I made a trip to the car wash yesterday to get that stinky mud off. It starts smelling again when you wash it off.

Good news, Matt in the stock YJ had to turn around at the beginning of the ride due to a broken tranny mount. He got it fixed Sunday and is ready to go.

I figured it wouldn't take her long. Julie had the same reaction after I let her have the wheel a couple times.........as a result I gave my DD to her, but gained a new wheeling pal. 8)

Yes, but that is her Baby. The first scratch on the trail would be cause for great anguish. She wants something she doesn't want to care about. Although she has talked about lifting her DD "a little", just so it looks better. Either way, I have a lot of work ahead of me.
