I know it's a few weeks out, but before you know it, gates will close for the winter.

Any interest in hitting Paint on the 10th? The Shad Road trail?

For those who have not done this trail before, it will take most all day. If we leave the trailhead across from the camp/picnic area at 10:00, we should be back there by 4:00 or so.

If I'm off work, you betcha! By "Shad Road", do you mean 422? If so, I do want to hit that one hole where Sam's J-10 gave up reverse gear. Couldn't get through it with the TJ last time without lockers. With bigger more aggressive meats, lincoln locked rear, and more torque (FSJ) - let's find out!

Yup, the usual run. Plus a little more if we have time.

Cool! Maybe I can get Vince to tag along too, he knows the area even better than me. Not to mention he always puts on an enjoyable show.

Form the specs in your signature, you'll be fine. Stock rigs can make it through trail 422 at Paint Creek, there are bypasses for the hard stuff.

You need to wheel with Vince (dino1967) sometime Ryan - he'll have you scratching your head at where he takes that stock Yota. 8) But the truck does get body damage. The only times he couldn't follow my TJ was when his AT tires couldn't get enough grip in the mud.

Is the meeting place on Rollins Chapel Road?

Actually, you'll turn left on to Lower Paint off of Rollins Chapel. We meet at the intersection of Lower Paint & Hurricane Gap.

For everyone who hasn't been here before - I could perhaps pull off along the Asheville Hwy (70) before the turn onto Rollins Chapel and let you follow me in. If we do something like this, I'd need to know who would be meeting me, so we can account for everyone.

Post up thoughts throughout today, and we can finalize a plan this evening and name an exact meeting location.

Great day at Paint Creek today!

Gathered at the parking lot at 10:00 with brisk weather at hand. The crew consisted of myself, 1-tonmudder, greenrover & friend, rghyland with wife and son, and tjrockcrawler. Steve was the only brave one to run with no doors. After the blessing, we headed on out 31 and turned on to 422A. We stopped at the first little hill climb on the left. Was so dry it wasn't too awful challenging.

On to the top - Vince's field on the right was dry as a bone, as were the two big mud holes - well almost empty. Steve walked the 1-ton right up it, twice. Richard was brave but couldn't quite get up the shear wall. After his first try, including about 12" of front axle air, his wife & son bailed on him. By then the wall was slick from the little bit of mud in the bottom, and Richard's Rubi couldn't quite get enough traction to break over the top. The rest of us took the bypass.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/gme1951/Paint%20Creek%2011-10-07/z11-10-07PaintCreek002.jpg

The rest of the trip around to the big field up top, and on to the tower proved uneventful, yet beautiful. We saw a handful of turkey walking around, and based upon digging in the leaves, there appeared to be plenty of them in the area.

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g125/gme1951/Paint%20Creek%2011-10-07/z11-10-07PaintCreek006-7.jpg

We spent a little time at the tower, and as we were getting ready to leave, Alex and Brad met up with us. We were going to scout out Viking Mountain, but got side tracked - Steve can explain that one.

Called it a day around 4:00 pm. We had a great day of fellowship and wheeling - blessed indeed.

Hopefully I can meet you guys in the beginning of the next ride.....sorry about not headin on up to Viking as well, Alex was going on some sort of adventure and I had to get my girlfriend on to her house shortly, I'm glad you guys had a great time. Oh yeah, I meant to ask while everyone was there, but only two of you guys tried the "tank trap"(big mud hole with the huge wall)? It keeps getting less impressive every time I head up to paint creek.

Today was a blast! I am so thankful that I have the opportunity to enjoy God's creation. This was my first trip to Paint Creek. I was hoping for a little more play time and less riding, but every trail is different. It was awesome none the less.

Some pics from the fire tower....I believe the elev. was around 3600'...it felt like it....brrrr

When I got the Blazer it was a diesel.I needed a tank for a FI blazer which I got off you(clint). The only pump/pickup assembly I had was for a Suburban and it was about an inch too long.I cut it down and used it just to get me by.

Well two years later I really need to figure out if it's the sending unit or the gauge. The gauge is a diesel gauge still and the Blazer was originally a 24 volt system so I dont know if that has anything to do with it or not.

Thought I had enough but I didnt.Definately not one of my finer moments.

pplblazerdude
11-11-2007, 12:07 AM
ahh nice nice nice. Those are always the best times. I had to lengthen one one time and it gave me a 5 gallon reserve of fuel. You could try another gauge as I am sure you have one laying around. I think I have a extra sending unit if you need one.

Yeah tank trap is a mean hole when it is full. The hole at the top of it is what finished off reverse in the truck.
