View Full Version : Project SAMI-TRUCK

SamuraiGuyTN
09-12-2007, 12:12 AM
OK looks like the new project just started. My plans are to turn the samurai into what the title says......a truck.

The Plans:
1. yota axles...5.29 gears..locked front...Spooled rear
2. body shortened......rear moved to behind the Targa Bar
tube bars added to form some sorta flat bedish thing (still to be decided)
3. Suspension...front .....3 linked with pan hard bar
rear.......4 link
4. tires...I guess it looks like 36's
5. Fuel Cell...for uh um well fuel

This project is still in the infancy stage. Right now my concerns are centered around the axles getting the TLC they need.

what tcase gears are you running now?

SamuraiGuyTN

I can't wait to see this build started. I'm thinking of cutting mine before I paint, and the stretching the WB as far as possible without having to tube it.

Gonna use hiems of JJ's? When are you starting? Gonna come to the M&G? Should be a cool build.

SamuraiGuyTN

the actual build should start after the M&G. Won't be able to start alot until after my jet training.

Something else to the list I forgot to add....Twin Sticks for my T-case...

Which I ordered tooooddddaayyyy. 2 wheel and four wheel and low high range seperate. How nice that is gonna be. :smokin:

SamuraiGuyTN
09-17-2007, 12:04 AM
Finally got some H1 rims...they are 8 bolts....and they are coming with Orings.

I think I lucked out. 250 shipped. I'll have to buy new centers and have some one local do the job. I know it was talked about before... BUt who should I go too Local?

I was looking at Copperhead Fab's wheel; centers. Some of them look really good. HAs anyone ordered their centers yet and are the bolt wholes tapered in for easy alignment?

BillM
09-17-2007, 08:22 AM
Steve Epperson in Church Hill for the recenter job.

Copperheads centers do not have tappered lug nut holes. Great Lake Offroad 's do. But he only has 2 types of center. The 5 hole design and solid.

SamuraiGuyTN
09-17-2007, 03:10 PM
I have Tires  they are huge.. and pretty much brand new. still have almost all the nipples on the side.

SamuraiGuyTN
09-19-2007, 02:37 PM
List of things I just ordered.....

5.29 gears

diff gear install kit

4 bolt high steer kit

knuckle rebuild kit

Diff stud eliminator kit

flange nuts

rear spool.

Im getting new wheel centers here soon along with a lighter bead lock inserts.

BillM
09-19-2007, 03:14 PM
Where did you get your centers from?

SamuraiGuyTN
09-19-2007, 03:23 PM
Im gonna have insane04 get them from USA 6x6. we arent gonna order them if they aren't instock and gonna be shipped right away.

BillM

SamuraiGuyTN
09-19-2007, 04:00 PM
all I can say is that after looking at my new tires against my x's.....My sami is gonna be huge. I was really wanting to run 37's or 38's but I think 36's will do just fine. and with teh 5.29's that I am throughing in. I'll have more then enough gears to crawl and be able to use my 5th gear on the road.

Yeah buddy! Here's a guy off of VA4x4 and his rigs. The left one is on 33s and the right one is on 36s for comparison:

SamuraiGuyTN

the one with 33's almost looks stock.....compaired to the one with 36's. I think Suzuki could have put that samurai on the market with 33's and it would have passed as normal. mine is gonna have the front looking unchanged as much as possible, the rear is what is going to be different.

SamuraiGuyTN
09-28-2007, 09:47 AM
Alright stuff that I have and stuff thats should be here in the next day or two.

Have:

Axles

swampers

h1 rims

coming:

twin sticks......should be here today

5.29 gears

diff gear install kit

4 bolt high steer kit...( 4 bolts were outta stock, Upgraded to 6bolts for no charge and the Cost of knuckles.)

knuckle rebuild kit

Diff stud eliminator kit

flange nuts

rear spool. Should all be coming in the next day or so.

Looks like I wil have all new axles for the exception of knuckles (which I still need) and the housing them selves.

SamuraiGuyTN
10-16-2007, 04:45 PM
Every thing on the list I now Have. I also have the 6 shooter knuckles. I ended up getting a great deal on them. SO I went ahead and bought them. I now have everything for the axles. Next step is to get them cleaned up and all the new parts added.

SamuraiGuyTN
10-17-2007, 11:55 PM
Today I went ahead and ordered my rock rings and centers from copperhead fab. here are the links to what I got. Hope all approve. cause its gonna look mean.

the rings and centers are here. they have been for a few weeks I just haven't been freed up enough to do anything with them. I alos went ahead and ordered some Warn hubs. They arrived this morning. They are so shiny.

I have torn apart the rear axle. and cut off all the excess metal. I went ahead and painted it black to prevent rust. The Third is out and I have the gears and new bearings in place. But nothing is officially tightened up. The spool is super beefy.

My next part of the prject is to start the front axle tear down and clean up. Which will have to be down fast for my free time is running short. I'll try and get pictures up here soon.

SamuraiGuyTN
11-14-2007, 10:38 AM
oh yeah I have decided to hang onto my run flats for now. I know they are heavy, But they will help keep two things low. My CG and my cost.

SamuraiGuyTN
11-19-2007, 11:52 PM
Alright I have a couple of rod ends heading my way for the Link set ups and a rear disc break kit from all pro is coming. Now I have decided to change my mind about the coils. I wanna make things a little easier on the spring and shock setup. So I have decided to go with Air shocks instead. I know they are expencive but they will save time on fabbing up other mounts, plus the cool factor will go up.

So the big question for every one is what brand and what size. I figure with the sami I can run the 2" diameter shocks. I hear the 14" shocks are a good shock that would provide alot of suspension travel. But I have seen pictures where guys have run 16's with alot of success. OR a mixture of the two. Run 14's up front and 16's in the rear. Give me some feed back on what you think......Especially you guys that have fooled with them before or know some one that has....

SamuraiGuyTN
11-28-2007, 09:55 AM
Last night I heared a truck pull up. It was the UPS guy with a couple of goodies for me. Two things came in at the same time. All of my heim joints, rod ends, jam nuts and misalignment spacers came in one box. Then from all pro came my rear disc brake kit. So now All I am waiting on is the air shocks. I belive my wife's camera is lying around, so I'll see if I can't get some pictures of my progress....

SamuraiGuyTN
11-30-2007, 04:36 PM
Well I just spoke with a guy about my race runner shocks. at first I was emailed saying that the 14's and 16's were sold out. Then today he mentioned that they had 4 14" shocks in. I said I would take them. SO the rear is also gonna hae 14's instead of 16's. WHich I don't really see as a big deal. I figure it will flex just the same. SO hopefully they will get here before I leave next week...

I went and cut off the old drum break Setup on oe axle and then started the mock up for the disc brake. I'll try and finish that today when I get a chance. Maybe even both sides. Then I will finish with the 3rd member. If all goes well I will put the rear axle together sometime soon. Then I can focus on the front.

I'll just have to tell people I have a bird stuck in the back some place with all the chirping. I hear that you really have to have the tires aired up though when you drive it on the street, b/c by having to much traction in a turn like that you can break an axle......Well I guess you could if you had a bigger engine then what I have you could..

Oh I don't think I mentioned...but my air shocks are on their way...

I love my spool. Very predictable. In fact it can be argued that it is easier on axles do to steady loading versus the jerk loading you get with a locker. I have not seen any data on either so I don't know for sure.

If you break an axle turning on the street you'll break them all day on the trial. I run 18 psi in the tsl's on the street. Granted it's not a dd but still. Don't know the strength first hand of the yota axles but I understand they are strong. A tire will slip first on the street. I have never heard of somebody breaking an axle on the street due to a spool.

If your rear pinion is going to be high you might consider on of these inspection/fill kits so you can get a good amount of fluid in there easily.

SamuraiGuyTN
01-13-2008, 10:34 PM
hmm I may look into that. right now i have just been using a hand pump and a long tube to add fluid. But it gets messy if the tube falls out and its a pain to keep from dripping every where.

Jeep07
01-13-2008, 10:41 PM
If you rotate the pinion pretty high you will want to fill higher than the fill plug on the yota axle so this will make it easy. :)

ahh I see. Yeah that makes since. I'll talk with Drake about that Tomorrow.

SamuraiGuyTN

You know I could probably call my samurai "Samiyota"

and seeing as its got locked yota axles, does that mean I can get some TRD stickers for it. I do have a Tacoma that I will be towing it with and my wife has a TRD Tundra. So I think I have more then enough Yota's to make up for the fact the Sami is well...a sami.

I'd Think I have the perfect spot for the Sticker

10-10-2008, 07:52 AM
Ok I'm sure you guys already know just from the forsale section, but the next stage of sami has begon. I will be (er Drake and steve will be) dropping in the propane powerd engine tranny and tcase(4.7 gears) into the sami from the toyota. The front axle is gonna be move forward some for better approach angle. The seats are gonna be attached to the cage for safety. with the front being moved forward, its going to a four link and the rear lower links are being shortened some.

Nothing really to take pictures of when I was last there. The sami drive train was gone and on the floor. with the exception of the engine, I think that is breithing new life in another sami some place else.

I do know that Pitch was fitting the yota engine into the bay to check for fitmant. Will have to check with him on what has actually been done. I'll have to bug Steve for Pics. I would have taken some with my phone if I had thought about it.

10-27-2008, 12:21 PM
Updates, updates, updates, you guys have nothing better to do? The radiator has to be moved to rear due the fact that the engine accessories now occupy that space, the floor pan has to be removed and a new tunnel fabricated to accomodate the tranny and the tcase will use up some space under the passenger seat. If I sit the engine down far enough to clear the hood it hits the axle so a few hood modifications are in order. We'll see how it goes.

After looking at the longer wheel base its apparent that larger tires are needed. ahhhhh is it ever over. 2 things I want for it now..... ok 3 things......40" tires, air bumps, and a doubler. But i guess I would need longfields too.

Guess Im gonna have to hang with the 36's and get rubber bumps....

true.... Any body got a ... ... rim expander.

grinder and a welder. Amen Cycles (in Rogersville) did it on a spoked motorcycle rim on Biker Build-off. They had something like a 21" rim and needed a 22". Couldn't get one in time so they cut apart the smaller rim they did have and gave it another inch. Pretty cool, but I wouldn't recommend it.

well the other week I was at TD for seat placement, drake needed a jack that was holding the rear of the sami/yota/buggy up. SO naturally he lowered it down and while we were at it, we lowered the front down as well. Gave it a killer stance. So we are keeping the body low and the new wheel base is right at 102". Probably won't ride any higher then it was when it was on 31's, maybe 33's. So Drake is gonna raise the rear top shock mounts for the same amount of travel. Also some rubber bump stops are gonna be added until I can afford air bumps. The floor pan is gonna be finished soon as well as the passanger seat.

So what does that leave? well the radiator still needs to be moved to the rear along with the final mounts for the pane tanks. Along with what ever plumbing that intells. the front is the biggest thing left. Fender trimming, shock placement, links, bumper (well what ever kind that really can be used...) any other tubing.......and what ever else I am missing.

Can't wait to take it wheeling....

My steering cylinder came in today, and my twin stick setup from Trail gear is on its way.

SamuraiGuyTN
09-11-2009, 10:51 PM
I ordered some new rod ends from QS Components, and they came in the other day. very good company by the way. Luckily they can be used on my steering ram as well, so I should have some extras for spairs just incase. I installed the 5 point harnesses today as well. I didn't reallize how long the sholder straps were going to be. Sometime in the spring I had bought a CB antenna and finally installed them on the back of the sami. Im so glad the CB still works after sitting in the sami for the last year at Drake's.

Next on the aggenda is to replace the clutch master cylinder on Monday. The old one apparently has Seezed up some how. Once Drake returns next week, we'll finish with the steering and hopefully plumb the radiator. Tie up some few loose ends and try to go wheeling.

http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i278/samuraiguytn/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG00135-20090916-1326.jpg The arms were kind of in the way of the shifter so I used my 6 ton press and bent them some. Now there is plenty of room to shift all 3 levers.

OK well I know I haven't been able to update, much less work on her, But I am starting up again on both. Over the last few days I worked on getting the radiator plumbed and sorta came up with something. I'll elaborate here when I get some pictures up. I also am getting ready to plumb the hydraulics for the sami as well replace the hydraulic clutch assembly with a newer master and slave cylinder. I think once that is all done, I can take the sami to a muffler shop and get it quieted. I am gonna go for no sound this time around. WIth the Propane, it shouldn't be to hard.

SamuraiGuyTN
01-07-2010, 09:18 PM
Well once I get the clutch system finished, Im moving on to the hydraulic steering. Most of the steering components are in place. What I have left is to put the resevior in a fixed place and set up all the hoses. The next step is to get an exhaust system. Once I complete those details, I am going to clean up some other loose ends and hopefully take her out for a trail ride. I relize some of this is redundant, just wanted to keep my to do list active.

SamuraiGuyTN

Worked on some clutch issues tonight. Found that I needed to adjust the rod length between the master cylinder and the clutch petal. Now I can change gears while the engine is running. I also went and relocated the celenoid for the winch to my frame rail just behind the radiator. I figure its in a good place, but we shall see.

So i decided to load her on the trailer just for fun.

Liquid feed is good.

Jeep07
01-15-2010, 10:28 AM
On propane systems like ours the evaporation from boiling liquid to gas happens in the regulator. The forklift tanks have a pickup tube that runs to the bottom corner of the tank. If you mount them sideways you have to pay attention to which side is up/down. (There is a hole in the collar that should go down which corresponds with the curve in the end of the pickup tube)

People that don't use forklift tanks in buggies have to mount their BBQ tanks upside down so the liquid feeds out of the tank into the regulator.

All the hoses in a propane system have to be high pressure hoses except for the one from the regulator to the mixer/carb.

Robert don't you work for a company that does LP conversion on fleet cars etc? It sounds like you all use a different system which is interesting and requires less parts?

The 3 parts in the forklift style systems are the lock-off, regulator and the mixer.

SamuraiGuyTN
01-15-2010, 10:28 PM
