derrick you didnt get the 7100s or fox 2.0 shocks? your going to regret that...those OME (same ones i have) are only 1 inch longer than a stock shock. that def. will be your limiting factor on your flex. that RTE is really a great kit, thats the only reason i suggest getting the best shocks you can. where do you plan on working sunday? i wouldnt mind helping you put all those goodies on.

Ahh totally agree with richard on this. Maybe the DI suspension deals with those shocks better. But if not I would look into another set of shocks. I also would look into those long travel mounts. I really like them.

acutally its worse. however more options are out there over the d2. you could get lowered shock mounts in the rear from rovers north or EE(best), heck you could even go with a set of long travel rancho 9000s rather than the OME shocks. btw, with that set up, your going to want to have the rear A arm extension block from RTE.

whoa whoa whoa.........ive done ALL my homework guys!!!!

I spent hours on the phone with a guy name John at Rovertym and he suggested to take steps. Yeah I wanted 7100's but thats another 750 bucks. Everyone knows a 4x4 is always a work-in-progress. This is only stage one. Once I sell my other truck the money from it will fund stage two.

Bilstein 7100s are in the future though!!!!!, but if you want to buy them for me I'll gladly put them on now....ha!

I thought that but i was told by the RTE guy that I'll be fine. You haven't mentioned a new rear U-Joint style driveshaft yet. RTE is super helpful so my plans are to trail test to see what other mods I need.....Richard maybe we can run over bays to test the truck out.

Those tires look huge for 33s  The control arms look mucho stout :!:

they look good ..... well i held the yard stick to them and they measure about 32inches ... by eye balling it i dont think ill have to do much trimming if any at all.

my stock springs have 120000 miles on them so i might get about 4 inches of lift from the height i have now.

but who's counting inches anyways

youll at least get 3.5 out of the RTE lift, and i bet it comes out to about 3.75, that seems where they settle. im not so jealous...yet...just watch your back once you get a RTE front bumper/sliders/rear bumper

today (sunday) i worked on my truck a little bit but had to stop because of rain.

i got the front finished. i started on the rear and its about 80% easier, which is what i assumed.

i got the passenger side rear about finished and then ill move to the driver side rear to finish it.

heres some progress pictures......i LOVE it

yeah im pretty happy with the results so far. its been a slow process. 120000 miles of wear on stuff has made disassemble very time consuming.

ive gained 4 inches from the new springs....

i measured the old tires at 27 inches and the new tires measure out to 32 inces.....so...

add 4 inches of lift plus 2.5 inches from new tires equals 6.5 inches (roughly) of new clearance......SWEET

depending on the weather i should be done with it tomorrow.

Derrickalda
03-05-2006, 11:59 PM
for the land rover guys out there.....the new wheels with 4.5 inch backspacing worked perfect.

no rub on the radius arms. ill trim the front bumper a little and that will be it.

haven't finished the rear yet but if i did my homework right i should have plenty of clearance there too.

33s are in the works, maybe by the end of april for the safari, we'll see. as for wheels, i perfer the stock land rover alloys, considering the bead grove is MUCH larger than any aftermarket rover steel wheel, but, those steelies look great. derrick, how about you finish the rover and go to harlan with us at the end of the month :D

Just watched the newest fourwheeler tv last night and they had a big caravan of rovers out on the west coast treking to a remote fly fishing lake. Anyway, nice rig!!

Yeah, sorry, I sorta rambled there. You know what I mean!!

There's a guy running around charlotte with a full ARB outfitted Disco II, it looks really nice. If I remember correctly, he's even running the sand/traction boards on the roof. Very Camel Trophy!! But a good look none the less.

Hey, a question for you Rover guys. Are the reliablility issues as big of a problem as I"ve heard, or is that just another....."oh it's just british" deal?

in short, yes they have reliablity issues. however, they are never ones that leave you stranded. a little oil spot here, a little oil spot there, its just the rover marking its territory.

btw, if you live in charolette, the best disco 2 in the country is in your town. greg davis is putting volvo portals under his disco, 1st guy to do it to a disco 2.

Thanks for the article. I had debated about this since I got them. Luckily, they haven't been mounted yet. So, I spoke with the manager where I bought the tires, and he said he'd gladly do the swap. I should be able to swap them Monday.

I should have a good bit fewer clearance issues this way.

I'll get some pics up once they're on.

I still prefer the look of a slightly wider tire. I would have chosen the 12.50's over a 10.50, but that's just my opinion. I actually would have prefered a 38x14.50 instead of my 38x12.50's, but the price was right. and again, it's juts a cosmetic thing, I think they look better.

no its real. i own a plot of land out near JC and my father is an avid games man. the reason i drive a rover is that he grew up in africa and he says that it is the only vehicle to use on the property. we have several species of animals on the propery, gazell, zebras, and 2 lions in cages, male and female. my father says that these animals remind him of home, and make it easier for him to cope with living in east tn.

I agree tha it 's a matter of opinion if a wider tire looks better or not, but there are two schools of thought about tire width for mud. 1) The skinny tire can cut through the soft stuff and reach down to the solid stuff. 2) The wider tire has more surface area thus keeping the tire above the muck.

I personally, am in the second group. If the tire is wider it can more easily go over soft stuff without damaging the grass or cutting deeper ruts, and if it does sink to the bottom of the goo, there is more surface area to grip the harder stuff. Wider tires can also more fully envelope rocks to gain additional traction when rock crawling.

This leads to another issue. Wider tires = more grip. More grip = more stress on drive components. Make certain that your axles can stand the extra loads placed on them by wide tires, aggressive tread, and lockers. (I may have said this before, but axles are expensive).

I choose to use the widest tire that I can without rubbing or scuffing the bodywork at full flex (my axles and u-joints are finally up to the task  )

r1ng3l78
04-21-2006, 12:42 PM
the wider tire in the rocks is up for debate since a narrower tire means greater psi on the rock which also equals traction. i think a good indicator is what the pros are runnin and you don't see many 16-18 wide tires on comp rigs. i like em stickin out to protect the body (and me) but because of backspace or axle width and not the width of the tire.

Greater surface area on the pulling face of the lugs is what makes the wider tire get more traction than a skinny tire.

yeah i bought a 3" but it raise it 4.5"s. yeah anything 3 or more and you'll have to convert your rear driveshaft from rotoflex to a standard u-joint. its about a 250 dollar conversion...and it comes a replacement driveshaft.

Congrats on the new motor man, bet that was pricey though!

nope my friend this is how our GREAT GOD provides.......

i got the engine for.........800 bucks!

its a engine from a 2000 Discovery 2 (like Richards) that has been completely remanufactured.

I have a great machanic here nearby thats doing the work for me, and after buying a few more parts (hoses, belts, etc.) i will have a new engine swap for under 2000 dollars.

now who said rovers are expensive!....haha usually a new engine cost right under 4000 dollars, and used between 2000-3000 dollars.

alot of good things are happening to me and i need to figure out a way to feel worry of all these blessings

Did my first oil change today so I figured I'd give a update. Runs better then it ever did with more power and better MPG. I can drive 5.5 hrs to Moab without worry now.

I noticed alot of stuff to improve on my vehicle while i was in Moab last, so I've been working on some custom work. AKA I'm putting my degree to good use

Phase 1.....Complete

Phase 1 is a strong set of sliders. Not any slider will work for what I want. Met a guy in Wheat Ridge, Co that is a big time Rover guy too that is trying to get his name out there. He made these sliders for me, and now I've taking all my designs, drawing, and ideas and sharing them with him in hopes of designing the ultimate winch bumper, slider, rear bumper package.

I have a very slim / stout design for the front. For the rear I'm doing something I've never seen on a discovery. If you know me, you know I have a degree in engineering design and my designs are top notch.

heres some pictures of the sliders and i'll have the front and rear done by the end of September in time for the October Moab trip.

As you can tell I've noticed some areas of improvement for the rear bumper
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/IMGP3155.jpg

The sliders stick out flush with the tires which allows for a great step up into the truck and perfect for standing on with the doors shut to get gear (skis) off the rack.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/IMGP3153.jpg

Once we put them on I put a hi lift on the slider and lifted the truck up to test them and (ha) put my rear spring back into the perch

Started on mocking up the new front bumper today. I'm not 100% about it yet. help me massage it into a killer design.

key points im trying to incorporate:

* good approach angle
* i don't want anything to block the air flow to my grill
* intragrated skid plate that stops at the steering linkage
* two light tabs
* two recovery points

Looks like a good start. I think its a little beefy in the middle versus the sides though. The front being flat hurts approach angle directly in the center.. Maybe slope the front where the winch mounts at an angle? This way you still get the surface width to mount to but the winch is kinda leaned back. It would help approach and and slim the center section. But sloping the center you would probably have to slope the sides too, which equals more work. :( .

These are just ideas though.

With all this new armor going on are you gonna exo it too?

Rover is looking good.

Derrickalda
11-04-2007, 12:02 AM
thanks Wes. yeah its that center I'm not happy with. i was thinking about slopping the front too.

keep the ideas coming!

nah i don't "think" i'll ever exo it. this is just the result of finally attempting to learn to weld, and having a CNC plasma cutter.

Derrick, I got a Harbor Freight winch plate (for Wranglers - $38 shipped, 1/4" thick) and plan on chopping off the sides to use it as the center section for my FSJ bumper. From the corners to the center section, I plan on using 6" wide C-channel, only it will be angled 30 degrees inward from vertical, and I will cut out the center section to bevel the corners to about 2" total height. Mine won't look as spiffy as yours, but it'll get the job done & maintain the mean, all-business look I want. Not to mention be cheap. Herculiner paint, as usual.

FSJ's are like Rovers in at least one way - neither one likes to have anything blocking the airflow to the grille.

yeah too many rover guys put tons of useless junk in front of their grill and then complain when they over heat on the trail. i've never had that problem and hope to stay problem free in that area. over heating a Al engine is BAD news!!! the plan is to try to make this a design good enough to reproduce and sale to the picky rover crowd. i think im going to herculine it also. the herculine i put on my hood a year ago is wearing thin, but i can just put more on. it still looks and preforms good, it just is getting thin.

I haven't updated this thing in a while. I've done a few things in the past few months I'll add to my build.

1. Design, built, and mass produced front bumper

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/hicountry%20offroad/bumper3.jpg

2. replaced my TSL Radial 33's with more TSL Radial 33's

3. Added a true trac to the rear ( I know what you're thinking, but I drive in snow 9 months out of the year. so a detroit is out of the question) Also added HD axles.

4. Currently working on a swing arm for my truck.

it has a couple of concepts.
1. adjustable tire mount (31-37 inch tire)
2. hold 2 5gal jerry cans
3. hold hi-lift
4. tray for recovery gear or cooler
5. * hinged parellel to the door

I wanted the swing arm to linked to the door so that when you open the door the swing arm will open 5% more as the door opens. This has a couple benefits..... being hinged to the body makes it more stable and takes away vibrations. when you lock your door the swing arm is locked also. plus if takes away from having a latch thats in the way on your bumper.

so far im very happy. on the left side there will be a small bolt on tray that can fit recovery gear or a small cooler. on the right side the hi-lift will mount vertical.

PS....my bumper is green because i only have a etching primer on it

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/IMGP4100a.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/IMGP4102-1.jpg

5. I cut my fenders out and made some custom flares.

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e91/derrickalda/IMGP4097a.jpg

I think thats about it for now.......ever weekend I'm wheeling & building

Derrickalda
09-03-2008, 01:33 AM

Kinda like it. Does the extra pin help hold is closed? That seems like a lot of weight back there.

in the rover world we like to be prepared on the trail. usually rover guys throw everything on a rack. well that raises you center of gravity and so on. the tire already mounts to the back door. by taking it off you save the bushing on the door. then by putting things like fuel cans and jacks on the swing arm you lower your center of gravity. the swing arm itself weighs 29.6 pounds. we have a few places that were are going to trim to save even more weight. i made the spindle out of 1 1/4 round stock on my lathe. it held the tire, fuel cans, jack, Matt, and I (480 lbs between the two of us) and it didn't bend. so i think (still in test phase) the spindle has plenty of strength.

the latch just secures the swing arm to the bumper so theres ZERO rattles while driving

That was not a critisism it was an observation. I have wheeled with "Rover" guys before and understand.

A funny story:

I was wheeling with a bunch of Rover guys and one of them was reading the altitude off the GPS on the laptop that was mounted in it all day. On the way home he asked what time it was. We all thought this was funny.

An overdue update of mods from the last few months.

I went to a longr Fox 2.0 shock so I had to do something about my front shock towers. once again since theres not much of a land rover aftermarket i opted to make my own. adjustable and made of of 1/4" plate. the adjustability is made possible by a movable 1/2" grade 8 bolt. well my next will not have the single sheer point. ill go with a double sheer. one bolt has already rattled loose, but the nut was replaced with a plastic insert lock nut.

Because of my tire carrier the rear of the truck sags a little. easy fix...i made a set of spring spacers. i measured about 1inch of lift would level the truck. i got a piece of solid Al stock, and then wrote a CNC program to mill a set of two.

My rear suspension has the ability to dislocate the springs. when you dislocate a spring it is necessary to re-seat the spring correctly. i wanted to kill two birds with one stone, and do something for a rover i have never seen. so i built a bump cone. 1/4" plate with a daystar bump stop.

Flex shots....

as you can see i am getting all the flex as possible out of the front. i have a design for a bolt on 2-link/panhard with adjustable castors made of 1/4"+ plate, DOM, and hiems. I also will design a new sway bar system for the front. i am moving soon, so this will probably have to wait until spring 09.

i designed/made it so i love it. mine is the original. so the latest design is so much better. mine hasn't let me down though. I have been helping Matt (hicountry owner) with design and marketing for over a year. Matt is a great family man that loves the Lord, and HiCountry is a talented company with a genuine business outlook.

im leaving hicountry to move back to east tn. im still going to help, with all that i can.

best mod to date!!! the rover is offically my trail rig. i bought a chevy colorado today. its a loaded crew cab with 4x4, and locking rear diff. plus the 5 cycl. engine that has 242 hp and gets 24 mpg. it should make a good daily driver.

You know, I have seen your rover at church a million times and never really stopped and looked at it very closely, I guess cause I'm always running late. I had no idea you had put this much work in it. Good job, man. You will have to help me out with some stuff on my truck when time and money permit.

i havent been able to drive it for a few months now. the dmv is not letting me renew my tags. I have a tennessee title. I had colorado tags. The DMV in TN is telling me i need to have a colorado title in order to get a TN tag. Colorado is telling me they don't care where the car is titled in order to get a CO tag. SOOOO i can't easily get a colorado so the tennessee DMV people can recharge me taxes so they can turn around and give me another TN title.

did i mention i work out of town 5-6 days out of the week.

boo

So why would TN care that the rig was tagged in CO? Why do they need to know that it was tagged in CO? Makes no since to me. Heck give it to George. He can get anything titled.

mine was a daily driver for a few years, up until a couple months ago. Ive driven it coast to coast 4 times, 3 times after it was lifted.

i hope to sell it once i get the title stuff fixed

I've never been impressed by powder coat longevity. At least now its just a rattle can away from looking like new whenever you scratch it.

I am now the PROUD owner of this fine tuned machine. Derrick really did do a great job with all his custom work. I took it out to Uwharrie National Forest the same weekend with my girl and even with my limited off road experience we was able to have a great time. Thank G-d for Uhaul because gas is something i cant afford. oh and you CAN put 3x the recommended load on an auto transport trailer, just sayin.
