View Full Version : Next rig?

Redman_30_06

I am trying to decide between these two rigs as to which one will be my next one. Since I can't seem to make my mind up I figured I would get everybodys input. If I get the yota I plan to put longfields in it and add a winch along with a few other things. If I get the kaiser I will wheel it like it sits. And for all of you toyota guys what is involved in putting in the 30 spline longfields? I assume you have to have a 30 spline locker.
Thanks

I voted for the kaiser just because of the cool factor and it looks like its very capable.

The yota would be good due to being smaller and able to get places a FS wouldn't be able to.

The size of the kaiser is the only thing making me question it.

Can't see the stuff on the Kaise, but I see by the title it is a M715. it is a big truck. guy in our club has one If you run mud it's great. 401FI. Lousy trail rig. I really like that yota. $4500. Those tires are $350 each.

Putting longs in a toy housing is fairly easy and straightforward. You dont need any special locker as the stock axles are 30 spline on the ends, and 27 spline going into the birf. The longs are 30 spline going into the birf. check out http://pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=459180 thats the "bible" of toyota mini truck knowledge

btw...thats a really fair price on the toy...just put it on propane, hydro assist steering, longfields, and wheel it hard

Man thats alot of tech. Looks like yota axles would be a pain to change on the trail. I am leaning more towards the kaiser all the time.

Here are a couple of pics of the kaiser.

At first I thought 8000 was a little high too but I don't think I could build the same rig for the same money. The onboard welder and onboard air might come in handy too.

Hadfield4WD

looks like he cleaned the wheels to sell.

$8000 is a lot of money. What motor is in it? Looks like a 14b and D60.

Being a Jeep guy myself I'd prpbaly go for the yota for what I do. Mostly rock crawling. I have enough time beating my xj let alone something as big as a M715. Depends on what kind of wheeling you do.

Could be. I just assumed it came from a chevy swap and the 14b is more common. Still don't think it's a great deal. Those things come with a D80 rear and D70 front why put in weaker stuff?

Bluegill

Specs on that 715 are 35 spline ChrMo D60 front with Detroit, welded D70 rear. :smokin: The factory M715 axles are less desireable than you'd think - old technology such as low spline counts & closed knuckles. :pukeright:

I'd say "Sgt. Rock" there needs a bigger winch - the Warn XD9 might run out of grunt.

After looking at it more I'm really liking the Kaiser more. I think with the wheels and tires sticking out as far as they do you may not get that much body damage.

Plus like I said before.........IT'S COOL and different!!!!

The big Kaiser is just that BIG. I would stick with a smaller rig.

Plus if you plan on trailering that kaiser will take a big tow rig and a WIDE trailer which is more $.

Either way it will be fun :)

Plus like I said before.........IT'S COOL and different!!!!

My tires stick out and I still get body damage as the tires come off the rocks the doors and other exposed things get hit. Like I said it's all what you like to wheel I like the technical rocks. I'd beat the crap out of that body. We have a guy in our club that wheels his and doesn't touch the body because he doesn't do the same stuff (with the M715 at least). Yes it is cool and different. It would be a fun second rig in my opinion.

What motor is in that?

Bluegill
07-30-2007, 11:54 AM
Guys, the M715's body is no wider than my Cherokee - exactly the same. It's WMS is about 3" wider, but that's all. It is about 10" longer wheelbase than my 109" Chero, but that still doesn't make it too huge for the trails around here. A '78 or later Bronco or K5 Blazer in fact has a wider body than this truck. Yes, I've wheeled a few spots with the Chero that got a little tight, but nothing unmanageable. Honestly I like the challenge of wheeling full size, and the .063" (aka 1/16") thickness outer sheet metal on FSJ's do resist dents better than modern rig bodies do.

Granted the Yota will fit in tighter places, but that doesn't mean it's more capable. I still say "Beef.....it's what's for dinner." 8)
That's just me.

I went and looked at the turn key buggy I wasn't to impressed with it. I thought about the YJ on 40's but the 44 front scares me. That CJ is nice but I don't want to buy it and then have to find a front axle. I told George the other day I am just tired of wrenching on stuff and never wheeling I am sure I will have to change things on the kaiser but as it sits it is ready to wheel. The front axle is not a closed knuckle it has a chevy front end with 35 spline all the way around and a detroit. I thought the truck was bigger than what it was until I went and looked at it with the bed being bobbed its really not that big and the hummer beadlocks bring the tires in a long way. Here are some specs for thoose who have been asking.

Buick 350
Turbo 400
203 to 205 doubler
Welded dana 70 rear with disc brakes it is 23 spline but the shafts are the same diameter as a 35 spline.
onboard welder
onboard air (front bumper is an air tank)
full hydro steering
full cage
racing seats with harnesses
9000 lb warn ( I kinda wonder if thats big enough)
35 gallon fuel tank
spare driveshafts f&r
spare axle shafts inner and outer up front
spare alternator
spare PS pump
spare orbital for the steering and all the hoses
it has power brakes as well.

All in all I don't see me being able to build this truck for 8000. I have never wheeled a full size I would like to see what it is like. I am not really a death wheeler so if I can't fit up a trail I am not going to loose sleep over it. But I still like the thought of the yota being able to work around things. I just don't wanna buy it and as soon as I get it start changing things.

By the way I'm not sure you guys are too much help the poll has stayed just about tied the whole time.

Where are you at Gordon you usually have some good words of wisdom on situations like this. :?:

The Kaiser is cool, but for a good all-around trail rig I'd go with the Yota. It's a really good looking truck. Just swap the carb out for propane and wheel the heck out of it. And if you start breaking birfs you can upgrade to Longfields then. If I was buying another rig today it would probably be a Yota. I've wheeled with several of them, and they just flat out go.

With the Kaiser you'd be limited on the trails that you could run without the risk of absolutely trashing the body. And like others said, it's big, heavy, and would probably be very cumbersome off-road.

Good idea. Look for a built YJ or even a TJ at that budget. even if you don't buy a new one bring the rubi to bumpus on the 11th. ;)

A flop in a TJ isn't too bad to fix (windshield frame, cowl work, etc), but a roll is a different story. With the wide tire stance mine has (from the low backspaced rims) it has surprised me with stability off camber. I also intentionally kept the center of gravity lower than the average TJ suspension running 33" tires. ;)
