As some of you know I ended up with Ftoy Chassis #510 from the raffle in Harlan this spring. After some contemplation I've decided to build this buggy as a 4x4Grace Ftoy. Grace has been a blessing to me and maybe this will help us spread the word.

I searched for a while and found an excellent donor rig that I picked up a month or so ago. I've been saving some money and ordering parts during this time as well. So here is a list of what I have.

Already have these items
--------------------------
Chassis #510 Built by Apline
1982 Toyota as donor
Trail gear Hi Steer
Hunsaker Seats & 5 Point Harness
Marlin built L52HD Transmission
Marlin Doubler
Aussie Lockers F/R
BTF Shock Hoops
BTF Diff Armor
RockCityFab Tcase Mount
RockCityFab UBolt Flip Kits
IFS Stearing Conversion
Chevy Springs (Will be replaced by comp legal springs in phase 2 if the wheel base works out ok with them in phase 1)
22R motor
Hendrix Motor Mounts
15x10 wheels (once I determine backspacing works ok with the rig DIY beadlocks will be installed)
Longfield Super Set 30 splines front axles and birfields
Poly Performance rear Chromo's

Left to buy
--------------
39"+ IROKS
1.5x6" Ram and Lines
Axle Gussets
Beadlock rings
Propane (Phase 2)
Competition Legal Springs(Phase 2)
Long travel Shocks
Rear Seat(phase 2)
1.75" Tubbing for Frame additions
1" Sq tubbing for floor board
1.5" Sq tubbing for floor board
Sheet metal/Alum/Plastic or something for the floor, side panels and roof

Thanks.

Yah the chassis has the rear support tube bent for a bench seat like this one.

Where can you get one and how much do they run??

Hendrix Motorsports in CA and Alpine Auto works in Memphis sell them.

The chassis are $900ish. However these are Ftoy chassis with a stampted serial # for competition. Its only about $300 worth or HREW if you have somebody that can bend it and put it together.

So I would be better off gettin g a Four Runner frame and having Bobby Eden build it from there.

So I would be better off getting a Four Runner frame and having Bobby Eden build it from there.that would be correct but if you wanted to compete in theformula toy veents you have to buy the hendrick chassis
cant wait to see the buggy on the trail wes and maybe a chance to drive it on a trail to see if i like that kind of wheeling (i know i will )have been thinking about linking the front on blue  i keep changing my mind (lil says im like a women ) any way if ya need any help give me a call

My Poly rears and 30 Spline Longs showed up today. :smokin: I'm still waiting on Motormounts from Hendrix though.

I got a price on new 39.5"x13x15 Irocs Bias today. $247/Tire + Shipping. Does that sound ok or do you all think i can find'm cheaper?

Also decided to do 5" lift springs but I've still got to figure out what length shackles to run.

I will be ordering the rest of the parts next week and start building very soon.

Anybody got recomendations on wheel spacers with 39" tires on a leaf sprung yota?

thanks.

Bluegill
08-02-2007, 01:56 AM
Sounds like a pretty good deal on the Iroks. Cheapest advertised price I found on the net is $15/tire more. As long as the wheels are 3.75" (or less) backspacing, you probably won't need spacers. I'm using Toyota billet spacers on my FSJ until I get the J-10 rear axle under it (gotta move perches & shock mounts). Once the swap is done I won't need the spacers anymore.

I gave $1,000 even for my tires at Goforth in Sevierville. I bought them on a farm number as ag tires though.

Hokie_YJ
08-02-2007, 09:01 PM
Where did you get your quote from? I ordered mine from DC. IIRC it was like $908 shipped for my 37's, so roughly $227 per tire. That was the cheapest I found. I picked mine up at the terminal though.

Jeep07
08-02-2007, 10:44 PM
www.ntwonline.com gave me the quote. for the best price call them instead of using their website.

Bluegill

It wouldn't hurt to check with DC & see if he can beat NTW's price.

As bad as people talk about them I've always had good luck with 4wheel parts. You can call and haggle them down alot, it's almost like they wont let you off the phone without buying them and will even call you back if you refuse their offer.

TiredIronGRB

I usually find the lowest online price than print it out and take it to Ronnie at 4Wheels and he meets the price. That's just for the tires no mounting.

I got an AWESOME deal on my TrXus from them ($592 for 5 - 33x12.50/15), but after 2 weeks & they hadn't shipped yet - I called them and sternly asked to cancel my order if they weren't going to send em. The tires shipped 5hrs later. :smokin: 4WP definitely has the most buying power of all off road vendors - they are a primary branch of TransAmerican Auto - who also happen to own a majority of tire manufacturers like ProComp, Mickey Thompson, Cooper, etc.

Nope, has to be stock length. I have some new springs for all 4 corners.

Yes Bill the Xray pics aren't great but as I told james, they captured the moment ;) I can't find the good camera so the phone had to do. I will say Kingsport Auto Recyclers does a good job and they are quick. If your in kingsport and need to junk some stuff I recommend them.

I made some chassis mounts that allow me to remove the chassis from the frame while I'm building. Then I built the floor frames and started the frames for the seats.

Setup the notcher (These are handy.. I've been doing the Chop Saw notching 101 and this thing is much quicker)

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Dec%2026/DSCF4274%20%5B640x480%5D.JPG

Made these from 1.75" HREW and some Box tubbing.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Dec%2026/DSCF4275%20%5B640x480%5D.JPG

Welded them to the chassis so I could get rid of the 2x4's. Now the chassis just sits on top of the frame :)

Today I mounted the seats, peddles and steering. I look at other builds to get the design for the peddle bracket. Its really nice to sit in the drivers seat now and know what it gonna feel like to drive it :)

The day started slow working on brackets for the seats.

Then It picked up momentum when I got to the peddles and quickly fabbed up the brackets for it using my TD plasma.

I mounted the radiator, built a winch plate and cut the dash bar. Then I had to quit to go get steel.. Got to the steel yard and they closed early today :(. So I wasted 2 hours..

Started the day off with the radiator and decided to run an electric fan so I could get the winch as far back as possible. I've seen several 22R's on pane running a small electric fan with no probs so I figured I would go that route. I took some 1" Sq tube and drilled some holes to match the brackets on the radiator then I notched them so they would slip down between the frame rails.. I set the radiator and tacked the new mounts in place. I plan on adding another support to these for front-back/side-side movement. I ended up welding and removing this thing about 3 times to get it where I wanted it.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Dec%2028/Ftoy_510_071228_005.JPG

Next I started on the winch mount for the front. I took some 3/16" plate that was bent on the edges (looked alot like a standard winch plate but wider). I cut it down on the edges and notched it on one side to go around the support plate on the passenger side of the frame.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Dec%2028/Ftoy_510_071228_007.JPG

Holes drilled for the winch and I also cut a channel out for the rope to go straight down so I can try to hook it to the front axle to cinch the front end down. Not sure if this will work but it took a few minutes and was worth a try. I also put holes in for the fair lead mount on the bottom.

I feel like I'm moving along at a good pace. My wife said it didn't look like I did anything today.... I guess once I do axles and tires it will look like a buggy.

Tomorrows List.

- Get Steel in the morn so I can work over the holiday

- Pickup rotors and calipers for the front axle

- Clean up knuckles and start to put the front axle back together.

- Break down the rear axle and weld some armor on it and see how my home maid disk brake brackets fit.

It's a big list but a buddy said he was coming up to help :)

Thanks for looking.

Looking good man! I love the oldschool SR5 steering wheel in a buggy  . That winch plate worked out well too... Are you going to run some kind of protection in front of the radiator in case of a winch malfunction or something? It's close enough to where it might be a factor.. I dunno.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one turns out.

ive got a question why do you want to cinch down the front axle
have seen several rigs done that way just dont know why

To keep the front end from unloading on climbs. The waterfall at callalentee is a good example of when one needs it. And in competitions the stabler your rig the better and the winch allows you to control the suspension. I will have a smaller 3klbs winch for the rear axle.

The steering wheel will get replaced with a smaller one and a quick disconnect :). To hard to get in and out of the seat with that one.

I hadn't really thought about the winch messing up and damaging the radiator but I guess it could happen. I plan on running synthetic line which might help with that..

Thanks for the feedback. Keep'm coming.

First cut some holes in the skid that are distanced from the frame rails

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2003%202008/BuildingSkid2/Ftoy_510_080104_002.JPG

I used some 2"x0.25 angle for the brackets that will weld onto the frame to hold the skid up and cut some holes in them

Then cut some tubing into 1" chunks and took a 3/4" washer and welded it to one end of the tubbing.

Then put the bolt through the washer with the head recessed in the tubbing

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2003%202008/BuildingSkid2/Ftoy_510_080104_001.JPG

Then put the bolt through the angle and put a nut on the backside and tack the nut to the angle so installation doesn't require two wrenches

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2003%202008/BuildingSkid2/Ftoy_510_080104_003.JPG

Here it is ready for instalation.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2003%202008/BuildingSkid2/Ftoy_510_080104_004.JPG

Then I put them over the holes in the skid and tacked them to the topside of the skid.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2003%202008/BuildingSkid2/Ftoy_510_080103_004.JPG

After that we flipped the skid up onto the frame and lined everything up and I tacked the brackets to the frame. (loosten the bolts just a little so there is some slack so you can get them really good and tight when the rig is right side up so it wont rattle against the frame.

Then I took it back apart and welded everything solid.

Thats pretty much it.

Hopefully tomorrow :/ I spent all day on the axles...

I know now why god gave me the chassis. It was to teach me patience, because dealing with Toyota axles is truly an annoying task. I had been dreading it for weeks and today showed me why. I should have just bought Georges portals and built a crazy buggy.

This entry has several days of updates but it ends with a bang. The frame is right side up, springs are installed, motor trans and tcase are installed. Axles are under the rig with a fresh rebuild :) and I put the 35's on it for now.

Cut some plates with the plasma for new homemade motor mounts. (yes solid for now. If it causes issues I will put a rubber bushing between the mount and the motor.)

That's it for now. These springs are gonna be very flexy I think. I could easily get the front and rear to move down several inches with my 250lbs of weight.

I hope to keep building from the ground up by doing the traction bar (thinking slip joint), shocks, bump stops and tie in the chassis for good next. I have a full day Saturday and a lot of time Sunday so maybe I can get most of that done by this weekend.

Also Bill, Ben and George came by on Saturday and helped out a lot. Thx guys.

Thanks for looking.

your making some good progress. Awesome Job. I know I am glad I didn't win that thing. I don't have the skills yet to that kinda work. I will suggest though going back and adding rubber bushings to your engine mounts. with all the Vibes and torque I would think something would give. Probably the Block.

I'm pretty sure FSBS's buggy ran solid mounts with no issues. The 22r on pane is a pretty smooth motor and the after market mounts I looked at are solid mounts too. If it becomes an issue I will def add them though.

Im looking at replacing the bushings with some lexan based bushings that are stiffer. If it becomes and issue I will do alumn bushings. Right now I'm running poly and not rubber which is a little firmer.

i ran into the solid/soft mount problem on my jeep but the way you mount your tranny should be just fine with solid motor mounts since the mount is so wide it'll resist movement alot. and your dealing with less torque than a 4.2 as well (not starting a brand war).

I like that front steer axle, nice fab work to add strength. Are all straight axle toytas closed knuckle like that one? that axle looks like the front axle on my tractor.

What's the caster at on your front axle? It looks like the pinion is pointing at the ground. It looks like you definitely will need to do something. Shims, shorter shackles, lower the front spring hanger, or cut the perches off and rotate the axle and re-weld. Otherwise the steering will be all sorts of screwy.

About halfway through the post above the image of the axle I wrote:

I have some front pinion angle work to do. Sits at 12* right now. I have some 7* steel shims that I'm gonna throw on to see how that helps. Right now I would be binding yokes like crazy I think.

I will be doing that tomorrow as well as some more stuff on the rear axle for strength.

I built a gusset for the rear axle similar to Hobies on the #10 rig. I had to do it along the back of the axle because the has the inspection port on it and the track bar mount. I had to do the gusset east coast style using some nice diamond plate :).

Took some spare plate from the skid plate to use for the rear lower shock tabs. (I hate to throw steel away so I use as much scrap as I can.)

Here is the material I decided to use for the rear gussets. I chose it because its diamond plate just so I would have some East Coast Ftoy style on the rig)

Man I know what you mean about 4 linking it. I think it would look good like that too. to bad you can't do that. Through on some air shocks.......

SO maybe when your done with the competitive stuff you can turn around and do links. Well actually you could go ahead and through them on. You just can't compete in that one class.

I bent two full hoops. One for the front and one for the rear. Well, I designed them to small so the one for the rear was perfect for the front and the one for the front got cut in half to become shock hoops. I also built a gusset for the track bar mount out of some plate.

Shock tabs welded to rear spring plate.

Little trick to get the front end coming back around to slid down with the back end of the tube. Otherwise it will hit the top of the tube and bind.

I got a 1700lb winch from TSC tonight and built a cross member with some scab plates on the ends to mount in the rear of the frame above the axle. I cut some 1/4" plate and drilled holes to match the pattern for the winch and welded it to the cross member. Then I started on the rear hoop to tie the chassis into the frame on the back. Made the rear hoop 41" outside to outside and then I made some 1" tall supports to make up the space at to bottom. Then I welded it in as well as finished welding the rear cross member in on the topside.

1700 lbs warn utility winch.

Next is finish the upper mounts for the shocks Front and Rear, build the traction bar and tap the steering box for the hydro assist, maybe Wednesday I will get that done.

Saturday I ran the brake lines down the passenger side and drilled and tapped the bolt holes in the frame that hold the lines in place. Then I tore the steering box down for the drill/tap process. Sunday I started working on the mounts for the propane tanks. I wanted some cargo area in the back and wanted to keep the rear seat area open for some seats. I also wanted it to be pretty easy for myself to change out the tanks without having to lean my back over the side and lift the tank straight over the side bars, so the result I came up with seems to accomplish all those goals.

New propane Tank.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2027%202008/Ftoy_510_080127_001.JPG

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Jan%2027%202008/Ftoy_510_080127_003.JPG

Side drilled and tapped. I had to do this side instead of the "A" because that fitting on the front would've been in danger of being hit by rocks or trees etc since it was right out front.

Here is my solution for mounting the tanks. The tank will simply sit in the two rails and have a set of straps to hold it in place.

Install my proportioning valve

Run a line for the propane tank from the rear to the front.

Clevis mount for a D-Ring for the rear winch.

Mount battery box

Flooring

Cut the belly skid a little for the traction bar

Seat belt attachment points

Firewall sheet metal

Propane to 22r adapter plate

Gas pedal mount

Dash with new panels

Wiring

Buy some brake lights and head lights.

Install ARP studs when they get here from FROR.

Build front and rear drive shafts.

Fluids and grease

Adjust the front low range box so it doesn't interfere with the trans shifter.

A lot of work has been done but very few things really stand out as large achievements. I've plumbed the rig and welded on about every bracket I can think of. I did a lot of running around digging up the parts for the propane etc. I got the battery box welded in and acquired about everything for the electrical. After I had everything welded on the frame and installed to make sure it fit I unbolted everything and painted the rig with Hammered Silver. After that I started the bolt on process. I had to make a few trips to the exhaust shop getting a muffler and some tubing I could bend to make the exhaust fit. I also welded the front top shock mounts on and setup the bump stops for the rear. I have around 5" of up-travel on all 4 corners. I also installed the proportioning valve for the rear discs and the line lock on the front so I can do rear burns. I also installed some ARP knuckle studs on Tuesday night. Today James came over and started cleaning up the motor and removing all the unnecessary junk.

Here are the pics.

Dad and I did a little riding on the farm today to test the rigs. There was on old logging road that has about 15 years of growth on it. That didn't stop us, we just did some trail blazing opening the trail back up. Anyway the Ftoy ran pretty good and had some idling issues over time. As the engine would warm up the idle would advance quite a bit so I have some issues to work out there. The suspension did really well but I do have a few adjustments to make. The rear shocks need to be moved up some to allow for a tad more up-travel so the bump stops can do their job. Anyway the ride went well but dad did take a little sheet metal damage.

Loaded up ready to go.

Just and update on the rig.

The rear winch bar has help up well to the use and hasn't bent or acted like it was going to. Just an FYI.

The rig has had a few issues with clearance in the rear. The brake line coming down the the T was mounted at the top of the traction bar bracket and the suspension can compress so much in the rear that it hit the winch mount bar and pinched the steel braided line and cut it open. Also compressed the rear suspension up so much that it hit the muffler and jamed it up giving it some more clearance :smokin: .

On the front I had clearance issues with the winch cable bar that goes under the motor for the winch line to pivot on to suck the front axle up and the hydro assist ram. When the suspension compressed the fittings on the top of the steering ram would hit that bar. Resolved the problem by adding a little more bump stop and rotating the ram forward and using the Jam nuts to hold it there.

I am getting ready to get into a small phase 2 build. I'm adding suspension seats and going from 37's to 40's for tire size. Also putting on 6 shooter knuckles and going to add a new clutch, some Marlin HD axles seals and internal beadlocks. One day I will go for HP front 3rd and ARB's but not yet.

Just figured I would update this with stuff that changed or didn't work for those building there rigs.

Well I've decided to make a few changes. I've been disappointed with the 22r from day 1. It just doesn't have the torque I want for the wet weather wheeling and muddy hill climbs. So I'm dropping in a 4.3 and a th350 trans mated to the Toy cases.

I've also done some calc work to help me figure out what gear options I have until I get the swap done. I often find myself having trouble finding the right ratio for hard launches and hill climbs because I need to gain wheel speed and keep momentum but sometimes the motor will start to loose RPM when the tires heat up and start to grip because of the lack of torque and then it will bog down and I'm done. So here is a small chart.

http://www.wesleycombs.com/Portals/0/Blog/Ftoy/Nov%204th%202008/Ftoy%20Drive%20Ratio%20Toy%20Trans%20High%20To%20L ow.JPG

Done with WeRock Comps. Local stuff maybe. These toy axles are built with all chromo so I will run them until they become problematic. I'd say I will keep the leafs for a while. I contemplated building a new buggy but there is no way I will have the time. My only complaint has been the torque anyway and this will fix that.

Welp a little change of plans on the motor swap. I Went to Maryville today and picked up a 70% of a buggy that has a 22RE on propane with a super charger on it. The supercharger is a camden unit that bolts to the side of the intake manifold. The motor also has an upgraded exhaust manifold on it. It has a billet head with a 261 Crawler Cam and oversized valves as well. Overall there is a good chance this motor puts out about 200hp which will be a big step up from my previous 22r's that are lucky to get 90 hp on there best day. Also this unit is setup to run on propane which is even better :)

Now I just gotta get this in the buggy :).

The 4.3 and T350 will have a new buggy to call home next year ;)

Man the axles under that buggy you got are HUGE!!!...what are they 2ton....LOL!!

Yup those bad boys came in real handy..

I spent some time tonight draining the current motor and disconnecting the majority of the hoses and wiring to get it ready to pull.

After some measuring I'm gonna have to redo some stuff on the front end to get the motor to fit. Since the new motor has the SC on it it has an extra sheave on the crank which will hit the radiator in its current location. So now I'm gonna have to move the radiator and All this moving will require a little reworking on my winch. After that I have to redo some exhaust since the new header goes into a 4-1 collector instead of the stock setup. That mod requires a little clearance work on the Tcase xmember so a 2" exhaust can fit between it and the flat belly. :/

No matter how easy a swap should be I don't think it's ever cut and dry.

I did notice a few things about the new motor. It has a GM 1 wire alt on it and a newer PS pump :) The new PS pump does have different fittings though so I've got a little work to do there as well.

Not sure how long this will take but I should be able to pull the motor next time I'm down there to work on it.

Progress?.. yeah my cold seems to be going away :) so atleast I've made progress there.. I did walk by it in the garage tonight though.. Maybe one night this week I can finish getting the motors pulled and start working on putting the new one in.

I have been figuring out what hydraulic fittings I need since the new motor had a new PSC pump on it and it has different fittings.

Got the motor pulled out tonight and almost got the new motor pulled out of the other buggy. Anybody know how to get grime off the motor and make it look like new? I thought about taking it to center machine shop to see if they could do it.

Soak it down with oven cleaner, then pressure wash it. It actually works pretty good.

ok both motors are out... new motor has a nice center force dual friction clutch and a nice center force pressure plate.. I hope to get some fittings for power steering lined up tomorrow .. Next big hurdle is exhaust, since this on has a nice manifold on it, it requires some custom fab.. 1/2 tempted yo take it too a shop for that and make them deal with it.

Yeah I'd just take it to Jeff's and be done with it.

I don't know who Jeff is, but I'd agree on an exhaust shop. Those guys can do it in less than half the time and make it look good while doing it....! It's ok Wes, you don't have to fab EVERYTHING.....we won't judge you...!

Def not into fabbing everything but it usually just turn out that way :/ .. I'm thinking of just venting the exhaust below the drivers seat and out the belly pan so I can have a 2" pipe all the way out. Right now my rear muffler is getting crunched up by the axle when it flexes all the way up anyway.. And the donor rig has a 2" piped exhaust with a glass pack on it. I figure I just get a 2" down pipe and cut a hole in the belly pan and vent the exhaust that way. Thats the easiest way if I DIYit and probably the fastest way to accomplish things. My drawbacks are the exhaust itself... If I do this am I gonna have to deal with the fumes? The propane burns clean and I can't remember it being a problem..

I wouldn't think it'd be a problem, it's an open rig anyway.

Quick update.

After reading the shackle angle thread on pirate I decided that I needed to make a change. I've also noticed that my rear shackle bushings are shot after 1 year so I ordered some new shackle mounts from TG and plan on doing like Kevin/ski4x4 on PBB (RIP) did and move the mounts back off the rear xmember to get a better angle.

here are the mounts i ordered.

http://www.trail-gear.com/images/2008-1590b-600.jpg

I've thought about just using some 2" Sq stock to get them moved back further. If that's not far enough I will design some other mount to get the shackle angle corrected. This should also lift the back up a little which will help because the rear sits lower than the front.

Belly pan is off and old exhaust is out. Motor is hanging above the engine bay waiting on me to cut the hood bar on the passenger side because the intake is not going to fit with that in there. Might also have to mod the shock mount.

I'm having to go at this 1-2 hours out a time so it's taking a while. Normally this would be sub 2 days even with the modifications to the chassis, exhaust and the cooling system.

Maybe I can get 1/2 day off work tomorrow and get the motor sitting in the engine bay and be ready to start the rework on the rest of the stuff sat..

1 Step at a time nowadays. Building this thing was a different story..

Woohoo it fired up tonight! Temps look good and so does Voltage.. I think my Oil Pressure receiver went bad so I'm gonna have to replace that. I had a really hard time getting it to start and it was 1st due to fuel then spark became an issue. The Larger Coil requires a solid 12+V and last night my battery drained last night.. So tonight I could get the motor to turn over but not actually attempt to really crank. So I put the charger on 10 and went to eat dinner hoping that was the problem. Come back with a good 13v on the meter so I fire her up.

Buggy is loud with an open header right now so I'm hoping the exhaust shop will be open tom morning. If not I will try to fab something up.

Well at 10:00 pm the newest exhaust shop was still open so I've got that done ;), they keep pretty convenient hours but are lacking in the material department so if you don't bring it they can't do it.:icon_lol:

I cleaned up the wiring mess I created earlier and put my wheel spacers back on the rear. Also cleaned up all the tools, got the throttle linkage connected and reinstalled the skid and traction bar.

I plan on taking it to the farm tomorrow for some test riding to see how things go. I still need a way to measure oil pressure so I might pickup a manual gauge tomorrow at advance and I have a protective hood bar I need to add so I don't rip the propane carb off.

Well I took the buggy out today for it's initial run and man did this motor wake it up. I had a great day of riding except for the stupid GM 1 Wire Alt. First off it has been draining by battery every night since I hooked it up so when I get into Harlan to unload the battery had a whopping 4.5v. So I roll the buggy off the trailer and dad gets the jumper cables. We let it charge for a while then get it to crank. The bigger coil requires a solid 12+v to give spark. Then I let the buggy run for a while and charge the motor and its putting out a good 13-14volts. Well about 1/2 way through the day I notice I'm running at 12.7-12.8 volts constant and I just assume the alt has cut off because the battery is charged but that was wrong of me to assume something. So I'm on top of the mountain in the upper rock garden and just make it over a huge rock and the buggy dies. The motor would turn over but not crank and when trying to crank the volt meter reads 11volts. We do a spark test on a plug wire and yup no spark http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/images/smilies/frown.gif So after winching out (yeah the battery could run the winch fine but not the accel supercoil.) I throw a tow strap on it and dad pulls me down the mountain so we can load it on the trailer.

I've now moved the alt to the master switch so it can't drain the battery and I'm gonna go get the alt tested and replace it if needed or I might go back to a toyota alt..

On a good note the motor screams. We ran Lower Damnation and it hopped right up the obstacles with no problem and then we ran big perm which is a steep rocky hill climb with a large obstacle 1/2 way up and then the top is all black harlan county mud. The buggy rocked on big perm with the new motor. It's amazing at how fast the power comes on now. I was actually able to grab a gear in the climb and keep going which amazed me. So I'm not comp legal any more but It's well worth it to get the performance I'm looking for. I didn't feel like the motor was the part holding the buggy back now. I think I still have a little tuning to do on the motor as it wasn't running as smooth as I would like but overall it's a huge difference.

Oh I fixed all that. It wasn't a true one wire. I redid the wiring for a standard 3 wire Alt. It's a 100 amp Chevy 1Ton Van Alt. My Red Top battery was shot as well. So AdvanceAuto replaced it.

Is the small wire connected to a switched power source?

Is the small wire connected to a switched power source?

Actually All wires are now on a switched power source. The main alt charger wire goes to the Master Switch and the voltage sensing wire and the ign wire go to the fuse block which are switched by the ignition switch.

I always run the main post and the big wire on the two wire plug straight to the battery and then run the small wire to switched power.

OK wow been 9 months since I've touched this thread... Might as well document what I did this summer etc.. Lets see, I wheeled it when I had time.. Pretty much made it all summer without breakage and then dad and I ran the race at Chinquipin.. After that I destroyed the rear carrier in Harlan.. It actually broke the carrier itself in half and pushed the ring gear over to 1 side. Thankfully during the summer I had been watching for a set of eLockers to put in the axles and picked them up. So over the past month I've been installing the eLockers as time permits. Also in the process of the summer Dad tuned the motor on the Ftoy and got it running much better.

So this weekend I hope to finish up the lockers and get the wiring done then its ready for a November run and probably hang out in the garage until next spring (unless is snows :) ).. Maybe I will install the rear seat and do some flooring work or something.

Wired up the locker panel last night. It consists of 2 Dual Poll/Dual Throw Momentary switches with a "Locked LED" for both. I cut the locker panel on the CNC table and it has a base it sits in that will be boxed on the back side and then welded to the steering column so the switches are within quick reach of the steering wheel. I still need to cut the rear panel and build a piece that will wrap the 2 pieces together, essentially boxing it in. The panel that actually holds the switches is removable so wiring issues can be addressed by pulling it out of the housing instead of laying on my back under the steering wheel trying to figure out whats going on.

All the wires are soldered together and heat shrink wrapped etc. I tried my best to build this correctly instead of shortcut it with but splices etc. The wire used is called quick cable and its a 10 conductor wire all in 1 nice shielding that you can get at bestbuy in the car audio install bay. It comes in 20' sections and each conductor is 18 gauge.

The letters aren't that clean but I didn't adjust the plasma settings for the thinner material so they aren't that clean on the corners and edges and I was running about 150 ipm which is pretty fast and kills accuracy on letters etc.

OK big thanks to Dad for regearing my rear third member. We had a heck of a time getting it setup. Also a thanks to Rob for giving me a carrier bearing off a v6 third he had.

I took the buggy to the farm today and wore it out trail blazing. I found the weak link of the electric eLocker and that's the wiring pigtails. Ripped one clean off the rear third member motor. So now I'm gonna pull that rear motor and rewire it with a more robust setup.

Did a little work on this rig. Rebuilt the PSPump so it doesn't leak anymore (yeah I'm Thinking green). Also put a new large reservoir on that holds 3x the fluid the stock one did.

I think my TRE's are going bad on the high steer kit so I will be getting some replacements this week.

Well I've let the buggy sit all summer and Fall in the rain.. The last trip I took it out I busted something quick and clean. From the symptoms I thought I had destroyed the Trans.. A month or so ago I pulled the trans and tcases out of the buggy and discovered the trans was in good shape and I had sheered the Input shaft on the rear Tcase. So I ordered a new Chromo Input from Marlin and a rebuilt kit. Rebuilt the Rear Tcase have been putting everything back together.

I've installed the Trans and Tcases and have them drained ready for new fluid.

I'm planning on making some modifications to the buggy so I'll list them out.

1. New Corbeau Baja SS seats. After sitting in the Sun all summer the cheaper seats have fallen apart. I look like I squished a smirf each time I get out of them because of all the blue dye that is on my pants.
2. Reworking Tcase Xmember for better exhaust clearance.
3. Exhaust and Muffler all the way out the back.
4. Rear Benchseat (A Baja SS 36" Bench)
5. New interior panels and a trans tunnel etc.

The seats should be here in a week or so and I still need to order my Metal Brake to do the sheet metal work inside. The exhaust will hopefully be done this next week.
