I am looking at getting a new tool box for the shop. I dont have enough room for the tools that I have, and I still need more tools. I am looking at a Kobalt 41inch stainess top and bottom box. I think that the 41inch is what I need, but I am open to options. Does anyone have any advice on this? Rob

The kobalt tools I have seem to hold up well, so I assume the tool box would also. One thing to look for is roller bearings on the drawer slides. Trust me over the long term that is worth paying the extra for. Often the specs are misleading as the they will say the roller bearing and the casters are roller bearings, not the drawers so check closely.

Whatever you get make sure it has ball bearing slides or it won't work worth a crap after you get a little weight in the drawers.

Here's my box here at work. Since this pic I've added a side box to it. It's a Proto brand box, they're very nice boxes, but they are pretty expensive. The one thing I really like about it is the one full width drawer on the top of the bottom box. It's good for holding my big wrenches, pry bars, etc. It's a 51" wide box.

That looks almost identical to my Proto box, except the drawer layout is just slightly different. It does have that one big drawer though. and I was wrong, my box is a 41" also. I'd say that one would be a good choice.

Edit: It doesn't make sense to me though that the stainless box is ~$200 cheaper than the same box in steel.

My dad has a kobalt stainless box and I really don't like how it is built. Look into the store brand boxes at northern tool. Ive seen some in person and they are very similar to the mac's and snap on

Wait till the big day after Thanksgiving sales are on.
I bought a craftsmen with ball baring drawers and grip latch.
Top and bottom last year for 500 plus tax.

The ones i've seen are the Torin brand. One of my customers up in VA has a huge shop where all the mechanics supply their own boxes. about half of them have Mac's or Snapons and the other half have these Torin boxes. They are really nice.

I also found this sight that has really good prices on large boxes. I looked at the Montezuma, and how stought it is built. For the size and strength its a bargain. That is if you call $3k a bargain.

I have a craftsman and I am very happy with it. If I was going to get another I would look at Sams Club and Harbor Freight. They both have some nice and cheap boxes that appear to be quality. With Harbor Freight you can always get a 20% off coupon too.

If your looking for a cheap box its hard to beat the quality of the big boxes at sams.
I bought one of the Harbor Freight 56 inch boxes, I had to replace the drawer slides 3 times within the first 6 months. The ball bearing would fall out of the slides, they warrantied them everytime but that doesnt say much for quality imo.
