I've been working on the trails some and will be having around 30 loads of large rocks delivered sometime in the next few weeks. I'd like to see who of the local guys would like to schedule a ride/work day sometime in October. Anyone who has any equipment that can be brought out would be awesome. I still have around 50 large tires that i want to set up as an obstical course and would like to do some widening and completion of some of the newer trails. Who would like to come help?
I'm also planning on a large weekend ride (Friday and Saturday) sometime in November with a cookout and such for Grace members.
Lets see who can make it for the ride/work day and post up what dates work for you so we can get something scheduled.

I think I'm free the first 3 weekends in November. If I could borrow a truck, theres a good chance you could get a Komatsu D21 Dozer down there...

how big of a dozer is that? What does it weigh? Will my 350 pull it ok?
jeepinmatt
09-19-2011, 09:45 PM
9000lb, you've seen it, its mine. I've pulled it with our 6.9NA diesel, so I'm sure your 350 will pull it great.

Ok. My trailer won't hold it, but I'm sure you have one that will. That would be great to have out there.
Does anyone have a back hoe or a track hoe that we can dig trenches to build the tire course?
jeepinmatt
09-19-2011, 11:48 PM
Yeah, our dual axle will hold it. Not sure exactly what it will be useful for, but it will push around rocks at least half as big as a jeep, and has no problem with traction on a hill or mud.

I talked to the road construction supervisor today and showed him where I wanted the rocks dumped. He said there would be between 30 and 40 tandem dump truck loads! I cleared a nice big area for them next to where the tire course will be set up.

The only weekend Im not available is Oct 15th. anything else ill come home. I could possibly get a Cat skid steer... not sure if that will be of much help or not. Ill look into getting a back hoe
jeepinmatt
09-21-2011, 09:03 PM
A skidsteer with 4in1 bucket will be much more useful for moving reasonable sized rocks. The dozer is good for pushing big stuff around and grading/reworking trail beds.
Hadfield4WD
09-22-2011, 07:01 AM
I used to own a skid loader and can operate one pretty good. If you want to rent one I'll come down if I'm available. The rental companies are hurting. So you could get a deal. Also a trackhoe with a fixed thumb would work good. Doesn't need to be all that big, just not a "mini" one. You would need the smallest big one they have.
I can call a buddy of mine who has a backhoe in Charlotte. I don't know if he still has it, he moved it from Jersey and it was old 15 years ago. Just set a date. I'll try.

I don't know which days I will be around. Decide when you want to do it and I will do my best to make it. I can also do pre-workday workdays...

Built the tire course today. Obviously there is still alot of shovel work to do filling in tires and packing the dirt around them nice and tight. I dumped alot of dirt on top of some while digging more holes so some of the tires are completely covered up right now. There are several very difficult lines and several easier lines. You can pretty much hit it from any angle you like.

To put it into perspective, the 3 or 4 largest tires in the pics are about 6 feet tall. about two thirds of them are sticking up above ground level.
I'm guessing these larger ones weigh somewhere around 1500 lbs. My tractor wouldn't pick them up and the 7500lb track hoe would only pick them up enough to drag them around.

from experience with ours... they get super slick when wet/muddy and create a good challenge...
also I recommend spraying them with something or filling them in... if they hold water, they breed mosquitoes
99NCXJ
10-22-2011, 09:42 PM
They will all be filled in.
There are a few lines through it that I don't think are possible without a big buggy.
Who wants to come out and help fill them in and take a shot at it?

I'll see what my work schedule looks like for the next week or two and try to schedule a work/play day. I talked to the guy bringing me all the rocks and he said it would be a few more weeks before the rest of them would be brought out. There are some nice ones already on the ground that I've already moved around that we can play on for now. I'm working on getting a dozer out there in the next couple of weeks to do some trail widening and try to finish cutting in the newest loop that RTaylor and a few others helped start a few months back. This new section will be fun. No big rocks, but some really deep ravines similar to the Lincolnton farm.

Jeepinmatt and i spent all day working on cutting in the new trail. Its amazing how much work you can get done with a bull dozer. Too bad it started leaking fluid from one of the hydraulic rams on the blade. We had to park it at the shop and pull the ram off so we can fix it. Hopefully we will get it finished up soon. Once we get this loop finished we need to have a few people come out and run the trail to help pack the soft spots down and make sure there arent any sink holes before the horses use it.
If any of the local guys want to come ride sometime in the next week or two let me know.

Worth noting that this picture was taken when I used the blade to lift the front of the dozer out of the mud. The tracks were pretty much below ground level, and the bottom was resting on the mud. Fortunately we were able to use a tree, chain, and hydraulics to pull it out under its own power.

I finished the new trail yesterday. There are a couple of uphill/off camber spots that are going to give some people a spooky ride. Today I had to go get the dozer out of the woods so instead of walking all the way out there, i figured the 4wheeler would be quicker. It had already been raining for several hours so the trails were nice and soupy. The first steep off camber section I got to stopped the 4wheeler in its tracks, then it slid down to the lowest spot. After about 20 min. of pulling and high reving antics, I finally got it out of the hole it was in. So...of course, instead of turning around and trying another way to get to where the dozer was, I tried it again and actually made it up the hill. Then, I came to the next hill which is not as steep but even more muddy, and well, you can see here how far I made it. Needless to say, I either need a 4x4 4wheeler or a winch...or both. Its still out in the woods. when it dries up I'll go get it.

Got the 4wheeler pulled out of the mud last week. Just waiting for the trails to dry up some before doing the last little bit of limb trimming.
Friday I got 8 more loads of rocks delivered. I am waiting to hear back from the construction foreman to see how much more to expect. I took some pics of the massive rocks but lost them when I had apple restore my firmware on my phone this morning. I'll snap some next time I'm out there, but put it this way... There are a lot of really big rocks on the ground. Its going to take some time getting them pushed around to make a nice rock garden. Might even need to borrow Jeepinmatt's dozer again for a day.
