View Full Version : Bumpus July 3rd

This was originally planned for the 2cd, but now moved to the 3rd.
Bumpus cove is near Erwin so it's close for most people. The main entrance was found to be on private property so the gate is closed. I have spoken with the ranger in charge of that trail several times and she tells me the trail is open and only that entrance was on private property. The rest of the trail is on forrestry land. The gravel road is open.
longer trip (all day) - gravel road to lunch spot (half way point on the trail) then go to beginning and turn around and go back up to lunch spot. Then go up the trenches to the top then turn left and back down the gravel road.
shorter trip (half day) - gravel road to the lunch spot then trenches to the top then turn left and back down the gravel road.
I would rather do the longer trip and take in the whole trail, but thought I'd put the options out there. I would like to get started about 9am so if anyone has problems we have plenty of time to get them home before dark.
In ideal conditions the whole trail can be run in 4 hours even if we go slow and stop for breaks. I just like to allow plenty of time in case someone has a problem and I would like to take an hour to play on the rocks and maybe watch Brian try the stairs. :)

Rats, Wish I could go, but have plans on the 2nd. I could go the 3rd or 4th, but if the 2nd is the day, I'll have to go some another time.

There is a place to park trailers at the cul-de-sac. Not sure if it will be messed with, but there is room.

3rd is Sunday so that would mean a late start and I'd rather not do that, but I do have a guy that wants to come from Alabama to get an axle on Saturday. Maybe the 3rd would be best.

3rd would work for me, but I'm cool with whatever you work out. I will probably be fixing my control arms on the 2nd. The control arm axle brackets I got off the guy @ C4C are the exact thing to fix my Jeep. God works in strange ways sometimes. I wouldn't have thought I would need brackets for a while, and then need them when I got home.

Ok, so 3rd it is. What time do you guys want to meet?
I could go to Grace church near the house at 9 and be ready by 10:30 or 11. My normal church lets out at 12:15 and it would be 1 by the time I got to the trail head.

11 sounds like a good time to meet up gives us about 9 hours of good light to do trail in case of any possible issues.

I'd say a lot will depend on how fast we move along and if we get started at 11.
I'd figure around 6
Gubni

I'd like to do the whole run. Like Brian said it will depend on weather than how the rigs are doing. If we do the whole day and you need to leave early we will be coming back to the lunch spot and it's mostly a gravel from from there down.

So are you going to be there?
Well I am not so sure. I haven't been to Bumpus in many many years and not as a driver. lol I am not even sure we are equipped enough to handle it.
How rough and extream is it now?
We have about 3 inch life and a rougher/mudder tire no lockers though So I am not even sure that if we could go, we could....

I have done it several times in my girlfriends TJ with only a 3" body lift and worn out 32's It was tough though and had to gas it up some spots.

Cindy,
Sure hope you guys can make it. It is so dry right now, that Bumpus will be as easy as is possible. Once we get to the lunch spot; anyone that is having problems could go back down the gravel road. We carry straps if someone is having problems and your rig sounds pretty capable.

I am hoping to be able to go on this ride with you guys. I havent seen a meetup spot listed on here yet. I just wanted to know a time and a place for everyone to hook up at. I know a lot of people just meet up at the cul-de-sac at the end of the paved road, but it is past the turn off for the gravel road and we will have to back track to it, I am not against this idea, I was just wondering. Just let me know when someone gets a chance. Thank you and God bless

Had a good trip. Was really suprised with the turnout!! Ended up losing my electric fan relay in rock garden then it got a little warm and blew a seam in radiator. We were able to hard wire fan and it ran cool rest of time. Then at the end of trenches I noticed that I had poped a cap on drivers side axle joint.
On a big positive note my wife drove her new toy (spencers YJ on 39.5's) and it was her first time driving it and she did a great job!!!!she made the trenches look easy!! And for anyone who hasn't been to bumpas in a while the trenches are DEEP...

WOW! Sounds like you all had a wonderful time with a great turn out.
At the last minute we decided to pull out. Think I have an axel going out and didn't wnat to chance it. Especially since I do drive my jeep pretty much on an every-other-day basis. I just didn't feel like getting into a situation with it. Need to have it replaced before winter.
Glad you had a beautiful day though.
Maybe next time.

I had a great time and got a couple of pictures that show how deep the trenches are right now. I'll get them posted later.
Add me to the carnage list. We noticed something dripping once we got back down to the road, and I just thought it was from running my air conditioner coming down. After I got home and started checking I had bent the trans crossbrace and it had hit the trans pan and it was leaking. I've been needing to change my trans fluid, so I guess I've got my excuse to do it.

Ok, let me see if I can get a full ride story.
I got there right about 11:00 so almost everyone else was already there. At the gravel road entrance was 4 jeeps with mild lift that I did not recognize. We went on to the end of the road and parked the trailers. There were several people there. We unloaded and proceeded up the gravel road to the shortcut up to the lunch spot with no troubles. Me, Brian (highroller), Don (JKcaveman), and a guy in a CUCV on 42's did the stairs. It was really dry and pretty easy. It was fun to watch Don's traction control kick in a work like lockers.
From there we headed most of the way to the bottom. Amanda had the front hubs unlocked so was in 2wd even though she had it in 4 low. We locked her hubs and she had a hard time steering with her front locker. We found the drag link was way too close to the knuckle. Other than hard to steer it wasn't a real problem. Pat's steering pump quit working somewhere along here too. There is a camping spot where a stream crosses at the bottom of the hill with all the basket ball size rocks. We turned around there. It was slow going back up that hill but no real problems. Slickrock seemed easy as it was very dry and nobody seemed to slow down much. We went over to the rock garden near the lunch spot where I tried to take the hard line. The pin that hold my steering ram to the tie rod came out and I took that as a sign and backed off of it. Brian was playing around some and overheated. We diagnosed it for a moment and found that the switch that powers the relay for his electric fan had lost power so jumped that leg of the relay to the battery. We also met up with a toyota who broke a driveshaft.
At this point several people went back to the lunch spot and took the gravel road. Me, Brian, Amanda, Pat, and Don continued up the steep hill climb there across from the rock garden and up the trenches. I found out one of the mud holes was over 3 foot deep and warned the others. I thought Don should take the bypass. I went up the trenches by putting a tire in the trench and just crawling. I was super impressed with the CJ as she did perfect through the worst spots. Pat followed me and "squished" the passenger side more. His passengers nickname was squish. Then he got at too much angle at one post and the carb quit so I strapped him a few foot to get level. He had lost some air from one tire and a short ways later went flat. The odd thing is the same thing happended to me in that spot several years ago before I had beadlocks. We jacked it up and used CO2 to reinflate it with no problems. Brian lost a cap to one of his axle joints along here. I suspect it was C clip and not full circle. We did find out the joints are chromoly and possibly the shafts too. Maybe a joint rebuild kit and new inner shaft for him.
We continued on to the top. I went through the big mud hole on the left at the top. It was almost over my 44's. I expected to idol through, but had to give it about half throttle and inch my way. That really surprised me. After I get out Pat hollars for me to stop in a panic voice. I hit the brakes and nothing happens. I pumped it a few times and still nothing, so I hit the kill switch and left it in gear which stopped it. I got out and noticed a 6' log 4" diameter pinned on the drivers rear axle with another one 10' long and 5" diameter. I assume a whole tree had fell in or someone threw it in and maybe that's why I had to throttle through. I used vise grips to pinch the line. I think maybe someone else had an issue here, but they had it fixed by the time I got my brakes working.
From there it was pretty easy going back down. I did get to see a large turkey. About half way down Amanda had a tire try to fall off. Once again odd because I had the same problem about the same spot a few years ago. Brian checked the others to find they were all loose. We had no more problems and was a great day with good weather.
sounds like you guys had alot of fun.

I knew it was solid, but figured it was a yota front. So I'm guessing it's a chevy 10 bolt? Why did you choose that over a yota front?

well to add to the list of things, I had a blast on the trail and couldnt have asked for a better day even with the problems i had. Unfortunately the SMURF has seen its last trail ride. Body completely collapsed onto the frame on drivers side, drivers seat broke through body on 2 bolt mount holes, steering blew and because of body twisting on frame fan is now hitting.
This is what I call time for CHANGE !!!
And I will not tell or show whats going to happen till I know whats gonna happen lol
