My dad gave my oldest (TJ) his jeep, you believe that??? He wouldnt give me mine (78 Dodge Omni and 64 Comet) till I had my diploma in my hand, and TJ is just a Junior. But that's alright. The first thing the youngon mentioned was taking it on a trail, but until his name is the "only" name on the title, as tempting as it will be, I dont want it on a trail. I drove it from Bloomfeild Ky today, and I couldnt believe how good it rode and drove. I'd rather him just take care of it, it's all original (other than the carborator and half done clear coat job) 128,000 miles. Just wanted to share, that's why I didnt put it in projects, if mom has anything to say it wont be a "project."

Nice ride TJ. Take care of it, and it will last you a long time.

I really like FSJs. That one looks great. It sounds like it won't need anything, but post up if you do. I will do what I can to help.

Awesome. My dad had one almost identical to that. His had an integral radio/cb. 2 door. I wish he kept it. They are a great budget wheeler. I personally wouldn't keep him from wheeling it, I'd build it with him and teach responsible driving and trail riding. but that's me. My wife also wants her own wheeler as well.

I want him to experience trail riding, just not in that jeep, any other jeep fine, just not that one. I guess cause it was my dad's, and I know he's not going to be around forever. Just kinda sentimental like that I guess. There's only 2 dents on it and only one of them is really noticeable, other than bubbling under the paint in a couple of places. I just think it's too nice to get out there and scratch up and it end up like red. Maybe when I get a break in school I'll have time to get more done on red and he can practice with it, he cant really hurt it much.
I do have a question though, is there a cheap but effective way to deal with the clear coat?? It is just flaking off, not the paint just the clear coat? It does need a couple of adjustments mechanically, but I dont think anything serious. The t-case rattles bad (that's what dad said the noise was). I haven't gotten a chance to get under it or anything yet. And I cant get the back window down all the way to open the tailgate. I may be wrong, but doesnt the window have to be all the way down to open it? Sorry for any questions that sound silly, but I figure if anyone knew anything about J.E.E.P.s, it would be anyone here. Oh it is an '83.
Tj is taking auto body next year so this would make a good project for his class too. I'll probably give in to some mods, just rather not have anything extreme done to it. But it is his. , I know once he's old enough to have the title in his name, I probably wont recognize the jeep. He's out there washing it now, I may not have to worry about clear coat or paint for that matter, :-k (he's never washed one of my vehicles) :-k LOL

If the Cherokee is full time 4wd, it has a NP219 transfer case. If it's part-time 4wd (selector has a position for 2wd HI), it either has a NP228 or NP229. Those aren't hard to find (call Thumpz or check ifsja.org) and usually are fairly cheap. It may just be a stretched chain in the transfer case (common problem), which isn't hard to replace and usually costs about $100 for a new one.

Yes, the glass has to be rolled all the way down to open the tailgate. Otherwise the glass will probably break, as it will be caught in the weatherstrip of the upper part of the body. There are several possible causes for the glass not rolling all the way down. In the case of my Cherokee, the glass had come loose from the lifter channel and had wedged between the channel & lifter mechanism. I have since ordered new replacements for every bit of tailgate weatherstripping, and a new lifter channel because mine was all bent up, badly rusted, and looked like it had been welded back together several times already. The only way to tell what your problem is would be to take off the large inspection cover on the inside of the tailgate and look inside for any problems. Wouldn't hurt to have someone who knows FSJ tailgates to look at it too. ;)

As for the paint, early 80's clearcoats left alot to be desired. If it were me, I'd try to have the exterior re-painted (for example, by TJ's auto body class, or a vocational school auto body class - all you have to buy is the paint, the labor is usually free). For now I'd use polishing compound & a thick coat of good wax.

Adding to what Bluegill said, check the transfer case fluid. A NP219 takes 30wt motor oil. A 228 or 229 take Dextron tranny fluid. While you are there, you can stick a screwdriver in the case through the fill hole and flex the chain. If you get more than an inch deflection you should replace the chain. I have not done this, but it appears fairly straightforward and replacement chains are available fom BJs Offroad and others.

I also recommend you get familiar with IFSJA.org. They know everything you will ever want to know about FSJs. There also is a guy on there that goes by Tanker that has an FSJ salvage yard in Burnsville NC . The last time I was there he had over 20 FSJs. If you can't find something you need here, he will probably have it.

Thanks guys. That helps alot. I guess I need to start giving him a little more credit for having a brain, he might still be a kid, but he's not a baby anymore. He got the window down and out (and it's still in one piece). He got it down but it wouldnt go back up, he had it took apart before I even knew he was doing anything to it. (probably one of those "I better fix this before she sees it" things.) But I dont have the "star bit" to fit he screws. The handle on the outside moves but it doesnt move anything with it. I told him it's fine, that we need to get new rubber seals and fix it while it's out anyway. So he cleaned it out inside at the bottom of the tailgate, it had all kinds of stuff down there. Thanks again for the info.
