I have a 1980 ford 1900 3 cyl diesel tractor, last summer it was overheating very easily especially in the upper rpm range (2000-2400rpm) I parked it over the winter and replaced the water pump, radiator cap, bled the fuel system changed the oil & filter & adjusted the valves.
it seemed to have helped, it did ok while it was still cold out. but now that I am bush hogging & it is warmer outside again it is still overheating, but not as easily as it did. & now I have noticed little drops of oil wherever I go & I have traced it back to the blowby tube that comes from the valve cover.
I am not that familliar with trouble shooting a diesel, so if there are any diesel guys out there, I would appreciate the help.

I am thinking that it may have low compression, but I dont have a compression checker & I am not sure where to take the reading at? at the injector?
I am also thinking that it may have a weak injector pump or a restricted injector that is making a cylinder run lean. I am not comfortale taking apart the injector pump or the injectors because I dont know what to look for.

I would start with a bottle of prolong engine treatment.

Thanks Shawn I will try that, I just put some restore in it, we'll see

Wrong choice with the "magical engine fixxers" don't waist Ur $.

Does it loose coolant when not overheating? Or take the rad cap off and see if there are bubbles in the coolant. Blown head gasket?

From the sounds of it it isn't running lean. U would have melted a piston by now.

Blowby is normally measured with an orifice and a monometer.

Checking the compression is Ur best bet. That is done using an adapter that goes in the inj hole. I would talk to a local shop they might have one. Find out if the engine has cyl sleeves wet vrs dry. this will give us a better idea if it is worth rebuilding or not.

I'm leaning toward blowby. Might b able to re-ring it and get lucky or might need to bore and go over sized.

If going to check the compression while u have the inj out have them pop tested.

I dont think it is losing coolant when its not overheating, I will keep an eye on that. also I will look for bubbles in the coolant & get back to ya later. thank for the help.
