As a "new" Christian I wonder about things pertaining to Church affairs.
When the tragedy that happened last Monday (Va. Tech)I wanted to hear a sermon about it. But even though I asked the youth pastor and the men's leader no one had comments other than shaking their heads.
Am I wrong to think that there are others that want to apply Christ's teaching to the world we live in today ?
I wonder if the Church leaders want to avoid these issues because it could cause division among the members and some might leave. But if we are in search of the truth why would this be bad ?

Pastors should bring the message the Lord gives them, my pastor commented on it but basically it's just simple demon possession.

X2 I go to a church where the pastor does not listen to public opinion about what he is to preach about (sometimes we don't even have a sermon). Phil follows the will of The Holy Spirit. That is the reason the I go there. He says what God places on his heart even if it is not popular and makes people upset. I Love Phil, and what he stands for.

Our sermons don't aim at current events per se, as in the way you posed the question. We may (and did with respect to VT) include a mention of such things in the Pastoral Prayer. Not as political commentary, but praying for those affected.

Yes, we MUST apply Christ's teaching to the world we live in today. Part of that is being able to discuss what is going on and how to work through it and learn from it. Perhaps it would be a great topic for a small group meeting. Since I was in Children's Church, I don't know whether the VT murders were part of the sermon at my church or not. I am glad to say that the message at my church is directed by the Holy Spirit.

You know that was kinda what I was talking about. Couldn't we ie. the Church just meet in one of the meeting rooms and talk about that sort of thing. I would need someone with more Bible grounding than me to be there. Do you guys think I'd be out of line suggesting this ?

Learn the word (Bible) and you will understand current events and how to deal with them.
