I have officialy joined the McMinn County Rescue Sqaud. I was voted in on Thursday Night, filled out my paperwork and Drug Tested Friday. Yesterday and Today I am in class. I was wanting to know is there anyone else serving, or retired from the Fire Department, or Rescue Squad?

I was an active paramedic for a time . I am still current in my national registryl icence but am no longer working. In the military I occasionally performed medical duties along with my regular duties when we were shorthanded on combat missions . I also tought combat medic courses.

I believe both Jeff (Outback) and JR (Hano) are both paramedics.

When I lived in NW rural NJ I was on a volunteer first aid squad from about 1970 to 1980. We were initially red cross certified, then I became an EMT. We were in such a rural area, members relied on CB radios, and the rescue rigs had them also, as well as police radios. Just before I left the squad, we got the Jaws, plus we ran Cadillac rigs. Rescue equipment & methods have made huge progress since then. Let all my training lapse when I moved to Florida in 1981.
Because it was such a small town, we knew most of our patients. I remember to this day the first traffic accident fatality I responded to. It was a guy I went to school with.

Today I finished my car evac class, and my EVOC class. Emergency Vehicle Operation Class. The Evac class was extremely cool, I lwas taught the proper way to cut a car, from underneath, the roof, and pop a door. Including several others. Now I havent had all of the car evac class, becasue there are 18wheelers, and electric cars.
Now for the EVOC class.I now know how to operate a Emergency vehicle the proper way. They teach you a lot. I think I learnt more here than any other driving class, most of the class was about vehicle recovery. How to use the winch, and four wheel drive etc... Anyways while driving today we got a call to a burning vehicle. And to protect the young ones on here and the faint, once you see and smell what I did today, you will never forget that. i assure you I wont.
I am glad that I now am experiencing the real life situtations of rescues. Not the movie types. I am probaly going to be more cautious when driving, becasue life can unexpectidly come to an end.

Training has gotten much more thorough, it sounds. We only had a Defensive Driving class. And, you are certainly correct in that real life, experience makes you more aware of your abilities & limitations. Movie glamour makes one much bolder than reality dictates. And, you are correct about certain things you never forget.
