im thinking about selling the scout. its a great truck but it isnt exactly what i thought i wanted. there arent enough places to take it. and i dont want to drive it far enough to get to places. however if i cant get enough for it im gonna keep it. i think i can sell it for enough to get an s10 with a blown up motor and swap in a v8 and still have a little money left over. i just dont know. im already tired of finding parts for this truck. wheel bearing nut loosened up and by the time i realized what it was it took out the hub on that side. $200 later i got it running. i think im ready to get back into a vehicle that is still in junkyards.

The Scout is twice the vehicle that an S10 is and you can get all the drivetrain parts at about any parts store. One thing is for sure if your serious about getting into offroading it's going to be hard on the wallet no matter what rig you go with

If you sased one and dropped a v8 in it like you speak of you would have a pretty sick rig. Also S10 parts can be had at any parts store you go too. They are not very expensive rigs to maintain. I mean heck get one with the votrec 4.3 and wheel it like that. those are pretty good motors.

Most Scouts come with D44 axles and are generally easier to modify.

I loved my Scout - but I feel ya on the parts $$$. I'd recommend swapping the IHC motor for one that has more readily available (and cheaper) parts. If you have the 727 tranny, a 318 Dodge & matching 727 could be found pretty cheap. Or a small block Chevy or Ford (which requires an adapter bellhousing or tranny swap). Your Scout should have a Dana 20 t-case, which is pretty stout and can also be setup for twin-stick shifters. If you keep the 727 tranny configuration, upgrading to a Dana 300 t-case would be an easy swap. All S10's have an NP231C t-case, which is pretty strong, but I'd rather have a Dana t-case myself.
In my younger & wilder days ( ) I used to run my '78 Scout on lake bottoms against a friend's '84 S10. He beat that "dime" REALLY hard, but it never broke! Well, except for one jump that he misjudged - the bed broke loose from the frame  We strapped it down, got it to his house, and welded it back on  He was wheeling it again the next weekend.
A Scout is a classic vehicle that was designed to be tough (with exception to body rust  ). Parts for most classics aren't that cheap. S10's are great trucks, but not classics. My DD is a '95 2wd, and I love it. Consider this - bone stock, a V8 Scout's rear axle (D44) is stronger than an S10's (7.625" 10bolt). If you built an S10, you'd need a beefier rear axle in addition to a solid front axle. I've witnessed stock D44's hold up to being brutally punished running 37" tires

What are you looking to sell it for?

i wouldnt really be selling it to get a 4x4 s10. im thinking more about getting back into ,and using it for dragracing. i used to run a 79 malibu, and it was slow but i did most of the work on it myself. also if my other car breaks i cant really use this as a daily driver. GAS IS HIGH. this thing just doesnt get the mpg that would let me use it as one. if i ever really wanted to build an s10 i probably would drop it on a fullsize truck frame and go from there. this thing suprisingly doesnt have that much rust. it does have the rust in front of the rear tires, the wheelwells have some in them too, right where the top meets the body right by the rear hatch, and a little bit of surface rust underneath. other than that the truck is really clean.
salb3039 i would like to get $2300.

My dad had a scout traveler when I was growing up. He put a torsen type ls in the diff and it was incedible where we could go. It had the 345 v8, lots of torque. Does yours have the hubs that engage in forward without being locked? I always thought that was cool, shift into 4x4 and go as long as you were going forward cetrifugal force would lock the hubs. Saved me from getting in the mud a few times. Great looking rig, you know Uwharrie is only about 2 hours away from rock hill. I'm in Waxhaw and drive up there quite a bit.
