Hey! I thought its about time that I do one of these. Well its a 1996 Land Rover Discovery Se7. It has 99,xxx miles on it. It has Old man emu 2.5" lift with 32 inch Bfgoodrich Wrangler M/t. It has a detriot tru track in the rear with HD axles. It has a ARB bullbar with a Warn M8000 and 2 hella 550's. It has a wilderness roof rack with 4 hella rallye 4000 metal lights on it. I am sure I am forgeting some stuff... And I am not really sure what I am gonna do to her next. I really would like to get a 5" rovertym lift and like 34's! well here is a few pics!!

Yeah, I sure did!!! Not really sure what it was... I replaced the plug wires, and cleaned of the throttle position sensor.. and then filled it up with gas and put a fuel cleaner thing in it!! Now its driving PERFECT!!! I am not really sure what it was... my alternator test was good at advance!!

i havent been in years and nothing anywhere near hear. I learned in the Indian ocean off the east coast of Africa, then was blessed to enjoy a week in the great barrier reef of australia, and then hawaii on my way back home.

welp... I took her out again today... I decided to go back to Hurricane Gap! She did great!! except for like halfway through it start making a noise like metal scraping noise, maybe like dragging a chain on something metal noise..... It was coming from around the rear passenger tire!! It might be like a rock in the rotor or something... I hope it has nothing seriously wrong!! And then on the way home, it just died... The thermometer said it wasn't running hot, but it definitely was!! The antifreeze was boiling.... Then I let it set and it drove the rest of the way home just fine... Does overheating cause a car to die??? well here are a couple of pics.... and a video

Looks like ya had fun. That's a great place to wheel.

Yup, Vince - looks easy with no mud, doesn't it?

Yes, overheating can cause a shutdown, and can be serious. The TEMP gauge should have registered an overheating issue. I would check it out thoroughly.

Many things can cause overheating. Not enough air flow, especially while wheeling, but since you've wheeled it before, just a guess.

Thermostat hung up, fan not pulling enough air, running the A/C while driving slowly, loss of coolant, etc.

When an engine gets hot enough to boil the coolant, and shutdown, you can damage the engine. Blown head gaskets, cracks, and on & on.

Not trying to alarm you, but it is extremely unwise to overheat to the point of shutdown.

I am really unfamiliar with these "pride's of Britain", but aren't the engines aluminum?

Derrick, any suggestions on what to look for besides the obvious mentions?

well the temp gauge wasnt at the bottom or anything... It was like a little more than halfway.... and I have no Idea if the engine is Aluminum or not!! :(

what is bad about an aluminum motor??

pplblazerdude

The aluminum can warp a heck of alot easier then cast. Yours should be all aluminum if I am not mistaken.

Well.... I just took it for a little spin before the storm hits. And it drove perfectly fine!!! I hope it stays like that!!!

yes your engine is about 98% aluminum. This engine is an amazing engine dispite what anyone says to you. it was in production for 40 years. if it is WELL mantained it will last a very very long time.

all aluminum block engines have a similar problem though. inside the cylinders there is a steel sleeve that the piston sets inside of. if you were to over heat your engine that steel sleeve and the aluminum block will expand in different ways. potenially that sleeve will slid into the crank, and BAD things happen. rover engines 99-2002 were for some reason bad for this, but it happened usually within 30,000-50,000 miles, and were covered by the warrenty.

a easy way to prevent that....BAD overheat your engine

you have a ton of stuff on your bumper blocking your radiator.....GET RID OF IT!....or.....

cut your plactic grill out and replace it will expanded metal to improve flow. another thing you can do is....i see you like mud, so most likely your radiator has alot gummed up in it....radiators dont like mud. on a disco the radiator and oil cooler are sandwiched together behind the grill. mud likes to collect there between those two coolers. so what you can do is unbolt the top two bolts of the main radiator, and then push it back and that will open up that area between the two coolers. then just pressure wash all that junk out of there.

some ways to keep a rover from over heating are: minimize the airflow restricters in front of the grill. you see lots of rovers with stuff blocking their radiators and they cry and don't understand why they have over heating problems. another as i said is to flush the mud away from the radiator. then....when you're off-road if your in low or low-lock it will keep your engine from straining as much and that results in a cooler engine.

just remember...OVER HEATING is a rovers worst enemy

Nice pics man, hope you get the cooling problems settled. BTW, the trail you were on is #422 at Paint Creek

And it looks like both big mudholes (the consecutive ones) are empty :(
